For an episode that had a lot of interpersonal conflict, a surprising blindside, and Jeff Probst yelling so loud he almost lost his voice (almost!), Survivor Worlds Apart was oddly sedate. • Friday Questions that spilled over into Thursday

    Ken Levine
    5 Mar 2015 | 6:00 am
With your questions continuing to pile up, I thought I’d sneak in another extra day. John is first up: We are starting to see the networks ordering pilots. It's always surprising to see them continuing to go to the same writer-producers who created this and last seasons' flops. What does that signify? An unwillingness to take a chance on new voices? Or is it a recognition that some of

I was watching a documentary on old time television and several people made reference to 77 SUNSET STRIP. This was a detective show in the ‘50s, known more for style over substance. But it had a very distinctive theme song. And when anybody brought up the show in any context the first thing they did was sing the logo and snap their fingers. It had become that ingrained in their psyches. If

It never got Emmy recognition. In the Golden Age of TV Comedy in the ‘70s, it was always considered second tier behind ALL IN THE FAMILY, THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW, and MASH. It’s from Bill Jones (who did not pay me to answer it): I was wondering if you could talk frankly about "payola" in the radio industry. • ‘DIG’ Review: USA Network Event Series Not Very Deep, Says Dominic Patten

    Dominic Patten
    5 Mar 2015 | 12:42 pm
Debuting at 10 tonight on USA Network, the 10-episode series created by Gideon Raff and Tim Kring stays pretty shallow despite its international, geopolitical and historical reach and aspirations. Even with its attempts to dig into the mysteries and revelations deep beneath Jerusalem and the potentially world-ending plans of Christian and Jewish extremists, DIG is, as my video review above says, really just a plodding procedural dressed up in solemn garb. The event series…

USA network has been selling its ten-part series Dig with its pedigree: “From the executive producers of Homeland and Heroes” (respectively, Gideon Raff and Tim Kring). This is indisputably true, but the Bible-flavored conspiracy thriller (premieres March 5) did not get the best DNA of either parent. From Homeland, it inherits a setting in an exoticized Middle East and a tale built around an investigator whose work is complicated by questionable personal choices that waylay the story. From Heroes, it borrows a globe-trotting network of characters whose story will reveal how…
  • Review: American Crime Is a Mystery With Meaning

    James Poniewozik
    4 Mar 2015 | 6:00 am
American Crime is, like a lot of TV drama lately–Secrets and Lies, Broadchurch, The Killing–built around a murder. Someone has been killed, suspects have been apprehended, no one is sure yet what went down and why. But while the first four episodes of the series (premieres March 5 on ABC) are gripping, and each introduces new complexity to a sweeping story, I would not call it a murder mystery. And that’s precisely why it works. What we know at the beginning of the pilot, written by John Ridley (screenwriter of Twelve Years a Slave), is that a young military veteran in…

    3 Mar 2015 | 6:00 am
When they prepare the In Memoriam reel for the next Emmy Awards, let’s hope the academy sets aside some space for NBC’s Thursday comedy block, God rest its soul. It was born in 1981, when the network aired the first in a set of comedy lineups that would include Cheers, The Cosby Show, Seinfeld, Friends, The Office, and many more legends. It died of old age and neglect on Jan. 22, 2015, with the little-noticed expirations of Bad Judge and A to Z. (Parks and Recreation outlived its cohort slightly, exiled to Tuesday.) It is survived by the night’s current occupants, espionage…
  • He Was the Cosmos: How Leonard Nimoy Made Spock a Mystical Force

    James Poniewozik
    27 Feb 2015 | 11:01 am
As an acting challenge, Mr. Spock was—to borrow an adjective from the Enterprise’s science officer himself—a curious one: a central figure in a drama whose chief characteristic was not showing emotion. And yet he became the character that Star Trek‘s audience loved most of all. That owes much to his creator, Gene Roddeberry, of course, but also to Leonard Nimoy, who died Feb. 27 at age 83, who invested into Spock every ounce of his own humanity. Though Spock was the embodiment of logic—the counterweight to swaggery Capt. Kirk and hotheaded Bones McCoy—Nimoy…
  • Review: The Last Man on Earth Is One of a Kind

    27 Feb 2015 | 6:00 am
This article contains spoilers. Click here to reveal them. Last year, when Fox released a trailer for Will Forte’s comedy The Last Man on Earth–which is about exactly what it says–I wasn’t sure how that premise could hold down a TV series, but I wanted to see more. Having seen the double-length March 1 premiere and one episode after that, I’m still not sure how the premise can sustain a series. And I still want to see more, so consider me sold. It’s 2020. Everybody is dead from a virus. Everybody, that is, except Phil Miller (Forte), who for two years has…

  • Dana Perino Recalls Facing ‘Equal Opportunity’ Ed Henry

    Mark Joyella
    5 Mar 2015 | 12:32 pm
They’re all smiles now, but years ago, Dana Perino was the White House press secretary, and Ed Henry was covering the Bush Administration for CNN. It’s a relationship that can be, at times, testy. Today on Fox News, Henry and Perino reflected on those adversarial days–and one particular comment Perino made at the time. “She called me an equal opportunity blank–I won’t use the word, I think it starts with an ‘a’, and it’s not a very nice word,” Henry told FNC’s Gretchen Carlson. Henry has told the story before, once–in a…

These days, many ad tech vendors offer to give brands and networks the data that reveals the true effectiveness of their ads. But which side wants to see that data, and which would rather look away? “If a big ad network doesn’t like what they see…  they don’t necessarily want to come back (to us),” according to Veenome CEO Kevin Lenane, whose company collects attributes video content to helps advertisers and use it for contextual targeting, auditing for exchanges and more. Native ads can often generate more attention then display ads, and they also usually drive a positive brand association, says Lauren Weinberg, VP Strategic Research & Insights at Yahoo, in this interview with Beet.TV. According to Yahoo’s research, 60% of consumers have a positive perception of native ads, and they generate three times the attention of standard display ads. Weinberg said that Yahoo has found three elements to be critical for successful native ads. The first is an effective integration of content and platform,  the second is transparency to the consumers…

  • Little Boy Trailer – Do You Believe You Can Do This?

    Marc Eastman
    5 Mar 2015 | 10:23 am
On April 24th, sappy, beautiful goodness is going to see if it can’t push through, and get your heart to grow three sizes in something like 90 minutes. Little Boy, an inventive yarn in the grand tradition of just generally wild and impossible yarns, tells the story of a boy who just wants his father to come home from World War II, and really, really believes he can bring him back himself. With an amazing cast, including: Emily Watson, Michael Rappaport, Tom Wilkinson, Jakob Salvati, and Ben Chaplin, and direction by Alejandro Monteverde (the fantastic, and woefully under-appreciated…
  • CSI: Cyber Review – TV CBS

    5 Mar 2015 | 8:17 am
CSI: Cyber has much in common with its acronym-titled brethren, which is likely to be equally good and bad if you’re trying to guess how well it will play to audiences. The inclusion of the word “Cyber,” and James Van Der Beek, among other elements, means we’re aiming for a slightly younger demographic than your average crime drama with such a title, but the show also has to appease those who are desperate for any new acronym to round out their schedule. Thus, the obvious hackers and cyber-crime, but you have to keep it so that everything “cyber” is pretty…
  • American Crime Review – TV ABC – Racial Tension Drama Sidesteps Overblown Theatrics

    4 Mar 2015 | 4:08 pm
The fact that John Ridley, of 12 Years a Slave, created and executive produces American Crime is probably, oddly, too informative for the show’s own good. If you know the film, you are correct about your estimation of what you’re going to get from the show, generally speaking, except insofar as the scope of the subjects up for analysis. This could be a turn off for some viewers, just based on the “everything can’t happen to this one set of people,” theory of non-watchability. If you don’t know the film, you probably aren’t any more moved to see the…

TV Land is about to continue its own trend of reinventing television, but this time it isn’t with another throwback to another era’s sit-com (though those are almost all good shows as well). No, this time, Sex and the City’s Darren Star is using the novel of the same name as a jumping off point, and putting together an impressive cast, for something a little different. If pure potential is any guide, this one should be the next big thing. With Sutton Foster getting another shot after the somewhat premature departure of Bunheads, and Hilary Duff and Debi Mazar in key roles,…
  • Battle Creek Review – TV CBS

    Marc Eastman
    4 Mar 2015 | 9:35 am
One of the hurdles of television is that no matter how solid a show you might envision as a general idea, you’ve still got to create a pilot. Balancing the establishment of the overall scenario, while still putting out something entertaining in itself is a trick that has killed off scores of shows that could have been great. Battle Creek is an almost perfect example of how to get the job done. That doesn’t automatically mean that the show is great, or that we need another cop show, or that the recent appearance of The Odd Couple isn’t curious, but the show nails the pilot.

  • Post Downton Abbey, Sesame Street spoofs ‘House of Cards’

    Bill Young
    26 Feb 2015 | 10:03 pm
For a bit of a different take on the classic Three Little Pigs story, Sesame Street had to look no further than the  House of Cards for their next parody target. The American version with Kevin Spacey, not the brilliant BBC series with Ian Richardson. Given the British focus of Tellyspotting, I find myself a bit biased and think that the Netflix version is a parody of the BBC one, so it seems only appropriate that Sesame Street leave the original BBC series alone and go right for the American re-make jugular. After an earlier spoof of Downton Abbey, the PBS children’s series proved…

Fresh off the successes of The Great British Bake Off, The Big Allotment Challenge and The Great British Sewing Bee comes The Big Painting Challenge. With the expressed aim to get us off the sofa and into something creative, The Big Painting Challenge premiered last night on BBC 1. Co-hosting was none other than Una Stubbs, probably known more for her brilliant efforts as Mrs. Hudson on Sherlock than she is with a paint brush. That said, it was one of her first efforts last year of her Sherlock co-stars that piqued her interest in painting.  It was her watercolor paintings of…

    Rebecca Edwards
    5 Mar 2015 | 10:18 am
It would be easy to dismiss A&E’s prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “Psycho” as a cheap and easy way to tap into a ready-made audience, but “Bates Motel” is so much more than an unoriginal grasp for ratings. With the third season set to begin on March 9, here’s a run-down of why you should have been watching the first two seasons – and what you need to know before tuning in. What You Need To Know: The Story So Far The series explores the relationship between a modern-day Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his overbearing mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga). The…
  • Does “Arrow” Have a Problem with Strong Women?

    Valerie David
    4 Mar 2015 | 9:46 am
At first glance, “Arrow” is a show that embraces strong female characters. The women hold down powerful jobs as technical geniuses, corporate tycoons, and government agents. They work for a variety of organizations with good, evil, or shadowy motivations. Many even get in on the martial arts action. Sounds great to see both genders equally represented on the show, right? Look deeper, however, and there’s a disturbing message that women and men aren’t so equal on the show after all. Size Does Matter “Arrow” boasts a cast of tiny-framed women. Nyssa (Katrina…

We don’t discuss ratings daily here at TVOvermind, but when a show is bringing in the type of numbers that FOX’s Empire is, it deserves to be talked about. The FOX drama’s ratings went up yet again last night, as the series was watched by more than 14 million viewers (14.2 million, to be exact) and drew a 5.7 demo rating, increases of two and six percent, respectively. The craziest news regarding Empire, though, is that it boasted the highest demo rating for any regularly scheduled broadcast drama in over five years, since Grey’s Anatomy in 2009. Since its January…

  • When Is It Better Not To Binge-Watch Shows?

We all know that we live in the age of binge-watching. The dawn of Netflix changed everything, as now to consume a past season of a show in one sitting, you no longer had to buy an expensive DVD box set. Past that, Netflix has made its own shows, debuting them all at once so even new programming can be viewed in one giant lump, if need be. This behavior has extended into traditional TV as well, however. For many shows now, rather than waiting for weekly installments, some viewers will choose to wait even longer. Wait until the season is done, and they can go back and binge-watch the entire…

For as much as I very much want to see the DC TV universe expand, perhaps even more than the new movie universe, this idea is…perplexing to say the least. So far,…

DS Cabot (Andrea Lowe), Banks (Stephen Tompkinson) and DI Morton (Caroline Catz)Rating: ITV: Wednesday, 4 March, 9pmStory: When Banks suffers a massive personal loss, along with knowledge that Annie is back with her former boyfriend, David, he is forced to navigate a complex murder investigation while still grieving.I HAVE made the mistake of criticising past series of DCI Banks, and then having to duck as fans of the show – and of Stephen Tompkinson in particular – sent their outraged comments raining down on this site.My indifference to the drama is that is has largely abandoned the…

  • Better Call Saul – slick follow-up to Breaking Bad

    27 Feb 2015 | 3:14 am
SURELY, after his scene-stealing in one of the most talked-about TV series of recent times, Breaking Bad, the only way was down for Bob Odenkirk.Expectations for his headlining the spin-off prequel Better Call Saul were muted, but most BB devotees would expect at least a dignified effort seeing as the Netflix 10-parter is written by Vince Gilligan, BB's showrunner. But delight of delights, from its opening episode BCS has been assured, grimly amusing and very promising indeed. It is, of course, the early adventures of scamster and shyster lawyer Saul Goodman - whom we meet under his real…
  • Broadchurch 2 verdict – guilty of being a letdown

    24 Feb 2015 | 10:06 am
AFTER the hoo-hah it attracted during its second outing, Broadchurch finished with the announcement that there will be a third series. The papers had a field day slamming the drama this time round, loudly blowing raspberries as the ratings drooped – Telegraph: 'Loses two-million viewers'; Independent: 'Lowest ratings'; Daily Mail: 'Boredchurch'.I felt the first episode was a good jump-start to the second series. But after that, it became implausible and dull. I quickly caught up by watching several episodes last week in time for Monday night's finale, but still felt it was a shadow of the…

  • Getting Under the Skin of “Bates Motel”

  • Which ABC Crime Drama Should You Watch?

    Rebecca Edwards
    3 Mar 2015 | 9:40 am
ABC has two new crime dramas vying for your attention. “Secrets and Lies” is looking to snag a spot in your Sunday viewing rotation, while “American Crime” is making its play for Thursday nights. Each centers on a brutal murder and the fallout for families, neighbors, and entire communities, as those left alive try to put the pieces back together and hold the culprits accountable. Each also stars a cast of heavy-hitters from Felicity Huffman to Ryan Phillippe. But if your dance card only has room for one new murder procedural, how will you pick the one that’s worth your time? Lucky…

    Valerie David
    2 Mar 2015 | 9:50 am
When CBS announced longtime “The Late Late Show” host Craig Ferguson’s successor was James Corden, many TV critics and late night fans were confused. The comedian is far more well-known in his native U.K., and viewers wondered why the network couldn’t find a talented replacement with bigger name recognition here. But there is a method to their madness. Corden has more comedy and talk show experience than American audience might expect. He also has some ambitious plans for his new hosting gig, and it could be crazy enough to work. Corden’s Resume The new late…

The biggest prize up for grabs on “The Bachelor” isn’t constantly-sighing Chris Soules and his one-horse town with more cattle than people. Every hardcore fan of the show knows the women are really competing for the chance to star on “The Bachelorette.” After fighting to win one measly rose week after week, imagine how drunk with power Bachelorettes must feel when they get to hand out more than a dozen of them. Choosing each Bachelorette from castoff “Bachelor” contestants is a smart move on ABC’s part. Viewers are already familiar with the star…

Photo by GEM The first time I heard these men play, they blew my ears out as I sat in on a raucous rehearsal to see how the sausage gets made. Even though they were just building up the first few songs they had created, something in the room felt bigger than all of us. Nox Cult is an in-your-face musical explosion, with all the rage of young punks and all the skills of old pros. Nox Cult is creating a monster bigger than itself. Definitely not on my mother’s side-or at least not on Kat–our beloved blogmistress’ side of the family. She and her siblings all managed to finish college, get proper jobs, and live in homes that didn’t have some form of sheetrock dangling in the background. Our side? Not so much. Family legend holds that our Nana believed were my father to finish any one room in our then-constantly being renovated home…
  • Twin Peaks Ended Badly Because it Undermined its Female Characters

    Kat
    27 Dec 2014 | 5:33 pm
When I was growing up, Twin Peaks was usually only mentioned at the tail end of some jackass yammering a joke about someone’s boobs. I never watched it when it aired because I was a mere twelve years old and probably too focused on Nicktoons to care. Lately there’s been a massive uptick of Twin Peaks attention on the interwebs since the announcement that it would be returning to television in a limited run for Showtime. Having binged the entire series and subsequent film and extended/deleted scenes, I can say with certainty that the first season was a boundary-pushing stylistic…

It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged-so my skills are a bit rusty… Everything changes When interacting with a small child one can be taken back by their view of the world. As adults we often comment on the “innocence” of childhood, at children’s ability to imagine crazy things and their belief that they can literally be anything that they want to be. They have a certain point of view in regards to the world, and as adults we fondly remember our childhood imaginations, our boundless energy, our belief that somehow, everything would work out right. But along the way…

Underneath the jokes and silliness (the scene where Santa Claus triumphantly rides Rudolph, comes to mind) lies an undercurrent of sorrow and regret. After all, the end of season 8 saw Danny die and Clara and the Doctor lying to one another, believing that doing so was in the other person’s best interest. Clara, who is more shocked by the appearance of the Doctor, than with the appearance of Santa Claus and his elves on her roof, tells the Doctor that she never thought she would see him again. In fact when he first appears she does not utter a word and simply stares at him in shock. And…

Just a terrible, terrible thing. CLARA: It wasn’t terrible. GRAN: Clara? CLARA: It was boring. GRAN: Boring? CLARA: It was ordinary. People just kept walking with their iPods and their shopping bags. When you think about it, not a lot actually happened, and yet several things were confirmed or made clearer, before a curious denouement focusing on the hitherto marginalised Mike (Jonathan Banks). There was a lot of comedy in this hour. There have been many stories about post-apocalypses, but they're usually action-packed ways to examine an irreversibly altered civilisation (I Am Legend), or sombre human sci-fi dramas (The Quiet Earth). Fox's THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is an outright comedy, about a man called Phil Miller (Will Forte) who's the lone survivor of an unspecified event that's resulted in the disappearance of every other person on the planet—or at least the U.S, which Phil's toured in his desperate search for companionship. It would be hard to create a TV show that completely lived up to the bleak title, as I can't…

Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood nor on television. Often times, remakes can tread on sacred ground or completely upturn the apple cart in way that leaves little resemblance to the thing that is being remade. The television mid-season brings us another attempt at reviving a classic. This time, however, those involved see no need to reinvent the wheel. “The Odd Couple” began life as a stage play by the incomparable Neil Simon, premiering on Broadway in 1965 before becoming a now-classic film three years later starring Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau. The film would see a sequel 30 years…

Rainn Wilson indelibly left his mark on Television as Dwight Schrute over nine seasons on the US version of “The Office.” Owing to Wilson’s fine acting ability, Dwight and…

How to Get Away With Murder Season 1 Finale Ok, so we got it wrong. We predicted Sam did not kill Lila. • Return of the Sequel II: The Revenge Rises Part 3

    2 Mar 2015 | 1:53 am
After two decades of prequels, spin-off and reboots, the sequel has returned, risen, and, er, rebooted? Sequels play off the good memories we have of their predecessors. When we watch a sequel, we're basically expecting to relive a cherished experience. Like sequels, prequels try to construct a world only inferred by their predecessor films. However, often the plot isn't all that interesting because we already know how the story ends. This is partly why the prequels of late have failed to hit the mark. Reboots or remakes try to start a series again but always face backlash…
  • Five things that always go wrong on cooking shows

    25 Feb 2015 | 2:23 am
#1 Overcooked meat Overcooking food tells us you failed in your restraint, monitoring and control. Worse still, you did not respect the food you are cooking. #2 Undercooked meat You are far too risk averse. Fearing overcooking the meat, you were too conservative and decided to pull the food off before it was ready. If you are making chicken, you've also made the dish inedible.  #3 Wrong flavour combination This is a failure due to ignorance. You've paired up combinations that don't work on the plate. This represents a cook with ambition, creativity and flair without the disipline. #4 You…
  • Oscar bias towards one type of movie

    23 Feb 2015 | 3:11 am
What kind of films win Oscars? Below is all the Oscar winners classified by the type of emotion they generally illicit. There are five classifications I use are:1. Reflective films. These films induce mild feelings of dejection or depression to make you reflect and ponder.2. Anxious. Films that induce anxiety or fear, like horrors and thrillers, allow us to experiment with these troubling emotions in a safe environment.3. Amused. These films give us a a laugh, to help relieve tension.4. Informed. People who watch these films are seeking education and are curious to…
  • Films that activate your startle reflex

    22 Feb 2015 | 2:26 am
Surprise is an emotion we experience when an event sidesteps our expectations. A recent study showed that surprise is one of the four core emotions that we experience along with happiness, sadness, and anger. So it makes sense that so many films are written and structured to keep us on our toes. After all, films and TV shows are essentially designed to make us feel something. Here are some films that have scenes that activate our startle reflex, a spine tingling experience that occurs when surprise--pleasant or unpleasant--occurs.SPOILERS for those who haven't seen these films. No, I…
  • Homer Simpson in a coma for 20 years and other weird theories

    15 Feb 2015 | 2:16 am
In a recent paper, a researcher criticised psychological studies for investigating unusual and counterintuitive findings just for the sake of it. The assumption is that rather than discussing the rational and empirically derived, people are more interested in theories that spark controversy and interest. This tendency isn't limited to researchers. I've noticed many unusual theories about well-known films and TV shows. Some of them are interesting. Others are bizarre. Here are some of those weird fan theories.Warning, some SPOLIERS ahead. • The Expendables TV Series In The Works At Fox

    Gem Seddon
    5 Mar 2015 | 12:29 pm
Even though The Expendables 3 was cited as a misfire by the film community, that hasn’t stopped Lionsgate from ploughing ahead on further ensemble adventures. The Sylvester Stallone-led action franchise is now making the transition to the small screen for an event series in development over at Fox. Per Deadline, The Expendables TV show will be presented as “a fun action drama.” While that brief description shares a passing resemblance to the films, the action movie star ensemble will be traded for a group of “iconic TV stars” who will pose “as a new team…

  • Netflix Orders Brit Marling Drama The OA To Series

    Isaac Feldberg
    5 Mar 2015 | 8:47 am
After a multiple-network bidding war, Netflix has picked up The OA, a top-secret drama starring Another Earth‘s Brit Marling, for eight hourlong episodes to premiere next year. The project, the premise of which is being closely guarded, hails from Marling and her frequent collaborator Zal Batmanglij. The OA builds on their relationship after 2011’s Sound of My Voice and 2013’s The East, both of which the pair co-wrote, Batmanglij directed and Marling starred in. They’ll keep to those same capacities for this series. Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner…
  • The Americans Review: “Born Again” (Season 3, Episode 6)

    Sam Woolf
    4 Mar 2015 | 8:00 pm
What’s the difference between belief and faith? You can pass off the question as being a matter of semantics, but seeing as Paige, the last well-adjusted person on The Americans, thinks it’s a distinction worth making, perhaps so should we. Maybe it’s simply a matter of knowns versus unknowns. For example: I believe that “Born Again” broadcasts important character details through costuming, as evidenced by recurring colour motifs. I have faith that this was the intention of the show’s creators, and that you, the reader, will be willing to go down this red, white, blue, and pink…
  • Dig Review

    Isaac Feldberg
    4 Mar 2015 | 4:54 pm
This review is based off the first three episodes, which were provided to us prior to broadcast. USA is investing a whole lot of energy in touting its new limited series Dig, and after just one installment (three were distributed to press for review purposes), it’s easy to see why. A high-octane conspiracy thriller set against the backdrop of a sprawling excavation in the ancient city of Jerusalem, Dig is bigger and bolder than anything the network has ever attempted, a Da Vinci Code-esque tale of murderous, religious zealots and shadowy organizations preparing for nothing less than…
