    5 Sep 2015 | 6:00 am
In 1985, my partner, David and I created a comeback show for Mary Tyler Moore called (oddly enough) MARY.  We were extremely fortunate to have a great casting director in Molly Lopata.   All summer we spent auditioning actors for the series.  Most you've heard of.  Some even big names. One day Molly brought in a newcomer to read for the role of Jo Tucker, Mary's acerbic workmate.  We loved her.  She was funny, real, and so fresh.  A definite call-back. Eventually we had to go to CBS to get cast approval.  They asked to see two candidates for each…

Carson Clark asks:I've been listening to some of the old radio show comedies on the Sirius/XM classics channel. I was wondering what it would be like for you to write a radio comedy script? Would it be easier, more challenging? On a side note, I can believe audiences piled into a theater to watch actors talk into microphones. In a sense I have written radio plays. Director Jim Burrows always contended that CHEERS episodes were just radio plays. Many times during CHEERS filmings Jim would turn…

Every January the LA TIMES Calendar section would devote a Sunday edition to all the new movies coming out that year. As you read through the thumbnails you thought, “this is going to be the best year for movies EVER.” Every premise sounded intriguing. Aside from all the sequels (even back then) there was one novel idea after another. And each film had A-list actors, directors, or writers attached. Then you started watching them as the year unfolded. Ugh! What happened? One LONE RANGER (starring the great Johnny Depp you know) after another. The following year would be the same thing. And…

What was meant to be a two-week trip, became 4 and I became an integral part of a very important time in my first grand baby's life, and in those first few weeks that my daughter became a mother. A manager who I worked closely with before I co-founded Aha! always said "honestly" when he really wanted something. Almost a decade ago, in September 2005, my editors approached me with the idea of starting a fall-TV-review blog. The name would be Tuned In, because TV. (We did not spend a lot of time thinking about the name.) It would be temporary, like a pop-up store at the mall; I’d review the new fall series, then we’d close it down. My first post reviewed Martha, the post-prison talk show starring Martha Stewart. My last–well, it turned out I loved blogging, and I found more and more things to write about, and that last post never came. Until now. This is my last post for TIME, my…

    James Poniewozik
    14 Aug 2015 | 5:57 am
For over 45 years, Sesame Street has been teaching America’s kids about numbers and feelings. The deal that its producer, Sesame Workshop, struck on Thursday to move the beloved children’s series to HBO is an education in both. On the numbers, the deal is probably better than any likely alternative. Thanks to that HBO cash, Sesame Street will be able to produce nearly twice as many episodes in a production schedule that had long been shrinking, and will develop new series for kids as well. Episodes and archives will still be available on PBS, which will have more money free for…

I’m going to tell you about David Simon’s absorbing new HBO miniseries, Show Me a Hero (premieres Aug. 16), but first I need you to work with me. Suspend, if you can, the belief that a period TV drama about a battle over housing policy is going to be boring. As countless HGTV shows know, there are few things in the average life more fraught with stress, emotion and psychic investment than obtaining and keeping shelter. A home is not just four walls. It’s physical and financial security, a repository of self-image, a vessel of hopes and fears. It’s certainly not boring…

I come here not to bury True Detective season 2. It did a good enough job of that by itself. The season ended much as it began, in a purple-prose haze of portent, masculine agony and confusion. It had too much plot and too little story; its murder mystery was so convoluted and foggy that, paradoxically, the show felt formless, like a string of long, unrelated audition monologues one after another. For eight episodes it turned and spun, like a driver on one of its complex California highway interchanges, circling and circling and never finding the right exit. But True Detective will likely be…

But a subsequent stint in consulting that led her to a job at Disney ignited her love of media and technology for good. “That was the beginning of me seeing what it would be like to work for a consumer-focused company that has a fantastic brand [and] that is very-mission based,” says Everson in an interview with Beet.TV. “And really that alerted me to how much I actually liked [the] business.” After Disney, Everson attended Harvard Business School, where she…
  • Old Media Resurface In A World Of Change: Susan Lyne

    Robert Andrews
    1 Sep 2015 | 12:59 pm
In the narrative of media evolution, what was once new becomes old and, ultimately, becomes obsolete. But vinyl music is enjoying a bounce – so what chance a return for other media formats? “I’m seeing people beginning to pick up formats that were considered dead and reimagine them,” says Susan Lyne, the veteran media executive who previously ran AOL’s brand group and now runs its BBG venture wing. “Five years ago, people were talking about magazines being dead. What I’ms seeing a lot of … are these gorgeous new magazines that have a very specific…
  • SMG’s CEO Desmond on Business Success: “Be Humble and Listen”

    Robert Andrews
    30 Aug 2015 | 8:18 pm
Riding the crest of a wave is a pretty good feeling. But the bigger lessons can come from falling off and hitting the bottom. Many a business guru is fond of the ironic value of failure. That’s a notion that the boss of one of the biggest ad groups subscribes to, too. “I’ve always learned more from failure than success,” Starcom MediaVest Group CEO Laura Desmond tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “At times, when people are on the top of the wave, riding it and feeling like nothing can touch them – those are the points in time when you really have to…

Why did you get in to advertising? For Brian Lesser, it was because his dad showed him the ropes. Now Lesser runs WPP-owned Xaxis, one of the technology companies helping make advertising more targeted and more relevant. “When I was a kid, my father ran advertising agencies … I always liked the commercials better than the programming on television,” Lesser tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “When my father had ‘Take your kid to work’ day, I would go in and meet his colleagues at the advertising agencies. I distinctly remember thinking, ‘This is the coolest job…
  • From Mississippi Teenage DJ to Media Mogul, the Amazing Journey of Bob Pittman

    Cotton Delo
    27 Aug 2015 | 8:49 am
Now the chairman and CEO of iHeartMedia, Inc., Bob Pittman got his start in the media business as a 15-year-old disc jockey in Mississippi, where he grew up. Motivated to earn money so he could take airplane flying lessons, he first applied to the local men’s clothing store and then tried to get a job bagging groceries at the Piggly Wiggly. When that failed, he walked into the local radio station, where the owner asked him to read some wire copy into a tape recorder. “He goes, ‘That’s good enough, go to New Orleans and get your third class radio telephone operator’s license, and…

  • Minority Report Review – TV FOX

    3 Sep 2015 | 1:23 pm
Despite getting to say Steven Spielberg a lot, FOX’s Minority Report has its work cut out for it as a concept. Though the film was something of a success, and met with critical approval, even it struggled to work the Philip K. Dick short story into an expanded narrative. Such is Dick’s genius really. Though not all his stories are brilliant, he was at least smart enough to know that some concepts work best if you just get in and get out. Part of the sci-fi genre’s ability is to let the reader/audience chew on an idea on their own. Now we have to translate that into something…
  • Miss You Already Trailer

    3 Sep 2015 | 10:24 am
Oddly enough, it seems like it’s been a while since someone came out with a chick flick that managed to make its way into the true upper echelon of standard women’s films. This stands out to me, as the trailer for Miss You Already hits, because in the last few weeks more than one television show has included women listing the movies they were going to watch as they got their “girlfriend weekend” on, and all the titles were from movies in the ’80s, and most of them starred Julia Roberts. Think about it. Sure, there are a few movies in the last 15 years that might…
  • Cate Blanchett Will Play Lucille Ball in Biopic

    3 Sep 2015 | 7:10 am
Sometimes industry news tears you in half, even when you know it’s a fairly interesting move. Cate Blanchett is going to star in a biopic of Lucille Ball, which will apparently be scripted by Aaron Sorkin. The news is strange in a variety of ways, even among those who would be very interested to see a Lucille Ball film. First off, that’s a pretty small demographic to go after at this point. Is the world looking for a Lucille Ball story? Of course, biopics are a big part of the industry, and a lot of great films have been produced that give us the life of someone who might not have…
  • Knock Knock Trailer Strange Turn For Eli Roth

    3 Sep 2015 | 6:26 am
Eli Roth‘s films are the stuff of very distinct taste, even within the horror genre. He made a name for himself with Cabin Fever and Hostel, and nothing will get you attention like a film that no one wants you to see (The Green Inferno), but the new trailer for Knock Knock seems like an odd turn. Of course, trailers have been known to give skewed views of films, but you’d hope that some sort of sell would show up. In this case, not only do we pretty much get the whole movie in the trailer, but I’m not sure who the film is for, apart from those who have thus far stayed away…
  • Dwayne Johnson Gives Some Hints About Disney’s Jungle Cruise

    2 Sep 2015 | 10:12 am
When you first heard about Pirates of the Caribbean, you thought it was a pretty stupid idea to make a film based on a ride, and you were right. As bad as endless sequels and reboots might be, you thought we were really running out of ideas when Disney has to start kicking out films based on rides… because that doesn’t even make any sense. It turned out to be a good film, but only because it actually had nothing to do with the ride at all, except that both feature pirates. Of course, The Haunted Mansion came out at about the same time, just to prove that even Disney can’t…

We have seen some unusual developments in the property market over the last decade, from the rise of flat pack housing to the emergence of quick acting property buyers who purchase homes on the brink of repossession. The former example is particularly interesting, however, as it links a renowned brand with the development of functional, corporeal structures. This has changed the nature of architecture in the modern age, and there are similar events that have also had a significant impact in recent times. The Emergence of LEGO Architecture Most recently, Danish toy company LEGO made a bold…

    Bill Young
    4 Sep 2015 | 10:03 pm
Mr. Bean turns 25! Yesterday’s impromptu London adventure marked 25 years since the Mr. Bean pilot was shown on British television back in 1990. Mr Bean’s day out began in St James’ Park where Mr. Bean, a.k.a. Rowan Atkinson, stopped for a selfie with the Millennium Eye and bought an ice cream. After a brief stop at the Knightsbridge department store, Harrods, it was off to the Mall with a police escort normally reserved for members of the Royal Family, arriving in style at the front gates of Buckingham Palace where a pile of small presents and a relatively large crowd of…

As we continue our 40th anniversary look back at what is, perhaps, the greatest comedy film of all-time, we found a gem from the DVD extras of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Written and performed by the Monty Python comedy group, the film was conceived during the hiatus between the third and fourth series of their BBC television program, Monty Python’s Flying Circus.  With a budget that, by today’s standards, would be nothing short of laughable, the ‘Holy Grail’ is considered to be the troupes first “proper” film costing approximately £230,000…

As one of the new crime drama mainstays gets ready to enter its’ third series on ITV and PBS, we are once again reminded not only of how empty we felt when the original Inspector Morse series ended some 15 years ago but how unknowingly elated we would soon be with the news that we were about to be treated to not only the continuation of the Morse brand with the Inspector Lewis series but also the Endeavour Morse prequel concept from the minds of Russell Lewis and Colin Dexter. Set in 1965, the original Endeavour series one-off centered around the early-days back story of everyone’s…

TV networks are constantly searching for fresh material, and with so much competition for viewers, the pressure for unique ideas is high. Peculiar hybrid shows and alternate realities draw immediate curiosity, and it’s a lot easier to maintain viewers if you can get them invested from the beginning. Overly ambitious ideas can backfire, however, leaving a network with a very expensive failure. These latest pilot ideas take a lot of creative risks, but the networks hope they’ll be just crazy enough to succeed. “Son of Zorn” — “SNL” Stars as Animated…

The Oscar-nominated actor, who portrays General Zod in the upcoming superhero clash, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, offered up extensive details about his character during an interview with Vulture last month — and fans ate up every bit of info. Shannon told a funny on-set anecdote that involved him getting stuck in a studio porta-potty because he was wearing flippers on his hands as part of his General Zod costume. Marc Forster, Ron Perlman, Dana Delaney and Alona Tal at the London launch of Hand of God  LONDON WAS the setting for the launch of Amazon Prime’s new original series Hand of God last night. The venue, suitably enough for a drama about a judge who fancies himself as the Lord’s instrument of vengeance, was in a deconsecrated church on Euston Road. The stars –Ron Perlman, Dana Delaney and Alona Tal – glammed up for the occasion (well, the ladies did), and they were joined by the director Marc Forster, who’s known for World War Z and Quantum of Solace, along…

New start – Ray Winstone as Jimmy Rose Ray Winstone plays a hardman with a difference in this well-acted family drama ITV, starts Sunday, 30 August, 9pm IN THE ROLE that made him a star, as young offender Carlin in 1979’s Scum, Ray Winstone rose to the top of a brutal prison system to emerge as the Daddy. It’s ironic that now in middle age he’s back playing a thug, but this time he’s the Grandaddy, and a bit of a has-been. Which makes for a good role for Winstone. School bells are ringing and that means backpacks are overloaded with heavy books and piles of homework. But school’s not all bad. Thanks to the hot teachers in some of our favorite shows, we have a whole new outlook on those hallowed halls. Even though we may not be heading back to school this fall, the hot teachers of the small screen make us wish we were. Take a look at our gallery of teachers who make sitting in class a pleasure instead of a chore. Mr. Fitz on “Pretty Little Liars” We don’t think it takes anything but waking up in the morning to make Mr. Fitz (Ian Harding) hot.
  • Are These New Series Crazy Enough To Work?

    Valerie David
    2 Sep 2015 | 9:26 am
TV networks are constantly searching for fresh material, and with so much competition for viewers, the pressure for unique ideas is high. Peculiar hybrid shows and alternate realities draw immediate curiosity, and it’s a lot easier to maintain viewers if you can get them invested from the beginning. Overly ambitious ideas can backfire, however, leaving a network with a very expensive failure. These latest pilot ideas take a lot of creative risks, but the networks hope they’ll be just crazy enough to succeed. “Son of Zorn” — “SNL” Stars as Animated…

The former hosts of “Top Gear” are leaving pay TV for Amazon. Is this the biggest TV news in the world? Once James May and Richard Hammond declined to return to the BBC following the firing of their “Top Gear” colleague Jeremy Clarkson, the trio became one of the biggest potential gets in all of show business. “Top Gear” was, after all, the most widely watched TV show on the planet — ¬and with that kind of popularity, someone was bound to take a chance on the irascible Clarkson and his mates. No matter which network Clarkson, Hammond, and May decided to sign with, it was going…

The dry spell is over, and the fall TV season is finally here. While the vast array of cable shows keeps us occupied throughout the summer, there’s nothing quite as exciting as the explosion of new series and specials every September. This year’s lineup is particularly impressive, with big name stars, rebooted favorites, two series rescued from oblivion, and two comedians attempting to fill some pretty big late night shoes. Here are the highlights of the packed fall schedule. New Comedies September 16 — “Moonbeam City” on Comedy Central The comedy network brings…

Now that we know our new favorite show will be coming back on Sept. 23, we’re champing at the bit for the next round of in-fighting, backstabbing, and modern family values from the most diabolical family to hit the small screen since the Carringtons established their oil empire on “Dynasty.” Here are five things we hope to see when season two of “Empire”…

  • Mostly Nobody Will Ever Love You

    Kat
    13 Aug 2015 | 7:16 pm
Image via Indiewire There are nearly eight billion people on Earth.  Most of them will never love you. What does it mean when the television characters that move you are terrible people?  After watching the most recent episode of Rick and Morty and rewatching both seasons of Bojack Horseman, I decided to ask myself why.  And the answer is simple and kind of tragic: it is easily to feel emotionally connected to characters who hate themselves especially if your own self-esteem is paper-weighted by a lump of self-loathing and a half-bottle of cheap chardonnay.   Don’t know what that feels…

I’m still watching TV.  Though I had to abandon some shows and relegate others to the sidelines, I still caught a solid bit of what’s been happening the last few months.  If you read my…

For most of the episode we don’t even catch a glimpse of the monsters. Instead the information that we as an audience gleans, comes from the large number of victims that they leave behind. Dan
    2 Sep 2015 | 2:30 am
After last weekend's binge of Banshee's first season, it seems only fair to report on the following weekend's binge of the second. Most TV shows have better sophomore years, because the writers know what worked and the best showrunners fix things based on constructive criticism. You also have something tangible that you've made, so it's simply easier to develop an existing world and write material that plays to various actor's strengths. However, some shows struggle in year two because they've exhausted their core concept and it can be difficult to retool things for a longer haul now it's…

  • UnREAL Actor Joins Game Of Thrones Season 6 As Sam’s Brother Dickon

    Mark Cassidy
    4 Sep 2015 | 6:33 pm
The new additions to the cast of the sixth season of HBO’s Game Of Thrones are coming slowly but surely, and the latest is Freddie Stroma (UnREAL, the final Harry Potter movies), who’ll be playing  a character that’s only briefly mentioned in George R.R. Martin’s source novels. The leaked  character breakdown from a few months back  led to speculation that Samwell Tarly’s father and brother would be introduced next year, and that seems to have been confirmed as Stroma has been cast as Dickon Tarly. All we know about this chap is what Sam told Jon when…
  • First Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Promo Teases Lash

    Mark Cassidy
    4 Sep 2015 | 4:45 pm
Though much shorter than the Arrow trailer that dropped earlier today, this first promo for the third season of Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. still manages to do a great job of teasing some of the big developments we have to look forward to when the show returns later this month. We know Daisy (Chloe Bennett) will be assembling her own team of Secret Warriors under the watchful eye of Coulson (Clark Gregg), and in the teaser we see her begin to do just that. There’s also quick flashes of some of the other returning characters, such as Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Mockingbird…
  • First Trailer And Synopsis For Arrow Season 4

    4 Sep 2015 | 4:13 pm
The first official trailer for the fourth season of The CW’s Arrowhas been released via Stephen Amell’s (Oliver Queen) Facebook page, and there’s a lot packed into it. Not only do we get a glimpse of Ollie living the good (and safe) life with Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), but we get an idea of what brings him back to Star City courtesy of first looks at villains such as Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and Anarky (Alexander Calvert). Aside from that, we see Diggle suited up in that much-maligned costume, and a few snippets of some new allies for team Arrow: Echo…
  • First Look At Hannibal’s Rutina Wesley As Lady Cop In Arrow Season 4

    Josh Wilding
    4 Sep 2015 | 11:25 am
Fresh off a very impressive stint in the third and final season of Hannibal, Rutina Wesley has lined up a new gig in season four of Arrow. She’ll play Liza Warner, a character better known as Lady Cop in the comics. It’s highly doubtful that she’ll go by that moniker in the series, but as you can see from the image above, she’s certainly a…lady cop. The behind the scenes photo was Tweeted out by star Paul Blackthorne (Captain Lance), and it’s previously been confirmed that the actress will be taking on the role of a member of the anti-vigilante task force…
  • The Top 10 Episodes Of Arrow So Far

    Adam A. Donaldson
    4 Sep 2015 | 11:10 am
It wouldn’t be 100 per cent accurate to put the credit (or the blame) for the impressive slate of superhero shows on our TVs on Arrow, but the success of the CW’s adaptation of the Emerald Archer probably has something to do with the fact that during the 2015/16 season there will be over a dozen comic book inspired series across the television dial. The immediate success of Arrow, and the way it captured all the drama and thrills of its graphic novel origins, launched a TV trend that’s still unfolding, and a little empire of its own that now includes two spinoffs. MORE NEWS FROM THE WEB…
