Review: Sons of Anarchy - Fa Guan

(S02E09) - "I know the greater devil when I see it." - Deputy Chief Hale to Clay

The great thing about a show like Sons of Anarchy is you never exactly know when you're watching its true boiling point. You might think the situation you're watching is the apex of the conflict, particularly the beef between Clay and Jax, but it always finds an interesting and surprising way of making it worse and makes you forget that it still has more episodes to go.

That's the true sign of a good series. It sucks you in and erases any and all concept of time. Unlike other TV shows that you can just have in the background to break the silence of your lonely place, SOA demands your attention and gets it every time, at least for this season. You can't just leave it on and not not watch it (screw good grammar, if you can think of a better and more entertaining way to say it, be my guest). Anything that can stop and slow time, whether it's a TV show, a flying DeLorean or a hot tub deserves special merit in my book.

Review: Smallville - Kandor

(S09E07) If Smallville continues to produce episodes of good quality like tonight's, I may have to take back some of the things I've been saying about it. Seriously.

Tonight we got a lot of backstory and explanation about some of the stranger aspects of the Smallville universe. Why is Earth such a magnet for Kryptonians, dead or otherwise? Because Krypton has been observing Earth for a long, long time and designated the planet as a bolt-hole. We also learned more about that Kryptonian artifact that has been a mystery in Smallville for a few seasons now.

All this and no Lois, too.

The night our warm-up guy turned on the audience

Tuesday was election day (I learned on Wednesday). I am reminded of the election episode my partner, David and I wrote for the TONY RANDALL SHOW.

I’ll pause for a moment while you say “what the hell was the TONY RANDALL SHOW?" It was an MTM series in the late 70’s starring the late Tony Randall as a judge in Philadelphia. It’ll probably never be shown again but it was a damn funny show. Below is the opening and closing title sequences. (It's amazing we had any time to actually do the show, the opening titles were so friggin' long.)

In this particular episode, Tony’s character runs for Superior Court Judge, his opponent dies during the election but too late for his name to be removed from the ballot. Lo and behold, he wins. Tony was beaten by a dead man. The show played great all week with hardly any changes. We were expecting great things.

And then on show night, in front of the audience – death, nothing, tumbleweeds, crickets.

Needless to say, we were stymied.

One of the executive producers was doing the warm-up, and was so mad he turned on the audience. (It didn’t help that the entire staff was drinking frozen margaritas in the prop room between scenes).

He started saying things like, “Hey, I think your hearse is waiting”, “Hey, wasn’t that moderately amusing?”, and the tag was Tony entering his office which was now completely empty (his furniture moved in anticipation of the certain victory) to which the warm-up man shouted at the audience, “Get it?! What’s different about that room? Anybody?”

It was only after the crowd filed out that we learned the truth. The entire audience was Hispanic, bussed in, and spoke no English.

Remember all the bad things I said about the laugh track? We sure used it that week.

'Bruno' deleted scenes featuring La Toya Jackson

The "Bruno" DVD is being released Nov. 17 but the La Toya Jackson deleted scenes are available right here.In this scene, cut from the movie out of respect for Michael Jackson and his family, Sacha Baren Cohen's Bruno interviews La Toya Jackson while they eat sushi off a fat, naked man. La Toya doesn't seem to be in on the joke. She tries to actually field the questions, even when Cohen asks her to pretend to be Michael or tries to find MJ's number on La Toya's cell phone. The scene is uncomfortable. Really the only funny part of the deleted scene is the very beginning, where Bruno tries first to get Paula Abdul to eat the sushi off the naked man and she leaves.We don't really see what including this on the DVD adds. Comedy Central wants a bite of The Onion

Part of me is surprised that this deal took this long to happen. But when you watch the recent crop of new shows on the Chortle Network (with the exception of Tosh.0), it really shouldn't surprise anyone.

Comedy Central has ordered a half-hour scripted pilot based on the Onion's Sports Network. The OSN is part of the popular satirical magazine's online TV news network that launched a little under a year ago.

This isn't the first time the network has tried to do a satirical sports show. Comedy Central also shot a pilot for a Daily Show-esque sports show called Sports Central that died in the pilot stage. This incarnation sounds much more promising since it will spoof not only sports figures and stories, but also the tone and style of sports media. Sweet sassy molassey, this is gonna rock!

Scripps gobbles up the Travel Channel

While NBC juggles its possible new owner, another TV takeover went down this week in the epicenter of its shadow.

Scripps Networks won the right to buy the "controlling stake" in The Travel Channel from Cox Communications and it only cost them $181 million to earn a 65 percent stake in the cable network. Only $181 million? Did Cox put The Travel Channel up for sale at a flea market?

Why did they jump at a deal for a network with such a small audience? Slate's Troy Patterson says that even though the audience is small, it's a "niche market" that "advertisers can't resist pandering to."

Thursday Ratings: Fringe Hangs by a Thread

Just because FOX benefitted from the World Series doesn’t mean its programs did. Last night’s return of Fringe hit a series low in the demos. Meanwhile, the other networks resumed their old ways. ABC placed first yesterday with the 18-49s while CBS was on top with the viewers.

Survivor: Samoa (12.7 million, 3.7/10 in 18-49) was up slightly.
FlashForward (8.5 million, 2.6/7) was off by 500,000.
Approximately 8.5 million welcomed back Bones (2.5/7).
Community (5.6 million, 2.3/6) picked up 100,000; Parks and Recreation (4.9 million, 2.2/6) slid by 100,000.
The Vampire Diaries (4.2 million, 2.0/5) did about the same.

Before Mad Men's third season, fans wondered when, as in what year, series creator Matthew Weiner would resume the story.

There was reason for the anticipation: In the Season2 finale, Betty (January Jones) revealed to reformed womanizer Don (Jon Hamm) that she was pregnant, and viewers were curious how that would play out. But more significantly, everyone wondered whether or not Weiner would skip over the Nov. 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Project Runway: Caring Is Creepy

Hey guys. Hello fashionistas, how's it hangin' fashionistos. Well, that's that, almost. We've just one sweepy, swooshy, swishy episode left of this florid little heap of a reality show before they pack up the boxes and leave LA to the dogs. Oh thank ye gods. This has been such a lame-duck season, so turdy and uneventful. I'm pretty sure we're all just whiling away the hours until it's gone and we can have some sliver of our Thursday nights back. And what about you, Lifetime? Was it good for you? I doubt that it was. Anyway, because I'm sort of disillusioned with this season, and I've already recapped two other shows today, Ima just keep this real short.
I mean really short, like a Logan Neitzl (where are you beautiful boy??) dress. What happened in the episode was this:
Heidi Klum got day-drunk one afternoon and was doing some drunken bicycle riding around Los Angeles, which is her second favorite thing to do (the first is making seal pups). On this particular drunken bicycle riding day, she pedaled aimlessly up a long, twisting hill road and finally stopped in a big complex of white buildings and grasses and fountains. Heidi, drunk as Oktoberfest, cooed "Ohhh looking Heidi! You are inning the space station! Zer gut!" Then she fell over and passed out in the soft, cool, green green grass and when she woke up the next day she was back at home and Tim was sitting on the edge of her bed, stirring a cup of tea and putting a washcloth on her forehead. "Guten tag my little sour biscuit," Tim murmured. "Timberly," Heidi croaked, "Ver vas I?" "Why Heidi! You were at the Getty Museum. Up on the hill." "Ze Getty Museum," Heidi whispered. "I zot it was only a legend!" "Oh you and your legends," Tim chuckled. "Now here, drink this tea. It's made from Karl Lagerfeld's skin flakes."
So Heidi was so enchanted by ze Getty Museum that for ze final challenge, she had ze designuhz make outfits inspired by ze paintings and zkulptcha and groundz. (If you haven't been and live in LA, shame on you. It's really, really lovely.) The challenge was introduced by the mayor of Los Angeles, a dapper-but-smarmy lookin' fella, and then the kids were off and running. Or, not running, because fashion designers can't and don't run, but you know what I mean. They were off and sketching.
I pretty much don't like anyone who's left and haven't liked anyone in the competition with the possible exception of Rae'Mon, so I wasn't really surprised that everything was boring. Basically you need to know this: Irina was mean, Althea was kinda dumb, Daryl Hannah just seemed sort of blandly nice, Gordon complained about home and away, and Chrissy Minnesota meeped and mewed and said hickory things and we all just put our heads in our hands and mumbled, over and over again: "Done, done, done, done..." The whole episode was cobbled together to make it look like everyone hates each other when in truth I'm sure they were just as bored with each other as we are. I'm sure they just spent a lot of time surrounded by clocks ticking, the muted sound of faraway car horns suggesting a world twirling outside, a world where people were going places, where things were happening and getting done. But for the time being they were all just stuck in that studio, left to linger and long for some better, brighter, bigger day.
The fashions were:
— Althea made a gold dress made of gold that was inspired by golden things that she found at the Heidi Klum Memorial (drunken bicycle riding always gets you in the end) Grassy Space Station. It was pretty, I guess. In the way that Althea is pretty, I guess. And makes pretty clothes, I guess. I guess. I guess and guess forever.
— Daryl Hannah apparently found the same gold mine at the Klum Grassy Space Station as Althea did, so she just made a longer version of the same dress. It was really long and really golden and yeah I guess you could see someone wearing it to the Oscars, as long as they were comfortable looking like an actual Oscar.
— Chrissy made something weird where you couldn't tell what was the top and what was the bottom. It had a nice middle section that was tied on with string, but the long cylindrical skirt looked awkward and I couldn't figure out when you would wear such a garment. It was a casual evening gown. For all those casual black tie soirees? Feh.
— Gordon, who was the closest thing I had to a favorite, made a flowy fright wig of a gown that I thought was quite pretty, if a bit derivative of, once again because everyone copies this dress, Austin Scarlet's season one red carpet numbah. Apparently it was poorly tailored in the back, which is rare for old Gordon. Sigh.
— Finally Irina made a big flowing green blob of a thing and I really think that Irina's kind of a big flowing blob of a one trick pony. I hate her.
So that was that. Can you guess who went through? Can you guess who went home? Of course you can, it's quite easy. Gordon's an old lady so they sent her packing back to South Carolina, where she can be proud that she made it to the final five but sad that she couldn't compete against people nobody cares about. Sigh. And, yes obviously, it was time for ugly old Chrissy Minnesota to get stuffed back in his duffel bag and shipped to the frozen North Country, where he now spends his days kicking the tires of his near-dead Mercury Topaz and smoking thin cigarettes and staring at the mottled sky and considering life, just the word of it, life, and then he'll get tired or cranky or cold or all three and he'll shuffle back into the house and listen to the stove clock ticking and hear the cars out on Route 12 and he'll think of being stuck in that fashion room in Los Angeles, the way the sun splashed in in tidal waves and he'll miss it with a pain like a needle. When he wakes up in the morning he always smells something burning. The leaves on the tree out front never grew back.
Aha. The end. Althea, Daryl Hannah, and She Who Shall Not Be Named. They're going to the big dance. Do you care? Does anyone in this filthy blue marble really care? They probably don't even care anymore, because this whole thing happened over a year ago. It's long dead, long gone. Fashion is all about the now, and this season of Project Runway is all about the yesterday. Maybe that's the flaw, that's the uncovered heel. We're in a time machine.
Don't step on anything.

North By Northwest 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray

When it comes to classic movies, there aren't many around with a shot at topping North by Northwest. The treasure of cinema fans and frequent bane of film students is now available in a wonderful Blu-Ray treatment, fully remastered, and with great bonuses.

Cary Grant (as the ultimate man-on-the-run in his fourth Hitchcock teaming) gives a superlative performance while Eva Marie Saint (perfect Hitchcock heroine Eve Kendall) is at her sultry and sexy best in this heart-pounding thriller. Grant plays Manhattan adman Roger Thornhill, who is at once plunged into the world of spies and counterspies, abducted, framed for murder, chased, and (in the signature set-piece) crop-dusted. At the films’ end, he hangs on for dear life from the facial features of Mount Rushmore’s Presidents where he ultimately rescues Miss Saint.

Cable News Ratings During Ft. Hood Breaking News

When the news broke around 3:15pmET yesterday of the massacre at Ft. Hood, the 24-hour news networks went in to high gear. A day later, we have the ratings which show where TV viewers went for information.

Between 3pmET and 7pmET, Fox News averaged 2.60M Total Viewers and 627K in A25-54 viewers coming in first of the three cable news networks, and adding viewers with each subsequent hour. CNN averaged 1.33M Total Viewers and 371K in the demo, seeing some drop-off at 6pmET. MSNBC averaged 624K Total Viewers and 196K in the demo, like FOX adding viewers with each hour.

> More: The Fox News dominance of the story was even more profound in primetime, as the network averaged 3.24M Total Viewers between 8pmET and MidnightET, with Bill O'Reilly drawing 4.995 million Total Viewers at 8pmET (by comparison NBC's "Parks & Recreation" at 8:30 averaged 4.935M).

Fox News beat the combined Total Viewer averages of CNN (1.835M) and MSNBC (955K) from 8pmET-Midnight.

Supernatural Skillfully Skewers the Competition

Supernatural is the best show on television that nobody watches—and a after a string of merely "good" episodes (by Supernatural standards, and that's a compliment), the show offered up another epic tale last night. The daring drama has never been afraid to slyly refer its own place in pop culture, but "Changing Channels" went a step further by taking aim at the show's competish.
Grey's Anatomy and CSI, which both air opposite Supernatural in the ultra-competitive 9pm Thursday time slot, were both lampooned by The Winchesters with brilliant results. For those who didn't get to watch last night, here's the premise of the episode: Sam and Dean were thrown into a television world where they were the stars of various TV shows—shows that were eerily similar to the shows on TV today.
The faux show Dr. Sexy, MD was set at Seattle Mercy Hospital and featured hot doctors who couldn't keep their hands off each other, a ghost that only existed in the mind of one of the doctors (nod and a wink to Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who's appeared on both Grey's and Supernatural), Lilith Fair chick music, and tacky dialogue ("You're a brilliant coward!"). In a CSI: Miami send-up, the brothers Winchester repeatedly took off and re-donned their sunglasses and uttered zingers that even David Caruso would envy ("Well I say... jackpot").
But the highlight of the episode had to be the fake opening credits (video below), in which Sam and Dean ride tandem bikes and engage in other Bosom Buddies-ish activities, all to the tune of a kick-ass, classic sitcom theme song.
In the end, we learned a big secret about The Trickster and thickened the plot on some future brother-on-brother brawlin'—and the way the whole thing unfolded seemed natural. Some might even say Super natural (*groan*). In less capable hands, the storyline would have been a mess.
Am I wrong in saying that Supernatural is one of the most daring and entertaining shows on television? What other show could pull off this type of tomfoolery? Supernatural isn't just one of television's best serialized dramas, it has somehow also become one of TV's best comedies (though I would never call it a comedy), and that's a unique blend from which other shows could stand to learn a thing or two.

Vinnie Politan Returns to TV as Host of "In Session"

With next Friday marking the final day of production of truTV's "In Session" programming from New York, the network has announced new anchors who will debut from CNN headquarters in Atlanta the following Monday. Among the new hosts is a familiar name: Vinnie Politan. A long-time CourtTV and truTV host, Politan left the network in March, 2008.

The other "In Session" host is Ryan Smith who has appeared as a legal commentator on many networks. He specializes in entertainment law and hosted a show on BET called "My Two Cents."

The new "In Session" will feature reports from Beth Karas, who has been with the network since 1994.

In Session has also named three contributors: Mike Brooks, who will be the network's law enforcement analyst, Midwin Charles and Sunny Hostin.

truTV remains based in New York but the daytime production "In Session," which airs from 9amET-3pmET is shifting from studios in New York to studios in Atlanta. The production team in Atlanta is part of HLN.

The Office: What's up with Pam?

Has anyone else noticed that Pam's (Jenna Fischer) been pissy ever since The Office wedding? Sure, she's got a lot to deal with. She's six months pregnant. She's a salesperson now. Her husband was just promoted to co-regional manager. Her mom is dating the other co-regional manager, who happens to be Michael Scott (Steve Carell). And Michael just dumped her mom. But did Pam really have to punch him? It was totally out of character—and a little too cheap for The Office.
And what about her having the "lowest sales performance" and the "worst attitude" in the office? Her sour face has been dragging on for a few weeks now, and frankly, it's a huge downer. I'm all for characters maturing and developing, but she's taken a turn for the worse. She complains, she whines, and Jim (John Krasinski) is now legally obligated to give her his shoulder to cry on. It's exhausting to watch—and it's definitely unfunny.
The Office was doing so well, too. The wedding episode was a smashing success, the pregnancy jokes have been fresh, the show has been giving more play to characters like Oscar (Oscar Nunez) and Creed (Creed Bratton) and the online extras have been hilarious. Can one bad apple really spoil the whole barrel of laughs? I really hope not.

Expanded 'World News' Tonight

"World News with Charles Gibson" will air a special one-hour edition tonight focused on yesterday's massacre at Fort Hood.

Bob Woodruff, Terry Moran and Ryan Owens will report from Texas on the investigation, the victims and the heroic first responders. Brian Ross will report on what is known about the alleged shooter and his motives. Martha Raddatz and Bill Weir will contribute reporting on the impact on the US military.

In addition, Charlie Gibson will have an exclusive interview with Army Chief of Staff General George Casey Jr. and his wife, Sheila.

Last night on the broadcast, Gibson reflected on his time in the military, discussing the location of the massacre with correspondent John Quinones: "I go back to my time in the military, John. This is a processing center. And I remember, we used to line up to get shots and whatever just before we were about to do anything."

ABC's Jeffrey Kofman will also be reporting live form Orlando on the mass shooting there.

Survivor: A Tribe Divided Cannot Stand

Well, that was exciting, wasn't it? If we were really honest with ourselves, we could all admit that this season of Survivor had, until last night, been something of a snooze-fest. I mean, Foa Foa just kept losing, girls just kept getting voted off, and Probst kept being snide about people's failures while pretending to be sympathetic. There were few twists and/or turns, no watercooler moments, nothing buzzy but the bugs. Perhaps sensing this creeping tedium, at Day 18 or so, the producers threw their ace card in the pot and called a merge. A merge! Oh how exciting! Two tribes become one, dynamics shift, empires rise and fall. Or, you know, the weaker tribe just gets picked off one by one and that's that. Luckily, that's not what we got last night.
Because last week's "Scenes from the next..." totally gave it away, we knew the merge was coming. But it was still thrilling to watch the two teams, bedraggled and weary, wander down the beach towards one another, knowing that something big was happening. And it was of course the biggest thing, that Foa Foa had fallen far enough and would be absorbed into fattened Galu. The Foa Foa camp was torn down and abandoned, the earth salted so nothing else may ever grow in that accursed place. The Survivor music swelled and, just like that, the whole game was changed.
Once the pandemonium of a celebratory meal (with alcohol!) had died down, relief and excitement gave way to tension and scheming. Because there was a clear-cut path in mind, Galu swiftly working through the ranks of Foa Foa then turning cannibal on each other, the Foa'ers had to scramble extra hard to try and save their skinny, malnourished necks. And scramble hard they did. Russell went into immediate bulldog mode and basically knocked over wicked Laura as he tried to sway her to his cause. But she held firm and steely and kindly reminded old Russ that, um, he doesn't have the upper-hand in any way shape or form, so he ought to maybe play nice. Russell's eyes turned a fiery, confused blue and you could see it right there. He lost the game right there. Though he got a stay of execution last night, I don't think he's long for this camp. He's just not nearly as smart as he thinks he is and, as it turns out, he really cracks under pressure.
The dumbest thing he did was show Laura the immunity idol. Why on the first round of the big poker championship a player would decide to just wave his hand around saying "Look, look! Look what I've got!" is pretty beyond me. Again with that whole Russell not actually being so smart thing. Laura, naturally, ran and blabbed the whole thing to her friends, and in about ten minutes everyone's suspicions were confirmed. Russell had an immunity idol, and now it was up to them to get rid of it. So they hatched a neat little plan, to make Russ think that he was getting voted out so he'd play the idol. Haha, joke would be on him, and then they'd kill him and dump him in a quarry next week when he's unprotected. It was a surefire plan. The only person who could potentially botch it was Erik, who had machinations of his own whirring away.
See, Erik wanted to remain firm in his Shambo and The Boys (great band name) alliance, so aimed to get rid of Monica or Jaison. Confident with his be-immunity'd status, Erik swung his, erm, idol around the camp like he just didn't care. He thought he was running the show, and for a second there so did I. But a lot of the campers didn't take too kindly to his bossiness, and so their true final solution began to form. They'd still get Russ to play the idol, but then, instead of some helpless other, they'd pounce on and devour Erik. Man, Galu turned on each other quicker than a box of Samoa cookies get eaten at my house. It went at breakneck speed, this sudden dissolving of Galu's tribal lines. Sad. But also fascinating.
So when Tribal came, of course Russell was successfully hoodwinked into playing his idol for no reason. Oops! Now it's gone and he has no bargaining chips left, so I think he's out next week. And then came the swift brutal axe for Erik. All the Galu girls voted for him, naturally. As did the Foa Foa kids. And so did Brett. That fink! That turncoat! That adorable, huggable traitor. Oh, Bretty. I can't stay mad at you. But seriously, that was surprising. Erik looked flabbergasted—thunderstruck and speechless. I kinda was too. A player I thought might win the whole damn thing was devoured by merciless island people a whole 12 spots short of the million. What a disappointment.
And now we have all these weird new shaky alliances. Obviously the Galu boys will have to do some scrambling of their own now that their leader has been killed. I predict that some dynamics will shift and the three remaining Foa kids, realizing suddenly that they might not just be cannon fodder, will end up siding against the Monica/Laura/Kelly trifecta of evil and we'll watch those griping girls get picked off. Which means... oh boy... I think Shambo might end up falling ass backwards into like a fourth place finish on this. Just by sheer virtue of being such a shambling shambles, Shambo might pull this one out and keep slipping through cracks until someone finally says "Hey, wait a minute! What the heck is she still doing here?" I don't think it's strategy on her part, but wouldn't it be amazing if it were? It would be on Cerie levels of awesomeness. But, again, I don't think it is. I think it's just dumb luck. Let's see if anyone notices.
That's that! Erik, victim of another "blindside", as Probst so loves to call it. The Foa Foa kids did a nice job of insinuating themselves into the new group, though I guess it wasn't that difficult as apparently Galu was a lot weaker than we'd thought. What will happen next?? I mean, it felt like the game really started last night. It's on. The pistol's been fired. Cue music.
Uhhhoowweeeahhhh Uhhowweeeahhhh...

Jackson Series to Debut Next Month

A&E has finally announced the date for their Jackson family reality series, filming for which has already begun. Michael Jackson turned down a Jacksons reunion concert, putting a halt to the proposed series. His death this past summer brought new life to the idea.

Now, the show will include an in-depth look at how the family is coming to terms with the loss of it’s most well-known son. So far, there’s no definite word on whether or not Michael’s three children will be a part of the series. The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty will premiere on December 13. Six episodes have been ordered so far.

"Loads Of Layoffs" At A&E And Lifetime

2:15 PM UPDATE: I've learned that 100 people are being laid off across "several divisions" of the A&E Television Networks yesterday and today "as a direct result of the merger". It will make those employees feel so much better that management tells me it's "no one in a decision making role." A&E Television Networks in August acquired Lifetime Entertainment, and everything is now owned by the Disney-ABC Television Group, Hearst and NBC Universal. Big Media = Big Mergers = Big Mistakes.

Jackson Reality Show Premiere Date Announced

The A&E cable network has announced the premiere date for the Jackson family reality show.

A&E has announced that "The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty" will debut on December 13 and focus on Jackie, Jermaine, Tito and Marlon Jackson as the four brothers get together and gear up for a concert tour.

The show will also cover the Jackson brothers' lives coping with the untimely death of Michael Jackson. It is unclear if the King of Pop's children will appear in the show.

Kathy Ireland Reveals Secret 'Dancing with the Stars' Injury

"Dancing with the Stars" can take a toll on the contestants. Now Kathy Ireland has revealed the secret pain she's been suffering since doing the show!

Taking to her Twitter account, Kathy states: "...the truth is, after my little spin on DWTS I'm going to have knee surgery."
