It’s not uncommon for writers to get fired off of film projects. You turn in a draft, the phone stops ringing, and then you learn that someone else has been hired to rewrite you. Larry Gelbart, at a WGA membership meeting debating one of our many contracts, spoke to the crowd of about a thousand and said, “At one time everyone in this room will rewrite everyone else in this room”.  He's right.  But how many writers have been fired even before they wrote a single word? Not many. The only two I can think of are me and my partner, David Isaacs.  What a dubious…

Meet Thom Payne (Steve Coogan). He’s just turned 44. He feels old. He has a wife, Lee (Kathryn Hahn), and a kid, Julius (Sawyer Shipman), and a suburban house and the pressure of keeping them all afloat. He hates his job, and he fears for it. He wonders if this is all there is. He– Oh, you’ve already met? Sure; you’ve met one version of him or another–middle-aged, ennui-ridden, losing a step to the advancing hordes of The Youngs–in numerous cable dramas and comedies and dramedies. Sometimes he sells crystal meth, sometimes he does standup. In…
  • The Americans Watch: The Evil Empire Strikes Home

    22 Apr 2015 | 8:15 pm
Given the title of The Americans’ season three finale, “March 8, 1983,” it was not a spoiler to anyone with Google that the episode would involve Ronald Reagan’s famous “Evil Empire” speech about the Soviet Union. That this series would use that signal moment in the Cold War isn’t surprising. How it used the speech was more so. Reagan’s speech was not only a saber-rattling declaration. It was an ethical argument that his audience must choose a side–it cast the Cold War as a moral battle not just between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. but one…

If the folks at Netflix watch Netflix, last December they might have seen a chilling episode of the British sci-fi series Black Mirror, titled “Be Right Back,” a kind of high-tech version of the short story “The Monkey’s Paw.” After her significant other is killed in an accident, a young woman hears about a tech startup that promises to bring him back–an artificially intelligent simulacrum, anyway–first as a smartphone app, then as a clone. The imitation is perfect, practically perfect, almost perfect–so tantalizingly close to perfect that…
  • Review: Inside Amy Schumer Makes the Personal Parodic

    James Poniewozik
    21 Apr 2015 | 6:00 am
I could tell you exactly how funny the season 3 premiere of Inside Amy Schumer is (Tues., April 21), but then I’d have to kill it. Explanations are deadly to comedy, not to mention giving away punchlines. And while Schumer’s already released the opening sketch–“Milk Milk Lemonade,” a parody of booty videos guest starring Amber Rose–the episode’s other highlights depend so much on surprise, twists and casting that if I told you–well, then you’d have to kill me. I will say, though, that the episode’s title is “Last F—able…

  • CNN’s Anderson Cooper Responds to Baltimore Official Who Criticized News Media

CNN’s Anderson Cooper questioned comments made by a Baltimore City Council president Bernard Young, who spoke Monday at a city news conference on the rioting that has overwhelmed the city. Cooper said Young had been critical of the media for “focusing on the negative.” Responding directly to Young during “AC 360,” Cooper said \"I’m not sure what he thinks cameras should be focused on at a time when police cars are being destroyed, lit on fire, 15 police officers are being injured and stores being looted. I’m not sure exactly sure what images he would like us…

Another night of rioting in Baltimore is creating dramatic images of burning businesses and clashes between rioters and police, with rolling coverage on the cable news networks. The chaos, all stemming from the April 19th death of Freddie Gray, led all three network evening newscasts Monday. ABC’s “World News Tonight” with David Muir branded the story “Baltimore Erupts: City on Edge.” The “CBS Evening News” with Scott Pelley called the story simply “violent protests,” and “NBC Nightly News” with Lester Holt opted for…

Don Imus is leaving the TV airwaves once again. FBN confirmed the news tonight following Imus’s rather understated announcement this morning: “We go off television May 29. Why? I do not know. There’s 10 times, maybe a hundred times more people that listen to the radio than watch television. That’s the mentality of… whatever,” said Imus before changing the subject. A network executive with knowledge of the decision said the plan had been in the works since January when Imus informed FNC Chairman & CEO Roger Ailes that he was moving to Texas. Both sides…

  • Long-Form Digital Viewing Goes Mainstream, Yahoo Says

    Daisy Whitney
    27 Apr 2015 | 3:14 pm
Long-form video viewing on digital devices has achieved ubiquity, says Lauren Weinberg, VP Strategic Research & Insights at Yahoo, in this interview with Beet.TV. More than 90% of consumers in all age groups from 13 to 54 now watch long-form video on digital devices, according to a study of online consumers conducted in the fall by search giant Yahoo. For many teens and millenials,  watching TV and movies on digital screens is quickly replacing viewing them on the TV, the study found. The size of the screen plays a role, Weinberg tells us. Nearly half of consumers watch long-form…
  • Video Journalists are Finally “Journalists,” The New York Times’ Bruce Headlam says

    Andy Plesser

Not that long ago, video journalists were sort of appendages to print reporters, expanding and amplifying print stories.   That role has evolve to where video journalists are now journalists, says Bruce Headlam, Managing Editor for Video at The New York Times, in this interview with Beet.TV To demonstrate the new enterprising role of video journalism, Headlam points to The Times Pulitzer-winning coverage for the ebola crisis in West Africa. Headlam joined Times video desk last year after serving as media editor. We spoke with him today at the New York Times NewFront.

It’s taken some time to convince them, but advertisers are now on-board and enthusiastic for the various ways “programmatic” ad-buying can help them better target and automate their messages. Havas Media channel investments EVP Melissa Keller says her agency has gone from “seeding” experiments with clients last year, to implementing full-on “roadmaps” this year, in an interview with Beet.TV about the future of TV advertising. And multi-platform advertising sales software firm Invision’s CEO Steve Marshall agrees: Two years ago, we were reaching…

Slowly but surely, television is opening up to the “programmatic” ad sales revolution that has happened in online display and video. What are some of the biggest inhibitors? One factor is lack of a common, open format for audience targeting data, says Havas Media channel investments EVP Melissa Keller. In an interview with Beet.TV, she targets “getting standardization of the metrics we’re looking at and going beyond one (provider’s) ecosystem. “They’re only optimizing within their set. This one made me a bit nervous, despite how much I liked it, both because TV Land is expanding original content and probably can’t keep everything, and because Sutton Foster might be cursed. That could just be me. You know, those like Basil and Sybil Fawlty who are constantly at each others throats but you get the sense that neither of them would survive without the other. The same could be said (maybe) for Tim and Gareth (more on this later) in the BBC version of The Office, Hyacinth and Richard in Keeping Up Appearances and, now, Andy and Lance, two ‘detectorists’ (practitioners of the detector) who bicker constantly and re-tell the same…

Ever wondered what ‘the Broadchurch effect’ is? Well, if you are thinking of buying DI Alec Hardy’s quaint little riverside  property in West Bay, Dorset, which was the setting for Broadchurch, it’s approximately £50,000. While the unassuming and picturesque little blue chalet may scream tranquil and serene on the outside, inside it has already been the scene of some fairly dark moments in the second series of Broadchurch. There was the scene in which David Tennant’s detective first read the NHS letter about his heart condition, the subsequent break-in when the…

  • Castle Recap: Sneaks on a Plane

    Matt Webb Mitovich
    27 Apr 2015 | 8:24 pm
First, some disclosure: I love pretty much any thriller set on a plane. Passenger 57, Flightplan, Airport, Executive Decision, Air Force One… Die Hard 2, by extension. So for that reason, but also others, I kinda loved this hour of Castle, and felt it was easily the best episode since 3XK’s return. For one, the […]

Dancing With the Stars pulled a fast one on us in a number of ways this Monday night. Then, in a results shocker that was, perhaps, not entirely unfair but certainly unexpected, […]

Based on the hardline policy known as “self-deportation,” Alabama’s HB-56 aimed to make life so miserable for illegal immigrants that they’d opt to leave the state on their own. The law granted police unprecedented powers to arrest, question […]

  • Mad Men: 7 wishes for the final 7 episodes

    5 Apr 2015 | 4:22 pm
Not much more can be added to the torrent of stories written about Mad Men's final installment of seven episodes (the first of these airs tonight at 10/9c on AMC). For that reason, I'll simply add my own personal wish list of things that I'd like to see as the so called "End of an Era" kicks off. For Peggy Olson, a balancing act We've seen Peggy's storyline emerge over the past several seasons as one in which she's achieving great professional success while her personal life is often in shambles (not an unfamiliar dynamic for many characters on this show). • Supernatural Rewind: the Winchesters reel in a "Hook Man"

    26 Sep 2014 | 9:40 pm
"Hook Man" (Supernatural S0107) cold opens out of the clichéd (but fun) scary camp fire story that everyone has heard a million times. A dude takes his gal out into the middle of the woods to "neck" (if we're talking super old school parlance) or their car breaks down or some such. Then, one of a few things happens. Either the couple here's on the car radio that a bunch of psychopaths have broken out of the local mental hospital (this might be one of my favorites, and may well have been used in the classic film, Stand By Me). One of my best pals and I took a five-week sojourn across this great nation, slicing across monstrous miles and trekking along the groaning highway (hat tip to Mr. Jack Kerouac there, in one of my all time favorite phrases of his from On the Road) through the south, stopping wherever whim and friends and family took us along the way, modest tastes (Denny's was our friend in many…

Quick Take: Below Deck, "She'd Better Not Be Saying" "Serving Adriennemakes me want to vomit in her face." – Kat Review: Below Deck, "She'd Better Not Be Saying" With most (okay, most) reality shows, you're always trying to contend with how many situations are contrived and to what extent the producers have manipulated situations to drive the drama or intended narrative. In the case of Adrienne's return, it doesn't matter in the slightest as it's pure ludicrous joy to see her back and causing havoc amongst her old co-workers. After drinking it up with boat guests and friends (and…

Some say music takes them back, but I say TV is an even better time machine. I think syndication is better than the premiere of a new show that’s predicted to change the face of TV forever. Syndication rules because when an old favorite shows up on the channel guide, it’s like a visit from a long, lost childhood friend who you never want to leave. There are so many great shows that keep popping up in marathons that it seemed time to celebrate these gems. Jonathan Deesing
    22 Apr 2015 | 9:38 am
I was cautiously excited for FOX’s new series “The Last Man on Earth,” starring Will Forte as Phil Miller. I’m a sucker for anything post-apocalypse and I’ve enjoyed just about everything Forte has starred in. But after binge watching the first ten episodes on Hulu, I was more than disappointed. It’s not that the show lacks humor – in fact many of the gags are sort of enjoyable. The problem with “Last Man” is that in ten episodes the show has only told one joke, and it’s just not very funny. More than anything, the show is a huge waste of talent and a potentially…

  • The Power of Loss Made Last Night’s Mad Men Such A Classic Episode

    Chris King
    27 Apr 2015 | 12:54 pm
Mad Men very rarely produces a bad episode of television; however, the first three hours of the show’s final season (or, technically speaking, half season) had been somewhat of a letdown. They were not “bad” episode of Mad Men exactly, but they lacked a sense of energy and urgency, something that many had expected from the series as it comes closer and closer to wrapping up its seven-season run. Thankfully, that missing energy was found in last night’s episode of Mad Men, “Time & Life,” which was not only the best episode so far in this final stretch…

UK sci-fi fans rejoice, for Amazon has confirmed that it will be the exclusive streaming partner of CBS for the second season of sci-fi soap, Extant.  The second series of the Halle Berry-helmed sci-fi show will touch down in the UK on July 2, just hours after the CBS broadcast in the States. Berry will reprise her role as Molly Woods, an astronaut who returns from a 13-month solo mission in space only to discover she’s pregnant, despite believing herself to be infertile.  The second season will feature a drastically overhauled cast and will see Molly (Berry) come to the grim realisation…

  • 5 People We’d Love To See on Zachary Levi’s “Geeks Who Drink”

    Valerie David
    27 Apr 2015 | 10:13 am
Zachary Levi, beloved “Chuck” and “Heroes Reborn” star, is set to host a new game show called “Geeks Who Drink.” Based on a popular pub game of the same name, the show will challenge two teams of geeks on their mad trivia skills. Celebrity guests will mingle with ordinary geekdom, creating the opportunity for total mayhem, competitive humiliation, and hopefully some big laughs. Levi first took “Geeks Who Drink” on with his production company, The Nerd Machine. Once SyFy greenlit the show, the execs suggested Levi host it himself. The…

If you’re ready to travel back to yesteryear and catch up with some old friends, take a look at my five favorite throwback shows. 1.
  • “Last Man on Earth” – More Omega Bland Than Omega Man

When people think of online streaming TV, they usually think of Netflix and Hulu, but there’s another guy in town. Sony’s Crackle offers a similar, ever-improving service for free. The ad-based network, home of Jerry Seinfeld’s hit web series, “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee,” continues to expand from B-movies and vintage TV shows into original programming. With big names like Dennis Quaid signing on for new shows, Crackle could become another destination for fans to gobble up quality TV. I had to stop for a while.  As much as I love this blog and love talking about television, the job that gives me the money to pay for this little blog is usurping most of my time.  Teaching is time-consuming, exhausting, and soul-crushing, but also inspiring and liberating.  I’m lucky to like what I do, I’m just not lucky enough to have time for the other things I want to do. I’m still watching TV.  Though I had to abandon some shows and relegate others to the sidelines, I still caught a solid bit of what’s been happening the last few months.  If you read my…

Even though they were just building up the first few songs they had created, something in the room felt bigger than all of us. Nox Cult is an in-your-face musical explosion, with all the rage of young punks and all the skills of old pros. Nox Cult is creating a monster bigger than itself. Definitely not on my mother’s side-or at least not on Kat–our beloved blogmistress’ side of the family. She and her siblings all managed to finish college, get proper jobs, and live in homes that didn’t have some form of sheetrock dangling in the background. Our side? Not so much. • The Avengers: Age of Ultron Review

    27 Apr 2015 | 9:18 am
The list of blockbuster-movie sequels that don’t leave more to be desired are few and far between, The Avengers: Age of Ultron manages to not only break that mold, but it also does an impeccable job of pulling off what other big-budget action films only wish they could. For years the names of once revered franchises have been battered by poor sequels such as Spiderman 3, Superman III or the delightful romp through Japanese history that is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3 (starting to see a pattern here).

  • OUTLANDER, 1.12 – 'Lallybroch'

    Dan
    26 Apr 2015 | 10:15 am
We're in a very different place now, literally and figuratively. Jamie (Sam Heughan) knows his wife's a time-traveller, and is awed by her stories of airplanes and, well, seeing an elephant in the flesh, and Claire's (Caitriona Balfe) been taken to her new spouse's ancestral home at Lallybroch. Having chosen 17th-century Scotland over her own place and time, this was an hour of 'meet the family' drama, but not as overwrought and predictable as that implies. Indeed, sassenach Claire's arrival was met with frostiness by her husband's pregnant Jenny (Laura Donnelly), but this episode mostly…

This week, series 2's penultimate Inside No.9 paid homage to farcical one-act plays, and in particular the trope of an important birthday going awry thanks to invited guests clashing spectacularly. It's Nana's (Elsie Kelly) 79th birthday, and her daughter Angela (Claire Skinner) and son-in-law Jim (Steve Pemberton) are putting on a delicious spread in their immaculate suburban home, where Angela's alcoholic sister Carol (Lorraine Ashbourne) and her practical joker husband Pat (Reece Shearsmith) are also in attendance. What could possibly go wrong?"Nana's Party" was another great instalment,…

Warning: mild spoilers ahead, but certainly nothing too ruinous if you've yet to watch this film...If the box-office supremacy of The Avengers can be partly attributed to the simple mathematics of four established superheroes appearing in the same film, with lashings of tongue-in-cheek humour and more digital bedlam than the team's previous solo outings combined, highly-anticipated follow-up Avengers: Age of Ultron has a far tougher job on its hands. If the original succeeded with fresh spectacle and its then-unprecedented super-team dynamics (the welcome culmination of a triumphant "Phase…

The best episode of season 7.1 thus far (certainly a huge improvement on "New Business from last week), and mainly because it suggests the ultimate direction Don Draper's (Jon Hamm) headed come the finale, as his world changes around him. And it also featured the welcome return of some favourite young characters...Firstly, it marked out first look at Sally Draper (Kiernan Shipka) in what seems like a very long time, and as she gets older she's realising how the world sees her parents, and deciding she wants to be viewed differently—if that's even possible; nature vs. nurture, etc.

Marvel’s “Agents of SHIELD” television series is unique in that it is a spinoff of an ongoing feature film franchise, both containing narratives that occasionally cross paths. For example, the TV show featured a cleaning up of the aftermath of “Thor: Dark World.” More significantly, the events of the film “Captain America: Winter Soldier” irrevocably altered the landscape of its televised sibling as the titular agency fell to the evil Hydra. With the premiere of “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on Friday, will stories collide once again? The previous crossover left the team…

This time I’m shaking that up a little bit as I take a look back on a series that has just ended. TV shows are cancelled all the time, but it is not very often that they get choose the time of their ending, much less go out on a high note. “Justified” has clocked its last hour, but provided perhaps one the finest, most satisfying final episodes of all-time. Based on the short story “Fire in the Hole” by the late, great Elmore Leonard, “Justified” set itself apart…

Marvel Studios is the undisputed king of super-hero films, with its inter-connected Cinematic Universe about to release an eleventh film and many more planned out through 2019. The ambitious grand plan of Kevin Feige and company that began in 2008 has brought a full range of avenging characters to the silver screen. The studios attempt to bring that same successful model to TV has met with somewhat less success and a much shakier start. That has just changed thanks to Netflix. Current Marvel shows “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “Agent Carter” have had mediocre ratings and mixed reviews…

Once upon a time a television series would air a certain number of episodes and eventually ride off into the sunset or get summarily cancelled. Sometimes, but very rarely, a show might retain enough of a following that there could be a reunion TV movie or a feature film either illuminating unanswered questions from the original run or, more commonly, just showing some old favorites in a new light. Excepting in the case of reboots, the original series new returned in any sort of ongoing basis. Jack Bauer changed all that. The success of “24: Live Another Day” proved to the world, or at…

A long time ago in a country far, far away...except if you lived in Austria...Freud was infamous for explaining the sexual and unconscious causes for most of our neuroses. Many of these unconscious thoughts are realised through symbolism in dreams and culture. In particular, Freud saw phallic symbolism in much of our society from towers, swords, sticks…

We can also use more than one style depending on the circumstances.  The Coach Coaches build teams, making use of their strengths and working on developing their weaknesses, such as when Ned Stark arranges for his daughter, Arya Stark, to have the swordplay lessons she requires. Top adopters of the coaching style: Ned Stark, Rob…

After two decades of prequels, spin-off and reboots, the sequel has returned, risen, and, er, rebooted? Sequels play off the good memories we have of their predecessors. When we watch a sequel, we're basically expecting to relive a cherished experience. Like sequels, prequels try to construct a world only inferred by their predecessor films. However, often the plot isn't all that interesting because we already know how the story ends. This is partly why the prequels of late have failed to hit the mark. Reboots or remakes try to start a series again but always face backlash…

    Caleb Masters
    27 Apr 2015 | 6:59 pm
High Sparrow was the most eventful Game of Thrones episode so far this season and The Cast Beyond the Wall is back to break down some of its biggest twists. This week’s instalment brought us one of Jon Snow’s most defining moments yet, as he laid Janos Slynt’s head on the chopping block. His first act as Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch was undoubtably one of his boldest moves of the entire series, and we dive right into it and ask is Jon laying down the law, or planting the seeds of betrayal among his men? The north was chocked full of shocking twists as well, but…

Not much has been revealed about the show thus far, apart from a possible roster, but that may be about to change. According to Season-Zero, production on the pilot episode is set to begin in Toronto this…

Bringing together the likes of Daya, Alex, Piper, Red and Crazy Eyes for the on-the-nose poster, the artwork is as much about the characters’ bleak hope of redemption as it is their religious beliefs, who are no strangers to drama within the walls of Litchfield Penitentiary. Eagle-eyed fans will be able to spot a number of plot points hidden amongst the finer details of the still, including references…
