  • Top Chef spin-off gets new name, host; hit reality shows with black audiences ignored; NatGeo shake-up

    16 Apr 2014 | 7:26 am
Our semi-regular round-up of stories you may have missed: The top executives at National Geographic's U.S. channels, Howard T. Owens and David Lyle, are unexpectedly leaving. The channels' marketing executive, Courteney Monroe, takes over as CEO, and 21st Century Fox's David Hill becomes chair of the U.S. channels. The Hollywood Reporter's analysis says last year "ratings surged to 12-year highs" but "growth stalled, and no truly viable unscripted hit has been produced." (Uh, Brain Games?) But Deadline notes that the channels' high ratings following the executives' "makes the executive…

    15 Apr 2014 | 5:57 am
On Sunday, I discovered that I can no longer make it through an episode of Mad Men: it's well-acted and the production values are strong, but the pace and repetition of themes from earlier seasons leaves me incredibly bored. On Monday, I started binge-watching USA's Chrisley Knows Best and couldn't stop watching. I'm deeply ashamed. But let's talk about it. USA just renewed it for a second season, having finally found a reality show with strong ratings after failing with shows such as Summer Camp. I initially ignored Chrisley Knows Best because of the preview, which showed Todd Chrisley…

In addition, the show will edit out "you've got she-mail" lines from future episodes. The episode included "Female or She-Male" challenge, which was guest hosted by someone from Us Weekly, and RuPaul asked the drag queen contestants to identify whether someone is "a biological woman or a psychological woman." The network originally addressed the controversy but basically blew it off, saying in a statement last month, "We have…
  • Why the Amy's Baking Co. Kitchen Nightmares update was so embarrassing

    Andy Dehnart
    12 Apr 2014 | 9:21 am
As adapted by Fox and A. Smith & Co. Productions, Kitchen Nightmares went from a terrifically entertaining, dramatic UK series to a loud, dumbed-down, badly produced mess. Throughout its run, it's only gotten worse. But last year's fantastic finale episode, featuring Amy's Baking Company, was different. Sure, it had some of the eye-rolling bullshit we've come to expect from the Fox show, such as Ramsay feigning surprise that the restaurant was locked--even though he was being filmed by a camera that was actually inside the "locked" restaurant. But mostly, that episode had rich, real-life…

Two excellent but cancelled series are essentially returning to television, though on different networks and with slightly different formats. Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs-like series Somebody's Gotta Do It will air on CNN this fall, while Starz's first reality series will essentially be Project Greenlight, though The Chair has the twist of two different directors producing two different movies but using the same script. ABC’s scheduling stunt with a Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. block paid off. Airing at 9 PM with last week’s episode as a lead-in, the comic book series last night drew a 2.0 in adults 18-49, up 18% from its fast national last week and up 5% from the final to tie a five-week high. It is currently running behind CBS’ NCIS: LA (2.1) in the hour, but the ABC drama tends to get an upward adjustment in the finals, so it will likely end up in a tie or could even pull ahead. • REVIEW: In FX’s Fargo, the Devil Goes Up to Minnesota

    James Poniewozik
    14 Apr 2014 | 8:58 am
The best way to begin to describe what Fargo is to start with what it isn’t. The new FX series (premieres April 15) is not a remake of the 1996 Coen brothers movie–though the brothers are executive producers and the Minnesota settings and accents (uffda!) are largely the same. The core story involves a mild-mannered salesman who falls into a life of crime, though it’s not car salesman Jerry Lundegaard but insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman), and the crime is not the staged kidnapping of his wife but–ah, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The best way to…

The war of words between ABC News and The Center for Public Integrity is heating up. • Fargo TV Review

    Marc Eastman
    12 Apr 2014 | 10:07 pm
FX continues its effort to take over the world by putting out shows that, even if you hate them, are at least trying to do something amazing, with Fargo. Based on the work of, and produced by, Joel and Ethan Coen, the 10-episode series is only connected to the original film in the loosest possible sense. It takes place in Minnesota, police investigate foul deeds, and some really weird shit happens. There isn’t really a central character to the thing, though Martin Freeman‘s Lester Nygaard and Billy Bob Thornton‘s Lorne Malvo come closest to filling the role. Instead,…

If you’ve been listening to us for a while, you can probably predict where we landed on 300: Rise of an Empire with a fair degree of accuracy. You could probably even pinpoint the difference in our ratings without worry of going very far afield. While we didn’t love the first film, we didn’t hate it either, and it had some fun moments. This one didn’t live up to even that, and left us both pretty disappointed, although it had a few positives, despite the generally wild and crazy, special-effects-centric effort that it was. As you might guess, we spent a decent amount…

On July 18th, the sequel to Planes is hitting theaters, and Planes: Fire and Rescue already demonstrates a lot of Pixar‘s best qualities, and that’s just in the trailer. Not everyone loved the Cars sequel, and I have to admit that I’m more open to the Bond-esque genre than your average movie-goer, but I think you have to at least appreciate the effort to try to do something worthwhile with a sequel. Pixar could have just tooled around Radiator Springs, with just about any hokey plot their dart happened to hit, and slapped together another race to win. Instead, they tried to…
  • Dick Van Dyke Show – Classic Mary Tyler Moore Episodes DVD Review

    Marc Eastman
    12 Apr 2014 | 7:22 am
The idea of classic television “holding up over time” is something that eventually loses meaning, or at least has to be qualified. If you go back far enough, none of them really manage a serious appeal to young enough audiences, but some of them are nevertheless wonderfully watchable to any age, and any generation. The Dick Van Dyke Show is one such show, and that is largely the result of it really being so far ahead of its time. For all that it occasionally leans too far into the “zany” category (as an example, I Love Lucy, I think, does not actually survive beyond…

Two weeks ago, when I was discussing the Grosse Pointe Blank soundtrack, I mentioned that nostalgia is “a big card to play.” It’s a very evocative technique that, for a film or music, takes the viewer/listener back to another time, ushering them through their own lives, rather than taking them on a journey in a vacuum through the story. In both Grosse Pointe Blank and The Big Chill, the nostalgic music was largely diegetic, meaning the characters in the films can hear it. In the case of Grosse Pointe Blank, the nostalgic efforts aren’t directly pandering to the…

  • NCIS: Los Angeles Season 5 Review “Three Hearts”

    Samantha Kaye
    16 Apr 2014 | 10:21 am
Last week I mentioned that I don’t pay too much attention to the plots in NCIS: Los Angeles. This week’s Three Hearts was an exception. Anchored by a charismatic guest star, Daniel Henney, and focusing on Kensi and Deeks’ relationship, my only hope is that most standalone episodes of the series can be this engaging. […]

  • Bill Nighy returning in the Worricker trilogy on PBS this Fall

    Bill Young
    15 Apr 2014 | 10:03 pm
While there will be the inevitable comparison to the Cornetto Trilogy, the Worricker Trilogy may just have a minor leg up given the greatness of Bill Nighy and Christopher Walken. As we reported earlier this month, The Worricker Trilogy, which began with Page Eight, is set to continue with Bill Nighy reprising his role as MI5 spy Johnny Worricker in Turks & Caicos and Salting The Battlefield, the second and third installments of David Hare’s Emmy-winning spy trilogy. The initial installment, Page Eight, aired on BBC Two and on PBS in 2011 and starred Nighy, Rachel Weisz, Ralph Fiennes,…

Oh Geez! Just when you thought it was safe to go back to Fargo…     On the surface, even a remote passing thought of trying to translate Coen brothers big screen perfection to the small screen seems crazy. On paper, however, tonight’s premiere of Fargo on FX has all the makings of ‘Must-See-TV’. Written by Noah Hawley (Bones) and starring Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit), Billy Bob Thornton, Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad), Colin Hanks (Dexter, Good Guys), Key & Peele, and Oliver Platt (The Big C), Fargo, the biggest ‘Ah Ha’ moment, to quote…

Thinking this case will solidify his QC appointment, he lives up to his nickname in the ensuing trial but the consequences are more than chilling to say the least.     Created, produced and…

The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of false identities and true love has a brilliant history on stage. Over the years, the iconic role of Lady Bracknell has been played by what seems like a who’s who of British greatness as Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Penelope Keith have all uttered the immortal words of “A handbag?” on the stage. Beginning July 2015, Sir David Suchet will don Lady Bracknell’s heels for a London West End revival run of Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest to be directed by Adrian Noble, who was artistic…

  • The Veronica Mars movie was basically perfect

This review contains spoilers. If you haven’t watched the movie, don’t read. There’s a moment during the Veronica Mars movie when Veronica and Logan are driving across a bridge (pictured above) where I was sitting in the theater and just thought wow, this is a movie. The exterior shots of Southern California, Veronica’s smooth voiceover, the tracking shot of her riding shotgun. It has been close to seven years since the show was retired from television airwaves, and here it was on the big screen. Veronica Mars was 20 feet tall, right in front of me. So rare is the…

If you’re looking to satisfy your itch to see cars go vroom a lot on the big screen, then by all means run — don’t walk — to Need for Speed this weekend. The packed house I watched it in was having a mighty good time with the races, the crazy stunts, and the cheeky one-liners, as was I. But if you’re thinking Need for Speed elevates beyond that, then you might be let down. Which I was, especially since Aaron Paul’s latest project was the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad. A decade long journey comes to a head as Chastity Bites is finally released on DVD, and to celebrate the spectacularly spooky news, we have an in-depth look into the mind of the writer and producer of the film, Lotti Pharriss Knowles. This recently released horror-comedy puts a modern day spin on the historical tale surrounding Elizabeth Bathory, a devilish woman who bathed in the blood of virgins, believing that her murderous ways would help achieve eternal youth. How’s that pipe dream going for ya, Lizzy? Not so great, I would imagine. To the people who said that dedication is dead, you…

Via Splitsider: "The Script Pile" is a biweekly column on Splitsider that takes a look at the screenplays for high-profile movie and TV comedies that never made it to the screen. In 1996, a year ahead of Comedy Central picking up South Park, the show’s co-creator Trey Parker sold his first movie. Called Fuzzies, the script was written by a 24-year-old Parker, and it’s a hard-to-classify feature, different than anything Parker and partner-in-crime Matt Stone have made in the nearly two decades since. Fuzzies is a live-action movie about a mentally disabled 9-year-old boy defending…

“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” was such a silly series because the good guys didn’t figure out the extremely simple solution for their problems at the very beginning of the show. All Alice (Sophie Lowe) had to do was wish for Cyrus (Peter Gadiot) and Jafar (Naveen Andrews) to switch places. Anastasia (Emma Rigby) also could have tried it when she had three wishes. Jafar did eventually end up trapped in that genie bottle, and at least viewers got one good thing out of going on an unnecessarily lengthy journey: They got to meet Will Scarlet, a.k.a. The Knave of Hearts…

There is a common misconception that, to be a true fan of any particular sports team, you have to go to great lengths to prove it. Funny enough, these methods almost always prove that you are also a little crazy: standing out in the rain for hours on end, tailgating with cheap beer, and shelling out far too much money for tickets and merchandise. While this could be what it takes for some, the more sensible fans watching from home on game day may be just as obsessed. Though it may infuriate the most diehard (and now soggy) fans, we totally understand why watching sports on TV is the better…

When I think back on the films that I find myself quoting most often, Step Brothers always seems to find it’s way to the top.  I can’t help it.  The film itself is so ridiculous, but to deny how hilarious it is could be considered cinematic blasphemy.  I can’t even count the number of times I’ve shouted, “YOU DON’T SAY THAT!”, whenever somebody questions something I say.  The reason for this is the impeccable chemistry of actors Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, who seem like they genuinely enjoy working together.  So whenever I find out…

Even though Marvel’s X-Men franchise is pretty damn awesome, it’s been seriously lacking in terms of some of the cooler characters in the mutant universe.  Chief among them is Gambit, the Bayou-born thief with the power to charge objects with explosive energy at his very touch.  Usually, they’re in the form of playing cards and a staff, which he wields excellently.  He got a brief appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was portrayed by actor Taylor Kitsch.  He did a fine job, but the film was an awful embarrassment and a terrible entry-point to the…

• 10 Reasons Watching Sports on TV is Better Than Being at the Game

    John Dilley
    15 Apr 2014 | 10:38 am
There is a common misconception that, to be a true fan of any particular sports team, you have to go to great lengths to prove it. Funny enough, these methods almost always prove that you are also a little crazy: standing out in the rain for hours on end, tailgating with cheap beer, and shelling out far too much money for tickets and merchandise. While this could be what it takes for some, the more sensible fans watching from home on game day may be just as obsessed. Though it may infuriate the most diehard (and now soggy) fans, we totally understand why watching sports on TV is the better…

“Fionaaaaaa!” If there’s one thing I’ve discovered during this (probably the best) season of Shameless yet, one of the most significant running themes is that opportunities are fleeting for the Gallagher’s family and connections.  So many of these characters scramble to keep their grip on the little pieces of hope or stability that they find, and they either get fried or completely destroy themselves.  The problem is that constant sensation that everything has been falling apart, which has left me with some sinking feelings all season long.  Here are my…

I notice a pattern here There’s something about the way women swoon over gay relationships on television.  Shameless has drawn a great deal of romantic attention for Mickey and Ian’s tumultuous affair.  Whole Tumblrs are devoted to their moments together.  I cannot help but wonder why I, and so many other women, are drawn to what is objectively a damaged and abusive love-affair constructed from internalized homophobia and slowly loosening repression.  I have to wonder if observance of tortured gay relationships provides a means of satisfying a deeper desire for male…

puᴉɯ ɹnoʎ ǝǝɹɟ Cut Copy’s Free Your Mind is less of an album and more of an auditory sermon.  Some might think the overall uplifting message of the album is only mildly distinguishable from 70s drug odes inviting the withered masses to come get “higher.”  Their work reads, to me, more like a nondenominational religious journey.  Their shows feel like it, too.  This weekend, at Terminal 5, I joined the cult of Cut Copy. I’ve loved Cut Copy since 2011, discovering Zonoscope accidentally while listening to a Friendly Fires station on Pandora.  Seeing as…
  • Normcore is not a thing.

    27 Feb 2014 | 4:22 pm
Not quite the 90s, but close enough. Via RuthlessReviews Up until about a day ago, Normcore was only a whisper in the dark.  Sometime in October, a group of art people made some kind of mention of Normcore being the accessible appeal of the generic smiley face.  Now, NYMag has decided to call this non-thing a thing, the internet’s eating it up like cat-picture pudding, and I smell bull dookie.  I don’t think normcore is a thing, and here’s why. For starters, this non-trend has mainly locked on with “millennials,” or late twenty-early thirty-somethings. …

UPDATE: After 636 comments, we're moving this thread over here so you can read the new comments as people get working DNS codes: http://www.netflixfixer.com/2014/02/american-netflix-dns-codes-roundup-pt2.html (current code over there is 88.80.186.67, 162.243.65.31 but we won't be updating both threads as comments come in).DNS codes to connect to American Netflix from outside the US (for things like troops serving in the US military) changed multiple times over the past few months, but here are updated ones. • Superbowl Stream Info for Cordcutters

    Daniel Repasky
    2 Feb 2014 | 2:50 pm
I've long believed that the best way to combat those spam sites that illegally stream big games/fights online, is to stream it yourself legally with your own ads. Well it looks like Fox finally got the clue, and is streaming the Superbowl free online - and we all know the ads will be entertaining. So don't go to the illegal streams, show Fox that cordcutters will support the first legally streamed Superbowl:http://msn.foxsports.com/foxsportsgo/They also have iPad apps and such, just search "Fox Sports Go".If you'd like to watch from overseas, you may be able to use the tools in How to Get…

  • Netflix Announce Hemlock Grove Season 2 Release Date

    16 Apr 2014 | 7:12 am
The supernatural drama from Eli Roth will return to Netflix with a brand new season on July 11, all ten hour long episodes will be available for streaming offering fans a dizzying mix of gruesome horror and compelling characters. This second run is slightly shorter than the 13 episodes produced for the first season but that doesn’t appear to have made executive producer Eli Roth’s plans for the series any less ambitious.

The Best Air Dates And Movie Release Dates Tracking Site! Welcome to Air Dates! I’m a huge fan of the 7th art. I spend most of my time watching tv shows and movies, but not just for fun. I believe filming has a philosophy that can impact human mind as well as other arts or social sciences. I approach all movies on this basis. Every director has a philosophy or bases his filming experience on a story that leads us to think every aspect of it emotionally and rationally. Cinema is an art where imagination gets involved, maybe even more valuable than the other arts in our contemporary…

  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 2 – The Lion and the Rose

    Harriet Matthews
    14 Apr 2014 | 12:52 pm
Another day in Westeros, another wedding to attend. Hotly anticipated by readers of the books, the Purple Wedding is the first truly major event of season four, and as such author George R. R. Martin was drafted in by showrunners D B. Weiss and David Benioff to help with scripting the episode (Martin has previously put on his screenwriting hat for The Pointy End in season one, Blackwater in season two, and The Bear and the Maiden Fair in season three). In the past, Martin’s involvement has tended to come much later in the season, so the fact that he’s pitched in on episode two…
  • My Mad Fat Diary Season 2: Episode 6

    Kirsty Everiss
    9 Apr 2014 | 3:02 am
We are nearing the end of season 2 of My Mad Fat Diary. Episode 6 is the penultimate episode, and really a look back at events from seasons 1 and 2 seen through the eyes of Chloe. Rae is involved in the show for the Performing Arts course, and Chloe was the lead singer in her group but she hasn’t been coming to rehearsals. Rae decides to go to Chloe’s house and finds out from Chloe’s parents that she has gone missing. Her parents don’t seem concerned, as Chloe seems to do disappearing acts all the time. Rae says she needs the posters Chloe has for the show, and then looks for…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 1 – Two Swords

    Harriet Matthews
    7 Apr 2014 | 2:10 pm
Oh yes, it’s that time of year again. Spring flowers are in full bloom, April showers are sprinkling onto our waiting umbrellas, it’s almost time for the Easter Bunny to leave some chocolate fertility symbols hidden in the bird bath, and Game of Thrones is back. Your Mondays are no longer yours; now, they belong to the realm. A lot of stuff went down in season three; so much in fact, that you may be wondering if there are enough characters left alive to warrant you sticking with this careering warhorse of a show until the bitter and bloody end. The Starks, or at least most of them, may be…
  • Fargo featurette looks at differences from film

    Harriet Matthews
    2 Apr 2014 | 3:04 am
Are you ready to see a whole lot more blood splattered over a whole lot more snow? No, we’re not talking about Game of Thrones (although we will be pretty soon, with the new series starting next week). We’re talking about Fargo, FX’s small screen adaptation of the Coen Brothers movie of the same name. The series stars Martin Freeman, Billy Bob Thornton, and Allison Tolman, and will feature 10 episodes of one hour each. A new two minute featurette offers a peek behind the scenes of the upcoming series, and also takes a quick look at the main differences between the series…
  • My Mad Fat Diary Season 2: Episode 5

    Kirsty Everiss
    28 Mar 2014 | 8:28 am
This week, Rae finds herself realising she isn’t as grown up as her friends. It seems this episode has moved on by a few weeks and some of the gang have had changes in their lives. Finn is dating an older woman who is 24 (he is about 18). Chloe is hanging out with an older group of lads. Archie is getting teased for being gay by people he considered friends. Rae and Liam are just friends, although he has split up with his girlfriend Amy after the incidents of the previous episode. Rae is seen smoking a spliff by her step-dad Kareem, and when she goes back home her Mum puts her foot down…
