    Andy Dehnart
    27 Mar 2015 | 7:35 am
A category five cyclone devastated Vanuatu over a 24-hour period earlier this month, and relief organizations have asked for help this week. Cyclone Pam hit the island nation March 13 with sustained winds of 155 mph, and it was one of the most-intense storms ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. In Port Vila, 90 percent of the buildings were destroyed; that’s... read more » This story, Cyclone Pam devastates Vanuatu, which hosted Survivor, was published on reality blurred

I love when plans go awry on Survivor. That may explain why, during Tribal Council, when Jeff Probst asked Sierra, “Why not stick together for a couple more votes?”, I wanted someone to scream back, Why not shut up right now k thx? In terms of thrown challenges backfiring, Joaquin’s exit is nothing at all like last season’s spectacular downfall. For years, cable TV companies had a powerful sales pitch: What the hell else you gonna do? You wanted ESPN, CNN, Disney Channel, you paid the price. Now, the cable box in your living room is suddenly under assault. Sony and Dish Network’s Sling have recently launched their own TV bundles, available over broadband. Apple reportedly plans one in the fall. In addition to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and CBS All Access, HBO is finally about to offer its service online without a cable subscription, just in time for the premiere of Game of Thrones. James Poniewozik
    24 Mar 2015 | 7:30 am
In an opening video introducing The Late Late Show‘s new, very English host to Americans, James Corden learns everything that he knows about late-night hosting from Jay Leno. It’s a joke, of course, and a funny first calling card. But this very early glimpse of Corden’s new show suggests that he and his producers–and maybe late night generally–are increasingly learning from Jimmy Fallon. This isn’t to say that Corden is himself influenced by Fallon, or that his late-night style–which, who knows what that is after one episode?–will especially…

Spoilers from the series finale of Glee follow: The beautiful thing about high-school TV series is that they reproduce, in accelerated form, the cycle of life. In three or four years a group of characters is “born,” grows, matures and passes from its world. If the show lasts longer than that (and isn’t continued at a conveniently located nearby college), then the story adds another generation of younger faces. The underlying premise of a high school show like Glee is that cycles repeat. Much as you think your story is unique, after you pass there will be a whole new set of…

Spoilers for the Empire season finale below: The season finale of Empire was the equivalent of an entire season of most other shows. In other words, it was like every other night of Empire, but twice as much. Since January, the addictive music-biz drama has shot to number one with a bullet–several bullets, really–and it’s rocketed up there by burning a tank of 100% high-octane plot, trying on stories and throwing them off like a performer changing outfits at a video shoot. So if watching one hour of Empire can be dizzying, two of them back to back, throwing out twists to set…
  • Review: On Netflix’s Bloodline, a Family That Preys Together

    James Poniewozik
    18 Mar 2015 | 6:00 am
In TV, your crime dramas and your family dramas tend to be two separate genres. (The Sopranos was arguably an exception, but there crime was the family business.) It’s a strange division, given how many victims know the perpetrators, how many crimes bubble up from family rivalries and resentments. Blood may be thicker than water, but it spills just as easy. Netflix’s Bloodline (first season premieres March 20) is a drama of crime and kin, on an intimate scale. It begins with a family reunion party, and it will all end badly, as the show’s “We did a bad thing”…

This week during the the 2015 Radio and Television Correspondents Association Dinner, “Daily Show” correspondent Aasif Mandvi bashed cable news in a lengthy speech that was televised on C-SPAN. While the crowd didn’t seem particularly receptive, his sense of humor is perfect for the TVNewser crowd. Among the many zingers, Mandvi said C-SPAN “needs to be more like CNN and just forget about the news.” Mandvi went on to say, “seriously, last week I saw Anthony Bourdain break into the Situation Room with breaking news about the most amazing Philly…

  • Jon Stewart Rips Fox News as ‘The Special Network’

    Mark Joyella
    27 Mar 2015 | 1:05 pm
On “The Daily Show” Thursday, Jon Stewart mocked Fox News for its recent self-congratulatory coverage of “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot,” which many at Fox, including Megyn Kelly, correctly raised doubts about having actually happened as others ran with the phrase as fact. Noting that Kelly, as we reported earlier, had previously been correct with reservations about the Duke lacrosse story and elsewhere, Stewart said “they got it right three times in ten years–those are solar eclipse numbers, people.” Stewart even produced a “Fudgie the…

If you heard the economy was about to go in to “reverse”, you would probably be pretty worried. But consumers should actually welcome the coming era with open arms, according to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong – for, what he dubs “the reverse economy” will leave them richer. “Corporations make a tremendous amount of profit from individual consumers giving their time, energy data and money,” Armstrong tells Beet.TV. “The more that technology and the Internet Of Things comes in… you’re going to have the economics change a lot and the economy go…
  • Branded Content Key Focus of Digital Media, BoA Says

    Daisy Whitney
    27 Mar 2015 | 11:30 am
AUSTIN — Advertising has moved well beyond the thirteen-week cycles of the past and into branded content as the focus for the future, says Anne Finucane, Global Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer at Bank of America, in this interview with Beet.TV. “What’s here to stay is being able to tell a story with a beginning, middle and end with proof points that you can do in a thirty-second spot, or direct to customer with a web site, or Twitter, or Youtube,” she says. Given that shift, it’s important to look at various metrics and brand goals for campaigns today. They…

Now, that’s a reality and presents an enormous opportunity for the industry and those leading the digital charge. “When I was working in direct marketing we used to imagine what it was like if we could talk to an individual in real time and tell that person about our product and service, and everything we did was to simulate what that would feel like,” says Shelly Lazarus, Chairman Emeritus of Ogilvy &…

AUSTIN — One of the benefits of working with “new establishment brands” is they come to media planning without any baggage attached to them that iconic marketers often have to deal with, says Lisa Donohue, CEO at Starcom USA, in this interview with Beet.TV. As an example, she points to rental and hospitaly site, Airbnb, a new Starcom client, that embodies this type of modern brand. “Given that the world is changing rapidly, the benefit is that they have no status to break, only rules to rewrite,” she says. Starz is about to hit what could be the next comedy to skyrocket, and they’ve finally released a teaser. Blunt Talk, starring Patrick Stewart, goes behind the scenes of Walter Blunt’s (Stewart) news show. He’s on a mission to tell Americans how they should live and think, but he isn’t exactly the role model he hopes to present. The teaser looks great, and if anyone can make this a hit, you have to think that it’s Patrick Stewart. You’ll find her in 12 Monkeys on Syfy as Jennifer Goines, the mental institution resident and daughter of the creator of “the virus.” She’s also in the CBC show (though it airs in the U.S. if you have the right channel) Schitt’s Creek, and she plays Stevie, the motel clerk who can’t believe the screwy “rich” people who now live in her motel. 27 Mar 2015 | 7:54 am
Call the Midwife ended the third season by putting itself in a very tricky position, although it at least managed to get people very interested in how things were going to continue. The last season ends with Jenny getting a new perspective on life when Chummy’s mother dies, and the result is that Jenny decides to leave Nonnatus House. There’s something both fantastic, and completely insane, about the move, especially considering that it’s supposed to be her story, and it’s her voice-over walking us through everything. It actually becomes a little unnerving to continue…

It might not even be a big surprise for fans, but History has renewed Vikings for a fourth season. Not only is it a show that has taken off in buzz so far this season, but the ratings after only a few episodes make this a pretty obvious move. Still, I know fans always feel better going through the season knowing that there’s more on the way. Whether the ratings support a renewal or not, it’s good to see that the network has confidence in the show, especially as things have taken off with this season. As things wrapped last season, the show was somewhat open to go anywhere. It was…

While, in reality, it’s only been several weeks since series 4 ended in the UK, it has seemed like a lifetime for fans of the series to have to avoid any spoilers on the Internets waiting for the residents of London’s East End to return. In the series 4 premiere of Call the Midwife, which returns to PBS this Sunday at 8:00pET/7:00pm CT, it’s no secret that Jenny Lee, played by Jessica Raine, has left the building (Nonnatus House). It’s now 1960 and it’s been a…
  • It’s official! ‘Downton Abbey’ will cease-to-be after series 6.

    Bill Young
    26 Mar 2015 | 10:03 pm
Before you read any further…remember, there’s no crying in baseball and there will be no crying today across Downton Abbey-Nation. Unfortunately, what you have probably read recently in supermarket tabloids is now official. PBS, ITV and Carnival Films have confirmed that the forthcoming series of Downton Abbey, series 6, will be the last for what has become the highest rated drama in the last decade in the UK and the highest rated drama of all-time on PBS in America. Unfortunately, Downton Abbey is not just stunned or tired out after a long squawk. It is ready to go and meet the…
  • #TBT: After 40 years, ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’ gets a modern facelift

    Bill Young
    25 Mar 2015 | 10:03 pm
Even though it was 1975, it seems like it was just yesterday that I was standing in line at the Esquire Theatre in Dallas for the ‘world premiere’ of this unknown film called Monty Python and the Holy Grail. After about an hour in line, they handed each of us coconuts and moved us inside. As we really had no clue as to what the film was about, we just knew it was from the brilliant minds of Monty Python so it would definitely be worth the wait. Fortunately, it only took about 5 minutes before we understood the importance and meaning of getting a coconut as a parting gift for…
  • Are you ready for some ‘Blunt Talk’ with Patrick Stewart?

    Bill Young
    24 Mar 2015 | 10:03 pm
Even though they had me at ‘starring Patrick Stewart’, the fact that the new Starz scripted comedy series, Blunt Talk, comes from the mind palace of series creator Jonathan Ames (Bored to Death), who will also executive produce along with Seth MacFarlane, Tristram Shapeero and Stephanie Davis, is all the more reason to check it out when it premieres this summer. It sounds like U.S. cable channel, Starz, is equally as high on it giving them a 20-episode, 2 series commitment up front. The series, which is set in Los Angeles, follows Walter Blunt (Stewart), a Brit who’s intent on…

  • Dwayne Johnson Hosts SNL: What Were the Best and Worst Sketches?

    Michael Slezak
    28 Mar 2015 | 11:39 pm
It’s almost too easy to declare that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson “rocked” as host of this week’s Saturday Night Live — but that doesn’t mean such a statement would be inaccurate. In fact, it says a lot about the Furious 7 star’s comedic chops that the evening’s worst sketches either gave him absolutely nothing to do (“Cooking […]

  • Favorite TV Stars In New Comedy Pilots

    Valerie David
    26 Mar 2015 | 7:34 am
When our favorite show goes off the air, we can’t help wishing we could see more of the beloved characters we tuned in for each week. As that’s not possible, we can only hope the actors who portrayed those lovable folks will make a triumphant return to primetime. This new pilot season has an exciting crop of fan favorites from dramas, sitcoms, and even talk shows starring in new comedies. It’s not always easy to tell what will become a hit, but these series have a great head start with talent and a built-in audience. Ken Jeong — “Dr. Ken” Fans of this…
  • “The Royals” Breathing Life Back into Soap Operas

    Rebecca Edwards
    25 Mar 2015 | 1:50 pm
As a little girl, I remember many summer months seated next to my mom or grandmother watching the over-the-top antics of the glamorous characters on shows like “Days of Our Lives.” The overwrought drama, beautiful people, and preposterous storylines were like a drug and I just couldn’t get enough. But the glory days of soap operas are long behind us, and I have to admit I didn’t really notice their demise. And prime time offerings, like “Gray’s Anatomy” and “Revenge,” didn’t quite scratch the same itch as those daytime soaps from my childhood. But there’s a new kid in…

    Elle Lamboy
    24 Mar 2015 | 1:12 pm
The final season of “Mad Men” hasn’t even started, and I’m already nostalgic. While most trailers preview the upcoming season, the latest trailer looks back on the past six seasons, without a glimmer of what’s to come. This trailer takes us back through the past six years, all set to the tone of leading man Don Draper (Jon Hamm) talking about nostalgia. And it totally works. Here are seven things I already miss about “Mad Men” just from watching this brief, albeit powerful, trailer. 1. Peggy And Don’s Relationship As the trailer reveals, Don’s had his share of relationships…

Do a little online research on the cast of the CW hit series “Gossip Girl” and you might not see all the glitz and glam you’d expect from former Upper East Side royalty. Blake Lively is the exception to this, as we all know, but searching the rest of the cast brings up names of low-profile movies and TV shows, most of which I’d never heard of before. I can’t help but think this must feel like a disheartening letdown for these once-big stars. There are different kinds of success, however, and a little deeper digging reveals there really might be life after a hit show. As we…

When I was a kid, music videos were one of the best things that ever happened to TV. I remember my “I want my MTV” T-shirt, which I wore until it basically fell apart. Watching music videos changed TV and created a generation who didn’t want to just hear their music, but see it as well. And then somewhere along the way it all took a wrong turn. Vee-jays were talking more and playing less videos, and things like “The Real World” captured the nation’s attention. Pretty soon, reality TV took over my favorite channel, and I entered what seemed like a…

  • Better Call Saul – slick follow-up to Breaking Bad

    27 Feb 2015 | 3:14 am
SURELY, after his scene-stealing in one of the most talked-about TV series of recent times, Breaking Bad, the only way was down for Bob Odenkirk.Expectations for his headlining the spin-off prequel Better Call Saul were muted, but most BB devotees would expect at least a dignified effort seeing as the Netflix 10-parter is written by Vince Gilligan, BB's showrunner. But delight of delights, from its opening episode BCS has been assured, grimly amusing and very promising indeed. It is, of course, the early adventures of scamster and shyster lawyer Saul Goodman - whom we meet under his real…

But there’s a new kid in…
  • 7 Things I Already Miss About “Mad Men”

  • Life After “Gossip Girl” — Is That All There Is?

    Valerie David
    23 Mar 2015 | 9:44 am

It’s been awhile since I’ve blogged-so my skills are a bit rusty… Everything changes When interacting with a small child one can be taken back by their view of the world. As adults we often comment on the “innocence” of childhood, at children’s ability to imagine crazy things and their belief that they can literally be anything that they want to be. They have a certain point of view in regards to the world, and as adults we fondly remember our childhood imaginations, our boundless energy, our belief that somehow, everything would work out right. But along the way…

Underneath the jokes and silliness (the scene where Santa Claus triumphantly rides Rudolph, comes to mind) lies an undercurrent of sorrow and regret. After all, the end of season 8 saw Danny die and Clara and the Doctor lying to one another, believing that doing so was in the other person’s best interest. Clara, who is more shocked by the appearance of the Doctor, than with the appearance of Santa Claus and his elves on her roof, tells the Doctor that she never thought she would see him again. In fact when he first appears she does not utter a word and simply stares at him in shock. And…

They'll perhaps never again create anything with the impact of The League of Gentlemen, which changed the television landscape back in 1999 (inspiring a wave of twisted comedies like Nighty Night, while challenging the very idea of what a BBC comedy could look like), but INSIDE NO.9 is nevertheless a brilliant anthology show that sees former-League members Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton channel their gift for the macabre into fresh weekly stories. The format allows for great ingenuity in often claustrophobic settings; bringing in famous guest-stars (undoubted fans of the creative pair),…

Back in December I picked five new shows that I was looking forward to in 2015. All five have met with varying degrees of success so I’m pleased by my choices. With only five picks it was obvious that I would skip a few gems and duds here and there. One of those gems is a series that just didn’t really catch my interest and I readily dismissed it as a something that wouldn’t last past one or two episodes at best. Thankfully I both gave it a chance and was proven wrong. “Last Man on Earth” is the result of a collaboration between “The Lego Movie” writer/directors Phil Lord and…

Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood nor on television. Often times, remakes can tread on sacred ground or completely upturn the apple cart in way that leaves little resemblance to the thing that is being remade. The television mid-season brings us another attempt at reviving a classic. This time, however, those involved see no need to reinvent the wheel. “The Odd Couple” began life as a stage play by the incomparable Neil Simon, premiering on Broadway in 1965 before becoming a now-classic film three years later starring Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau. The film would see a sequel 30 years…

We can also use more than one style depending on the circumstances.  The Coach Coaches build teams, making use of their strengths and working on developing their weaknesses, such as when Ned Stark arranges for his daughter, Arya Stark, to have the swordplay lessons she requires. Top adopters of the coaching style: Ned Stark, Rob…

After two decades of prequels, spin-off and reboots, the sequel has returned, risen, and, er, rebooted? Sequels play off the good memories we have of their predecessors. When we watch a sequel, we're basically expecting to relive a cherished experience. Like sequels, prequels try to construct a world only inferred by their predecessor films. However, often the plot isn't all that interesting because we already know how the story ends. This is partly why the prequels of late have failed to hit the mark. Reboots or remakes try to start a series again but always face backlash…

If you are making chicken, you've also made the dish inedible.  #3 Wrong flavour combination This is a failure due to ignorance. You've paired up combinations that don't work on the plate. This represents a cook with ambition, creativity and flair without the disipline. #4 You…
  • Oscar bias towards one type of movie

    23 Feb 2015 | 3:11 am
What kind of films win Oscars? Below is all the Oscar winners classified by the type of emotion they generally illicit. There are five classifications I use are:1. Reflective films. These films induce mild feelings of dejection or depression to make you reflect and ponder.2. Anxious. Films that induce anxiety or fear, like horrors and thrillers, allow us to experiment with these troubling emotions in a safe environment.3. Amused. These films give us a a laugh, to help relieve tension.4. Informed. People who watch these films are seeking education and are curious to…

    Monica Miller
    28 Mar 2015 | 11:15 am
Just about a month before the release of the second Avengers movie, actor Jeremy Renner who has divorced recently, is currently involved in a nasty battle with estranged wife Sonni Pacheco over their daughter Ava‘s custody.     To say that the two of them aren’t on good terms in an understatement. It was pretty obvious that the two of them were to have a very nasty divorce, but for a while they acted like it might be a good idea to keep it behind closed doors. It is clear that Jeremy’s intention and first priority was his daughter, which in any case, is the way to…

Singer Sia is on the cover of Interview‘s April issue, and speaks about huge white hair, her aspiration to create music for as long as she can, and why she decided on not showing her face in an interview or during a live performance.       I would like to be able to make great pop music for another 20 years. And it feels like creating a sort of inanimate blonde bob and allowing other people to play the role of the pop singer, it affords me a little bit more freedom in terms on my expiration date.   Sia is not new to the business, but what brought the Austrialian…

  • Walking Dead Spinoff Is Officially Called Fear The Walking Dead; Trailer Due Sunday

    Gem Seddon
    27 Mar 2015 | 2:50 pm
Whatever AMC chose to label its upcoming spinoff of The Walking Dead, the series would still pull in a horde of viewers based on one simple fact: it’s related to The Walking Dead. The zombie serial has without a doubt penetrated society. It overtakes social media platforms every Sunday night. It infiltrates our cultural referencing (“That sweater is totally something Carol would wear – in Alexandria, of course!”). It has become a beacon of hope in a TV age awash with predictable procedurals – and now we’re in for a look at the rest of that unexplored…
  • First Trailer For HBO’s J.K. Rowling Adaptation The Casual Vacancy Spirals Out Of Control

    Isaac Feldberg
    27 Mar 2015 | 8:36 am
Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy is her first book for adults, and the first trailer for an upcoming HBO adaptation of it makes that abundantly clear. “Look at my tits,” one character crows as others drop F-bombs, drink, smoke, fight each other and generally get up to other NSFW shenanigans. Whether that’s an accurate representation of the plot or a sneak peek meant to be exceptionally shocking remains to be seen. The three-part miniseries has certainly assembled enough strong performers to put it on any self-respecting TV snob’s radar. With…
  • The Blacklist Review: “The Longevity Initiative” (Season 2, Episode 17)

    Adam A. Donaldson
    26 Mar 2015 | 9:15 pm
If we took a census and made a list of super-villain goals, taking over the world would probably make the number one slot, and achieving immortality would probably make number two. Real-life science has been wholeheartedly pursuing the goal of unending life. I even reviewed a documentary about the subject for this very website at last year’s Hot Docs, but despite some giant leaps in knowledge, living forever is still just a fantasy. Unless you’re a jellyfish. The latest episode of The Blacklist had immortality on the mind, as Red’s pick for this week’s adventure was…
