  • Let’s stop weak Bachelor parodies, like Blake Shelton’s Farm Hunk

    Andy Dehnart
    26 Jan 2015 | 12:56 pm
The latest parody of The Bachelor was on Saturday Night Live this weekend, with Blake Shelton as “Farm Hunk,” obviously Chris Soules. Based on some headlines — “Blake Shelton mercilessly mocks every bit of ‘The Bachelor’,” “This Bachelor Parody Was Blake Shelton’s Best SNL Sketch” — I was expecting something, you know, funny or scathing. It’s neither. The... read more » This story was published on reality blurred - Reality TV news, behind-the-scenes details, reviews, analysis, and criticism. Andy Dehnart finds…

My father is on Pinterest. I can't think of a sentence I've ever written more bizarre than that. Why he is on Pinterest is a total mystery to me, as well as how. I don’t disagree with him.

    22 Jan 2015 | 11:10 am
If someone says it’s not about the money, it’s about the money. If someone says it’s not about sex, it’s about sex. And if a network says a new show is not a clone of something, it’s–well, starting Thursdays at 9 p.m. on Fox, it’s Backstrom, with Rainn Wilson as a cranky, insult-spewing cop imitating the House formula with diminishing results. Backstrom is directly based on the work of Swedish novelist Leif G.W. Persson, but he’s also in the tradition of TV’s Brilliant Jerks–the caustic, abrasive antiheroes we grow to love, or at…
  • Knope and Change: The Politics of Parks and Recreation

    James Poniewozik
    22 Jan 2015 | 6:24 am
Reviewing “Leslie and Ron” earlier this week, I wrote that part of the appeal of Parks and Recreation, specifically Leslie and Ron’s friendship, is that it’s a model–or fantasy–of how people of opposite politics can still work together and care about each other. It’s a sitcom about politics that works, in part, because of how its characters put friendship over politics–or at least aside from politics. But what about the show’s politics itself? I wrote about that in my farewell column to Parks in the print TIME this week (subscription…
  • Parks and Recreation Watch: We Didn’t Start the Fire

    James Poniewozik
    21 Jan 2015 | 6:22 am
Tuesday night, you could have watched the State of the Union address. You could have sat through the statements and zingers and counterstatements and counterzingers, all wrapped up with hours of punditry analyzing each party’s positioning and long game before concluding that, in the end, not a whole lot was likely to happen. Or you could have watched two episodes of Parks and Recreation, on which two ideological opposites got locked in a room until they admitted that they cared about each other. “Leslie and Ron,” sweet as a Pawnee waffle without being syrupy, showcased an…
  • Larry Wilmore’s First Nightly Show: The Underdog As Top Dog

    James Poniewozik
    20 Jan 2015 | 5:27 am
When Larry Wilmore’s new Comedy Central show had to change its title from The Minority Report to The Nightly Show, the comedian told me it was a good thing. He wanted his news-comedy show to focus on the underdog, and he didn’t want people making assumptions just because he’d been The Daily Show‘s “senior black correspondent”: “At least they won’t have that expectation,” he said. “Why’s he not talking about black today? What’s going on?” Nobody gave the news cycle that memo. Even though Wilmore joked that he’d…

  • Evening News Ratings: Week of Jan. 19

    Chris Ariens
    27 Jan 2015 | 7:51 am
“NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams” wins the week of January 19, 2015 in both total viewers and the A25-54 demo. But all three evening newscasts were down compared to the same week last year. This week last year saw the polar vortex sweeping across the nation, which provided double digit viewership growth. So, when compared to last year, all three newscasts saw double digit drops, in the younger demo and single digit drops in total viewers. “Nightly” was down -7% in viewers and down -11% in the demo; ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” was…
  • Why 2 Feet of Predicted Snow Was More Like 8 Inches

    Chris Ariens
    27 Jan 2015 | 6:43 am
Those predictions of up to two feet of snow from the #Blizzardof2015 were off, by a lot in some parts. As of 7amET, 7.8 inches of snow has fallen in Central Park. LaGuardia Airport measured 11 inches, while Mattituck, on the eastern end of Long Island, did get that 2 feet, 24.8 inches according to a trained spotter. And the storm is still stirring things up in New England. But for New York City, home to the broadcast and cable news networks, the forecast of a “historic” storm — leading to a travel ban and shut-down of subway and commuter train service — did not arrive…
  • John Miller, Peter Arnett Testify in Terror Trial

    Mark Joyella
    27 Jan 2015 | 6:27 am
Two high profile former network newsers–former CBS and ABC News correspondent John Miller and former CNN correspondent Peter Arnett–testified Monday in the terror trial of Khaled al-Fawwaz, an accused al Qaeda lieutenant. Miller testified that he met Al-Fawwaz in London in 1998 while attempting to land an interview with Osama bin Laden. The Associated Press’ Tom Hays reports Miller testified that Al-Fawwaz insisted that Miller’s production team “had far too many people and that only one or two could travel for this interview if it were to happen,” Miller…
  • Mike Seidel Takes a Spill

    27 Jan 2015 | 5:46 am
A morning chat with Al Roker–who pulled a blizzard edition of “Rokerthon”–ended with a spill for The Weather Channel’s Mike Seidel.  It was the very end of the “Wake Up with Al” liveshot, with Roker asking Seidel if he’d found a place to grab breakfast in snowbound Plymouth, Massachusetts. Seidel said the crew had some beef jerky, and then he fell out of frame. “Whoa. Whoa. Mike. Are you okay,” asked Roker as Seidel slowly got back to his feet. “A gust threw me over,” Seidel explained:
  • CNN Gets its Own Jeopardy! Category

    Chris Ariens
    26 Jan 2015 | 4:39 pm
CNN got its own category on Jeopardy! today. The clues in “CNN World Languages,” were read by CNN foreign correspondents Will Ripley in Japan, Max Foster in London and Jim Bittermann in Paris.  The $1,200 clue was about CNN Chile’s Tomás Mosciatti. One of the contestants guessed correctly that Mosciatti is known as the Chilean Larry King.  The CNN category comes not long after it was revealed that CNN president Jeff Zucker reached out to a Sony TV executive about whether the company behind the long-running game show might consider producing a version for CNN.  That…

  • NBC Universal Launches Audience Targeting for TV

    Daisy Whitney
    27 Jan 2015 | 5:50 am
FORT LAUDERDALE –  NBCUniversal is betting big on the marriage of context and content to drive return on investment in ads, says Joe Cady, VP of Advertising at NBC Universal, at the Beet.TV executive retreat this past weekend. Earlier this month, NBC Universal launched an audience targeting platform for television the harnesses both first-party and third-party data. The platform is a big step in bringing programmatic-style buying to TV buying. “The idea was to take the portfolio of broadcast, cable and digital. We layer data on top of that to match the right message to the right…

  • Nielsen To Measure Smart TV’s In 2015: Feigenson

    26 Jan 2015 | 1:49 pm
FORT LAUDERDALE — The coming digitzation of TV may seem set to pave the way for measuring audiences in a digital manner used to internet media houses – but Nielsen is stating its case for a panel-based approach it seems set to launch later this year. “We’re dedicated to having a solution to smart TVs in 2015 of some sort or another,” Nielsen Digital MD Andrew Feigenson tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “Unlike PC or a mobile device, which tend to be a one-one-one experience, the big screen, there tends to be multiple people in front of it. “In the…

FORT LAUDERDALE — Personalization of web editorial experiences has been talked about for years, with few publishers deciding to let their readers customize their own editions. BBC News last week launched its most personalizable app to date, but content recommendation service Taboola‘s CEO says publishers should go further. “We’re just getting to be overwhelmed with information,” Adam Singolda tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “The future from a publisher standpoint is to think about a web of one (individual). When I get to your site, your app and mobile…

  • Back in the Hospital: Our Rainbow Baby’s Pregnancy is Nerve Wracking

    James Sims
    19 Jan 2015 | 11:03 am
It has been eight months since we set foot in the labor and delivery unit of this hospital — we lost our baby girl in room 13 last May, following a nightmarish few months consumed by trips to the emergency room, bleeding with unknown causes, and bouts of contractions. A fluke. Random occurrence. Not likely to repeat itself. Those are the words our doctor used in describing the loss of Angel Belle at 23 weeks gestation (read more about our loss on The Huffington Post). Comforting? Not really. Yet, as we approached our next pregnancy, I tried using that theory as a mantra. For the first…

Could a bottle of water truly be the catalyst for my emotional breakdown? Sitting in the waiting room of a funeral home with my wife — we had lost our baby girl two days earlier — I found myself confounded by the most inane details scattered throughout this somber place of business. Beyond watching five seasons of HBO’s Six Feet Under, I had never stepped foot inside of a funeral home. Pop culture touch points had certainly prepared me for the overall look and feel, but much like a movie set, those glimpses were merely facades. This was no Fisher household. It was a…

  • Adding Music to Movies by Way of the Stage: Sleepless in Seattle to Kinky Boots

    James Sims
    8 Jun 2013 | 12:14 pm
Glancing at the shows nominated for Best Musical for this year’s Tony Awards, it is easy to mistake the list as being a Hollywood box office report. All four shows — Bring It On: The Musical; A Christmas Story, The Musical; Kinky Boots; and Matilda The Musical — are derivatives of feature films, albeit the latter is based on the book rather than the ’90s film adaptation. Is it that producers prefer the comfort of well-known stories, are creative types running low on original ideas, or are movies the new “out of town” tryout for a plot before heading to…

    26 Jan 2015 | 6:44 am
Of all the movies kicking off the summer this year, there aren’t many aiming at your funny bone, and none look better than She’s Funny That Way. Of course, a stellar cast and a whimsical situation is no guarantee, but this one could be the surprise hit of the first half of the year. Most notably, from the trailer, Owen Wilson ought to be able to run with this role, and we’re apparently getting a multi-faceted character from Imogen Poots, who is going to have to sell us on a lot of different angles as the plot progresses. It should be a lot of fun. Check out the trailer, and…

Fury left us in such a strange place that I ultimately called it a kind of anti-movie. Despite agreeing with most of my problems with the film, Shane ended up rating it quite a bit higher, and actually, I didn’t rate it that low myself. If you listen to us regularly, you probably know that we are becoming famous for spending a lot of our time talking about the negatives of movies we rate highly, and the positives of movies we give very low scores, but with Fury, the movie was so odd that I don’t think we knew where to go with our dissection of it. • First look at Sir Ian McKellen as….’Mr. Holmes’

    Bill Young
    26 Jan 2015 | 10:03 pm
Ok, it’s not set in the 21st century and it’s not Benedict Cumberbatch but it is 1947, it is Sir Ian McKellen and it definitely is Sherlock! Given the fact that the Sherlock-Nation will be without a new Benedict Cumberbatch episode for roughly another 11 months, we all are in desperate need of a periodic ‘Sherlock Holmes’ image every once in awhile no matter who Sherlock is and what year it is set. Fortunately, in this particular case, we are talking about the one and only Sir Ian McKellen. The one Sherlock Holmes feature that is set to come out in the not-too-distant…

It seemed harmless enough. An innocent Q&A with Martin Clunes that appeared in The Telegraph on Friday seemed quite harmless on the surface. A nice bit about how he spends his rare ‘off-time’ (currently watching BAFTA-nominated films with wife, Philippa, who is not only on the BAFTA jury but also doubles as producer of Doc Martin), references to his four dogs, a Labrador, a Jack Russell, a Jackahuahua (a Jack Russell-Chihuahua cross) and an eight-month-old cocker spaniel, detailed weekend farm-maintenance chores, a bit about his horses, including riding his Clydesdales, and,…

From the costumes to the music and period jargon, this big screen spinoff just might be the most fun hour on TV. Picking up where “Captain America: The First Avenger” left off, “Agent…

    27 Jan 2015 | 7:20 am
Well, from the looks of these new photos from next week’s (not this week’s) episode of The Vampire Diaries, airing on Feb. 5, it sure seems like things will be getting emotional on the series. But hey, a little death and sadness is nothing new for our favorite supernatural friends in Mystic Falls, is it? In this upcoming episode of The Vampire Diaries, which is titled “The Day I Tried to Live,” it’s Bonnie’s birthday, and she still has not yet returned to the present, making Jeremy pretty set on not celebrating her special day, despite Elena and Damon…

Here are five new shows to check out over the next month. Jan. 29: Fortitude (Pivot) Though Fortitude sounds like yet another Twin Peaks iteration, with a touch of Fargo thrown in for good measure, it could be a promising new show for the dual venture between Pivot and Sky. 27 Jan 2015 | 5:59 am
Can you believe that it has been over 25 years since the first episode of Saved by the Bell aired on television back on August 20, 1989?  It would be even longer than that if you include the Good Morning Miss Bliss episodes that aired on the Disney Channel from 1988 – 1989. Saved by the Bell grew to become the most popular live action children’s show on Saturday morning and started the television careers of Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Mario Lopez, and Tiffani Thiessen.  The show would last through 1993 and would have two spin-off shows.  Saved by the Bell: The College Years aired on primetime…

From the recently released photos from the episode, titled “The Sound and the Fury,” it looks like Barry will certainly have his hands full when battling his newest foe; however, if this new, just-released clip is any indication, it may be the emotional blows that Rathaway delivers to Barry that are the most dangerous, as he teases him with a secret that he knows about…

  • What is BBC iPlayer Shuffle?

    26 Jan 2015 | 7:16 am
The BBC is constantly updating and tweaking iPlayer to make it easier for you to find what you want to watch. But what about those times when you don’t know what you want? Enter iPlayer Shuffle.  The latest development in the BBC’s quest to improve iPlayer is Shuffle, a Last.fm-ish feature that attempts to mould itself to your viewing habits.  It’s a feature that’s very much in beta right now, available for you to try out on the BBC Taster site. Given that the BBC has placed much emphasis on content discovery in the past when talking about iPlayer updates, it seems natural that…
  • BBC iPlayer Shuffle is like Last.fm for TV

    26 Jan 2015 | 5:18 am
BBC iPlayer Shuffle is a new feature that creates a BBC TV channel tailored specifically for you.  The new service throws a random iPlayer stream at you. It could be anything from mainstream channels like BBC News and BBC One or from the arcane environs of BBC Four and BBC Parliament.  iPlayer Shuffle lets you watch what’s been served up or click through until you find something you like. It’ll keep an eye on how long you spend watching, whether you get bored and click next halfway through or if you watch the whole thing.  It’s exactly the same in principle as how Last.fm works to…
  • Five reasons we still need the TV licence fee

    26 Jan 2015 | 2:52 am
Why do we pay the TV license fee? Do we have to? Can we opt out? Should we get rid of it entirely?  James Peckham argues that whatever your views on the license fee, it's in all our best interests to keep paying it.  The license fee might be on the way out. Late last year politicians took to parliament to argue it should be scrapped and replaced with a subscription, and for non-payment to be decriminalised. More recently, a Culture Select Committee report called for current governing body, the BBC Trust, to be axed. So, should the licence fee be dumped outright? Does society, seemingly…

BBC Three, as in BBC Three the TV channel that’s broadcast on digital terrestrial, satellite and cable TV, will be shut down at some point in the future.  However, BBC Three isn’t ‘dying’ and it’s not being ‘scrapped’ - it’s just being moved away from TV. …

  • Do Musicals Belong on TV?

    Valerie David
    21 Jan 2015 | 1:42 pm
Many thought the critical and fan acclaim for 2001’s “Moulin Rouge” meant a musical revival was imminent. It wasn’t. Modern audiences have a limited appetite for the genre, making it especially difficult to launch a TV musical that viewers will tune in for weekly. Attempts to bring more music into the schedule had mixed results. With some critical and Twitter love for ABC’s limited series “Galavant,” is there still hope for more musical TV? Recent Musical Hits The “Glee” creators knew that a musical series could only succeed if it attacked on all…

New York City is my absolute favorite metropolis in the world. However, I only get there about once a year and, when I do, my schedule is packed with show tickets, dinner reservations, and socializing. I tend to feel like a bad girlfriend—just using the city for its incredible entertainment and then hopping the next subway back home. “Metropolis,” a one-hour Travel Channel special about Manhattan, completely changed my perspective on my city affair. I may know a lot about the city’s social scene but this clever documentary was full of interesting and inspiring facts about its heart.

  • Twin Peaks Ended Badly Because it Undermined its Female Characters

When I was growing up, Twin Peaks was usually only mentioned at the tail end of some jackass yammering a joke about someone’s boobs. I never watched it when it aired because I was a mere twelve years old and probably too focused on Nicktoons to care. Lately there’s been a massive uptick of Twin Peaks attention on the interwebs since the announcement that it would be returning to television in a limited run for Showtime. Having binged the entire series and subsequent film and extended/deleted scenes, I can say with certainty that the first season was a boundary-pushing stylistic…

  • Letterboxd: A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST • THE GUEST • DEATH BECOMES HER

    Dan
    27 Jan 2015 | 2:30 am
★½ (out of five)I really liked the relationship between Seth MacFarlane's acerbic sheep farmer and Charlize Theron's gunslinging outlaw, which develops plausibly from friendship to romance. In particular, Theron's a joy to watch as a sexy tomboy who starts to fall for MacFarlane's cynical, cowardly character. There were also some sight gags and comic ideas that worked (like how nobody in the Old West would smile in photographs because it's insane), but A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST couldn't overcome some substantial flaws: the story's too simplistic for an epic TWO-HOUR+ runtime, Liam…

    Dan
    24 Jan 2015 | 8:30 am
★★½ (out of five)There are two key problems with SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR: Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller waited too long to produce a sequel to their 2005 hit, which means the appetite for more tales from the titular city has long since evaporated; and the collection of stories featured in A DAME TO KILL FOR are all substandard compared to anything from before. But that's not to say SIN CITY 2's a complete washout. If you're a fan of the first film, it guarantees more of the same. Some feel the lack of noticeable evolution with the technology's a problem, but I don't agree. This…

    Dan
    23 Jan 2015 | 8:57 am
Despite adhering to an overused setup (two lovers cope with an unwanted pregnancy), Channel 4 comedy CATASTROPHE overcame its hoariness because, frankly, it was funny and well-performed by writer-stars Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney. They played, um, Sharon and Rob—middle-aged, transatlantic lovers who become expectant parents following a crazy week of passionate sex after meeting in a London bar.Horgan's loathe to stray from her comfort zone (there's scant difference between her roles in Pulling, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret and Dead Boss), while Twitter-star Delaney's a…
  • Trailer: Netflix's THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT

    Dan
    23 Jan 2015 | 2:30 am
It's the first trailer for Netflix's new sitcom THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT, created by Tina Fey (30 Rock). It concerns the eponymous woman (Ellie Kemper) who's rescued from a doomsday cult, after spending 15-years in an underground bunker. Adjusting to the modern world, Kimmy gets a job as a nanny for an Upper East Side socialite (Jane Krakowski), and laughs ensue.First impressions? I think this looks like a lot of fun, and I'm a big fan of Kemper (The Office, Bridesmaids), who just lights up the screen here. Maybe the jokes about Kimmy being several steps behind modern culture will get a…

This week law and order return as a speedster, an archer and a cowboy return to protect their territories. No, I’m not talking about a new twist on the venerable “Law & Order” franchise, I’m referring to a trio of popular series coming back from a short winter nap. First up, we go to Starling City where the city’s vigilante protector is missing. We all know that Oliver Queen/The Arrow (Stephen Amell) met an ignominious defeat at the sword of Ra’s Al Ghul (Matthew Nable) and seemingly fell to his death. Team Arrow is unaware of what transpired on the mountain top, but this week…

This week my eye is on the aftermath of tragedy, demons roaming the Earth, Wesen wandering around Portland and the rise of the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. This is what piques my interest on TV this week, with a brief honorable mention. Let’s get to it. Viewers and Team Machine have barely come to terms with the loss of a much-loved character last season when “Person of Interest” has thrown us another curveball and removed another piece from the board. After an ominous sequence ending in a black screen and ambiguous bang, it appears that Shaw (Sarah Shahi) has either been killed by evil…

Welcome back to Broadcast Views and the return of new TV episodes! Starting this week I’ll be giving you my picks for the week that are your best bets for superlative entertainment. MONDAY “Scorpion” returns with genius kid Ralph (Riley B. Smith) in the hot seat with the FBI after he inadvertently reveals the location of a CIA safe house. Walter (Elyes Gabel) and the team most assuredly have his back. This show just keeps getting better and better and is my pick of the night. You’ll also want to check out the return of “NCIS: Los Angeles.” While undercover, Callen (Chris…

    16 Dec 2014 | 6:00 am
As 2015 quickly approaches, so do a few new TV series. Mid season shows generally serve the purpose of filling out a Network’s schedule after other shows are either cancelled, put on hiatus or end their ordered run. Quite often they turn out to be hits and return for full runs the following season. Here are the new series that I think will catch on and stick around. ABC has a plan to keep you deeply enmeshed in the Marvel Universe when “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” go on break for the winter. Premiering January 6th, “Agent Carter” will show us the further adventures of Peggy…

As the year comes to a close, it is time to look back at the first part of the 2014 Fall TV Season. This year it seems that the Networks have been restrained on dropping the axe on low-performing series as there has been relatively few cancellations so far. As more and more people are choosing to watch shows on their own schedule, those concerned with ratings are looking at the long game as opposed to how many view the first broadcast of an episode. Having said all that, here is what caught my eye this Fall. As you may be tired of reading, I had developed a love/hate viewership with…

  • Birdman's searching for meaning, man

    18 Jan 2015 | 1:33 am
Spoilers ahead According to one psychological model, there’s basically four areas you need to work on to feel life is purposeful. So when it comes to finding meaning, there’s nothing riskier than betting all your fulfilment on just one of these areas. That’s what I think happens to Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), in the film, Birdman. #1 Social Support First up, you need your social environment to be supportive. In Birdman, Riggan relies on the support of his lawyer (Zach Galifianakis) who feigns encouragement to ensure they can continue to bring in money. He is…
  • Back to the Future 2 or why we usually get the future wrong

    9 Jan 2015 | 5:38 pm
Movies set in the future always seem to overestimate the progress of humankind. In 2001: A Space Odyssey, artificial intelligence controlled deep space exploration. In the original Star Trek series, they speak of the 'Eugenics War' that occurred in the 1990s. In Star Wars we have lightsabers and lightspeed. But that was set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...of course. In 2015, we are now entering the future predicted rather unsuccessfully in Back to the Future 2, which was released in 1989. What predictions were made and why do people have such a hard time predicting the future?
  • Do masks make villains scarier?

    19 Dec 2014 | 6:10 pm
If you want a villain with impact, try concealing their face. The face is the most personal thing about us. It portrays who we are, reveals our emotions, and helps others anticipate our behaviour. Filmmakers often use masks to conceal the faces of villains. Perhaps this unsettles us because we struggle to connect with them and find it difficult to identify signs of empathy or humanity. Often the mask is a subtle depiction of a human skull. Such imagery associated with death and has been shown to unsettle us at an unconscious level.Do masks make villains…
  • New Bond film hooks us in with nostalgia

    7 Dec 2014 | 2:01 am
The new James Bond film looks like it might be jumping back in time. It's called, Spectre, which was the criminal organisation from the early Connery films (remember the dude with the white cat?). So, why do new films end up going back in time to revisit old ideas?  Batman Begins took us back to Batman's origins. Star Trek (2009) introduced us to the early days of Captain Kirk. Superman recently returned to Krypton in the Man of Steel  and James Bond has saved the day in 24 films. If you prefer your Bond stirred not shaken, you might like to see…
  • Star Wars 7 trailer and its character archetypes

    30 Nov 2014 | 12:35 am
Although it be a bit premature, it's often easy to work out the character archetypes from a trailer. Archetypes are universal characters we see over and over again in stories (see my analysis of archetypes in Game of Thrones here). What universal characters can we expect from the new Star Wars based on the trailer that was launched on Friday? Here are some predictions. The Regular Guy: Guy in stormtrooper armour The Stormtroopers are the working class or 'regular guys' of the Star Wars universe so it wouldn't be surprising to see one thrown into a more complicated world like with…
