Just when we didn't think Jimmy Fallon couldn't get cooler after killing it as Sunday's Emmy host, the Late Night cut-up went and one-upped himself for his 300th episode.First, he braved a sit-down with notoriously chilly "Vogue" editrix Anna Wintour and be-kilted fashion designer Marc Jacobs — while wearing a Jacobs suit, no less — that could have fallen flatter than a runway model's chest. • Big Brother will be preempted, delayed tonight by football for many people

    Andy Dehnart
    2 Sep 2010 | 9:50 am
Big Brother 12's lack of drama will be delayed for many people across the country, while others will see the show on a different channel. While people in bulky costumes slamming into each other and competing as if winning actually matters might typically be confused with the reality competition, I can assure you it's something different, even with all the ass-slapping. That's because of final pre-season NFL football games tonight, which reality blurred TSG and football consultant Victor helped me decipher. Apparently the college kids who play the football games will also be doing something…

Could this just be another all-star special like the show did at the start of season three? Instead, they came off as a barely reconfigured challenge from last season and a bit that lasted only a few minutes and was almost ignored by some of the houseguests, like Enzo, whose puppet moved its mouth once for every three or four sentences he spoke. There were good moments here: I laughed out loud at Enzo's sock puppet getting its mouth blurred when Enzo swore, and there was a lot of drama for a few seconds when nominees Enzo and Ragan were the last two standing in…

Usually when a nominee loses at an awards show, the only sign of discontent is that split-second of a fake smile as the winner's name is read and the picture-in-picture boxes showing the losers are still on the air. But not Deadliest Catch executive producer Thom Beers. He's upset his show lost and isn't afraid to let people know, cry afoul of the Emmys, and take cheap shots at the winner. This was supposed to be part one of a two part article until I screwed up the timer. If you think I'm bad with programming a blog you should see me on heavy machinery. Anyway, the other part was yesterday and yesterday's is today. This is a post for executives, studios, networks, pod producers, critics, D-girls, professors, wives – anyone who gives script notes. How you present notes is often as important or more important than the notes themselves. There are times when the messenger should be killed. Here are some do-nots when delivering notes. And there are enough of them that this is a…

Here are some ways not to give notes. I screwed up and posted part 2 first. The first half of this helpful constructive rant will be posted tomorrow. The point is how not to give notes. Tomorrow will be centered more on network and studio executives. Think through the ramifications of your notes. Don’t just say, “let’s do this instead”. Your suggestion may solve one immediate problem but screw up everything else that follows. Remember, every story beat, every line has been discussed (usually to death) and is there in that form for a reason. I’m not saying it can’t be improved but…

A few days ago, the city of Cleveland lost a truly great and important man. And I’m not talking about LeBron James. A hundred years from now, few–other than a few sports nerds–will remember him as much more than statistics on a long ago basketball court. They will, however, remember Harvey Pekar, whose life and works will surely remain an enduring reference point of late 20th and early 21st century cultural history. Like those other giants of their eras, Twain, Whitman, Dos Passos, Kerouac, Kesey, the times he lived in cannot adequately be remembered without him. It is true…

In other news, over at http://bourdainmediumraw.com, we’re running a contest associated with my latest book. The best 500 word essay gets published in a future paperback edition of MEDIUM RAW. My publisher and I thought this was a pretty good prize for a previously unpublished writer of a short essay. But it has been widely suggested that this was in fact a cruel, cynical and exploitative exercise in “crowd-sourcing”. That instead of writing a few new paragraphs myself, we decided that this was somehow an easier, more cost-effective strategy for providing…

This morning, Russel T. Davies and Julie Gardener shared some information about the upcoming series of Torchwood. "Torchwood: The New World" is slated to premiere on the Starz network in the summer of 2011. That new world branches out from Cardiff and into Washington DC and Los Angeles. Davies confirmed that Eve Myles, John Barrowman, and Kai Owen will be returning for the new season. No word as of yet about Gwen's baby or the nature of Jack's return. Gardner did say that this series would be a reboot ("Children of Earth" was often called a "relaunch" by the production team) in order to…

The internet is buzzing with the news that John Barrowman will be guest starring on Desperate Housewives as a "villain". The rumor has been going around for months now but was finally confirmed by the Daily Mail and shortly thereafter by Barrowman's web team. Filming is scheduled for March and April in the US. The episodes (they did say plural!) will air in the spring for US audiences and some time around May or June for UK audiences. John will no doubt have just as much fun filming as we all will watching him. Now readers, I wonder, how do you picture his character on that show? What do you…

By David Robinson, Editor I’m sitting in an edit room poring over hour upon hour of footage from the second camera crew that was taken along on the Kerala, INDIA episode of No Reservations.  The idea was to document the makings of an episode of No Reservations.  You know, pull back the curtain and see the magical machinations at work, that sort of thing.  The reality, so far, is a laundry list of TMI moments that would make a band of syphilitic Vikings queasy.  Given that each member of the crew is a veteran of the show it’s amazing how unaware or apathetic they are to the…

By Diane Schutz, Segment Producer By now, you may already know – we first attempted to shoot a NO RESERVATIONS episode in Lebanon in 2006 – and wound up in the middle of a war [as my snarky friend Brian said: "Who would have thought such a thing could happen... IN BEIRUT?"]. I’m still a little bitter that we lost that Emmy to Ted Koppel, but I digress… We’d fallen in love with the country before war struck. We’d had two days of meeting people who were proud of their country, who wanted to share their homes and their food and their culture with us. After…

By Jared Andrukanis, Segment Producer I know this is a blog about our Rome shoot, not a lesson on film methodology…but trust me – this is important stuff to know. In filmmaking parlance, there are two particular kinds of shooting, that can be used to quantify the day’s work – “On Set” and “On Location”. The names themselves are relatively self-explanatory, whereas one refers to shooting in a controlled, man-made environment and the other, a less controlled, natural setting. Most films with a considerable budget film the majority of difficult…

Little did I know that Dubai, much like New York City, is a melting pot of peoples and cultures that all welcomed us into their shops and homes with smiles and friendly nods. One man, a wealthy local fisherman who saw me filming his ships and workers, brought me into his cool air conditioned rest tent to have a moment’s rest and share a delicious cup of coffee with him and his friends. By: Chris Collins, Executive Producer The Where It All Began episode of No Reservations is made up almost entirely of footage from the unreleased documentary “Out of the Pan into the Fire.” Ten years ago, just after “Kitchen Confidential” was published, a photographer named Dmitri Kasterine had the foresight to walk into Brassiere Les Halles with a video camera and start shooting Tony Bourdain in his environs. He beat Lydia and me to the punch by roughly ten months and personally that made the material, which we had never seen before, all the more compelling. His film…

When it was time to revisit the iconic theme song for CBS’ “Hawaii-Five-0” redux, composer Brian Tyler decided to look back to his childhood for inspiration. “I was a huge fan. I had seen reruns as a kid and loved the theme song. That was one that I loved playing,” Tyler said. “I mentioned that the show could really use the original theme song. I didn’t want to force an update that really didn’t need fixing.” Tyler said it was important for him to keep the integrity of the original composition because viewers associate the theme with the show. “The theme is so iconic.

We've lost the mascot. And there's no longer a doctor in the house. Two competitors got the ax on "MasterChef" this week, including roly-poly Jake, the construction worker who moved like a swan -- a "big" swan -- and embodied the essence of "MasterChef" in its search for a diamond in the rough. But Jake ultimately proved to be too rough around the edges and lost the pasta challenge. So did Tracy, the doctor who said she discovered in midlife that she was meant to heal through cooking, not doctoring. That one shocked me: Do you remember the ramp-up to…

When this season started, Angelo was the cheftestant most likely to succeed:  he came to the competition with a Michelin star under his apron and a toque full of arrogance.  It almost seemed unfair, to throw this star in with the other less celebrated chefs. But somewhere along the way, Angelo seemed to lose his confidence.  He nearly went home for his beef wellington a few weeks ago, and last week he bummed out the judges by turning out pork on a soggy bun in the baseball concession battle.  Where he once seemed to be some kind of master manipulator playing mind games with his…

Right, stop whatever you're doing for ten minutes and watch this. It's the animated prequel to the next audio series of Doctor Who spin-off Professor Bernice Summerfield. And I'd make it full screen: Some back story for the uninitiated: created by new series writer Paul Cornell (Father's Day, Human Nature) and voiced by Lisa Bowerman, Summerfield's adventures began in the pages of the original Doctor Who novels published in the late 90s when the was "terminally" off air (she was the companion in the original novel version of Human Nature), and was a companion of the Seventh (McCoy) Doctor.

Doctor Who: The Big BangReview by Tom Dickinson The Big Bang is one of the most thrilling, most enchanting, and most exciting Doctor Who stories I've ever experienced in any medium. But it's also one of the most deeply flawed, primarily because it gets too bogged down in its own impressive complexity. Recently I was watching the featurette on the Mawdryn Undead DVD, in which Peter Davison, Nicholas Courtney and Eric Saward all wonder whether that story might have been a bit too complicated for Doctor Who. If they were watching The Big Bang, it must surely have made their heads spin.

  • Professional Organizer Dorothy Breininger Talks 'Hoarders' Season 3 And Shares Clutter Control Tips

    Christine Champagne
    2 Sep 2010 | 7:30 am
Filed under: Features, Celebrity InterviewsI can't say I enjoy watching 'Hoarders.' In fact, it is probably one of the most difficult shows on television to sit through. Still, like so many of you, I am addicted to the A&E series, which kicks off a third season of extreme clutter control with two new back-to-back episodes on Mon., Sept. 6 at 9PM ET. "Season 3 is by far the most emotional season," said Dorothy Breininger, a professional organizer and consulting producer on the show who dares to enter the homes of hoarders all across America. "Before we were dealing with people who had…

Filed under: Recaps, Stay TunedOh, 'Better Off Ted' and 'Party Down,' why did you have to be so good? You made most other comedies seem leaden and false by comparison. Fans of 'Better Off Ted' had to put up with a lot during its two-season run, which ended in cancellation. The critically acclaimed show was mostly ignored by ABC, despite the fact that it developed into an increasingly hilarious workplace comedy. You'd have thought the biggest indignity faced by Ted and the crew at Veridian Dynamics was ABC's cracked-out scheduling of the show (season 2 premiered in December, one of…

  • Why Bringing Neil Gaiman's 'Sandman' to TV is a Bad Idea

    Maureen Ryan
    2 Sep 2010 | 6:00 am
Filed under: TV News, Stay TunedBattle stations, comic-book nerds: A possible TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman's 'The Sandman' is in the works. This is probably a bad idea. Of course, this adaptation is still in the early stages, and as is the case with most properties being developed for television, it's entirely possible (if not probable) that the project will never get made. Still, there are quite a few reasons to treat the idea of a TV version of 'Sandman,' which tells the story of the Dream (or Morpheus) and his similarly powerful siblings, with extreme caution. I say that despite reading…

    2 Sep 2010 | 8:56 am
Yesterday HBO announced that Hung, its dark comedy about a suburban Michigan gigolo and his pimp, will get a third season. I'm pleased and surprised. I don't think the show has lived up to its potential, but when it's on—and the past couple of episodes have been strong—it's an insightful look at people trying to [...]

Below is an interview with Charlie Hunnam, who plays Jax Teller, and after that Q&A, there are short chats with Mark Boone Jr., who plays Bobby Munson, and Tommy Flanagan, who plays Chibs Telford. "The Big C" (9:30 p.m. Central Monday, Showtime: two and a half stars) might as well be called "The Big L." Laura Linney is the star of this "cancer comedy," and she provides most of the reason to watch it and to put up with the excesses of the first few episodes. (The entire first episode of "The Big C" is below.) Linney's characters, in film or TV, tend to have a number of the same traits: They're a bit tightly wound and neurotic but also grounded and kind and thus innately winning. Linney glows with an inner light yet also her characters also…

You may have read that Hallmark Channel, owned by a company mostly owned by Kansas City’s Hallmark Cards, was dropped by AT&T U-verse, no doubt over a dispute over how much AT&T should continue paying Hallmark for the privilege. A few years ago he started cooking up webisodes with Walter Kim and Jay Johnson, the “Late Show’s” longtime web editors. Most of them are short, pointless, spazzy and hilarious. On last night’s Late Show, Michael Douglas told David Letterman that he had Stage IV throat cancer, but his doctors are optimistic. He shared that he had just completed his first of eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. He appeared thinner than usual and told Dave that in the coming weeks he voice will also change and he may not be able to swallow solid food. He remained upbeat during the interview, saying that the cancer had not spread below his throat, adding that he has an 80% chance of recovery, with some doctors even more hopeful. Letterman wanted to do something for the actor…

  • "Mad Men" and "Modern Family" Take Top Emmy Honors, but the Show? A Snooze! (Video)

    Megan Smith

When it comes to writing about the annual primetime Emmy awards, it's hard to know where to start.  Do I start with the awards and how some very worthy performances were rewarded, even though so many more were overlooked in favor of "paint-by-numbers voting?"  Or do I start with the snooze-worthiness of the show itself? Hmmm.  What to do? All right, let's start with the awards themselves.  First the good news.  The marvelous Jane Lynch was rewarded for her hysterically evil high school coach, Sue Sylvester on Glee.   It's very cool that someone who's worked in the business for years…

I gotta tell ya', so far, very few of the fall TV shows are getting me excited.  I've seen a few pilots, read some press releases, watched some clips, and so far I've decided there are only three new shows that will make me set my DVR religiously:   Hawaii Five-0, Undercovers and Outlaw. 1. Hawaii Five-0 because it's based on the iconic CBS classic which starred the late Jack Lord as the tough guy cop with the forelock that wouldn't quit, Steve McGarrett.  As with the original, the Hawaiian setting is a huge draw, and the cast is very promising:  Alex O'Loughlin (Three Rivers), is the new…

When you think of online video, you think of YouTube and Hulu. But those aren't the only two choices when it comes to online video. There are a bunch of niche video websites that showcase professional and home made videos by genre. You may find that many of these videos are also on YouTube, but the difference is that some of these websites have their own communities and how-to guides for creating just the type of video you want. First up, for some of the most viral comedy videos, check out Funny or Die. There you'll find stars like Will Ferrell, Heidi Montag and Jewel in a variety of spoofs…

After false lead after false lead, I finally found a version of the 12-minute Lost “epilogue” floating around online and I’m very glad I did. If you want to wait for the official DVD/Blu-Ray version to find out what happened, stop reading now. In other words: SPOILERS AHEAD, DIVERT DIVERT DIVERT! OK, so if you’re still reading, you either have watched the video or you want to know what’s in it (I won’t link to it here, as I don’t want to contribute to the takedown hunt — plus, for all I know, the version I saw has been taken down anyhow.) I truly love this little town in the middle of nowhere in Oregon; I have since the first episode. Eureka’s one of those scifi shows firmly grounded in science and reality (of sorts). It seems like the kind of place you just might get if you gathered the finest scientific minds of their generation and put them all in one place with, more or less, unlimited resources. It was obvious from the very first episode that Allison and Carter were going to get together, sooner or later. And in Season 2 when they got married and Allison got pregnant, it seemed they weren’t going to tease us…

I haven’t decided what background to go with yet, but it made no sense to reinstall that old background. I’m not fond of this neon orange, so don’t worry – it’s not here to stay. I’ve been rather lax in updating the blog in the past month, as you’ve likely noticed. The end of two of my all-time favorite shows…

Before I get into the meat of the matter, I have to ask this of the folks out there who didn’t like the finale of Lost last night: You didn’t like the Battlestar Galactica ending either, did you? I ask that not to accuse you of just not liking finales to shows you’ve loved. I ask that because in both cases, I believe the ending was absolutely the culmination of everything that came before. The endings MADE SENSE. Yes, you can nitpick and complain about little things here or there that didn’t make sense. When you’ve unraveled as much string as both of these shows…

  • 24 Season 1: 10AM-11AM Retro Review

    23 Aug 2010 | 6:11 pm
What is genius, I ask you? In my estimation, it's seeing something no one has ever considered before- something that is divine in its beauty and simplicity. For example, take a simple hand towel. For most of us, we look at the hand towel as a (wait for it...) a towel you use to dry your hands. Enter the genius that is Jack Bauer. He looks at a hand towel a little differently... and it's the scariest friggin' thing you could possibly imagine.  But more on that in a bit... Ted Cofell is a smart guy in his own right. He makes a lot of money and he spends it well, on bullet-proof limos and…

Man, it's tough to die on "24" if you're a 90 lb. woman! First, it took a horde of rabid alpacas to finally dispatch Janet York to the afterlife (it was a deleted scene on the DVD, trust me) and now we have CTU moley mole Jamey exhibiting faint signs of life, despite losing all of her freakin' blood. Is this some bizarro universe where waifs wander the countryside, scaring the living crap out of everyone and where Natalie Portman is the world's strongest human? Where the heck am I going with this? Anyway, Jamey is carted off to get some vital fluids, and Nina breaks it to the gang that their…

And we're back! Last time on 24, Ira Gaines won the booby-prize on the new hit FOX series "So You Think You Can Assassinate?" Aaron Pierce does not allow this sort of nonsense- not in his house! Meanwhile, Jack Bauer is hauled before the heretofore legendary Frank Simes, liaison between the Secret Service and CTU. We heard his name only once so far this season, when Jack called him, asking to be placed on the guest list for the Palmer breakfast, but all signs point to Simes being a cool dude.  When he first sees Jack, he sasses Bauer with some truly cynical retorts. I half expect Simes…

  • Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘Love Never Dies’ Ditches Broadway

    1 Sep 2010 | 6:03 am
Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage sequel to the long-running Phantom of the Opera, might have been dealt a fatal blow, thanks in part to devastating reviews on the West End and a director and choreographer jumping ship, all before a promised Broadway run. Michael Ridel reports in the New York Post: “In the theater, “indefinitely” has a way of becoming “absolutely not gonna happen” — and that, London theater sources say, is what’s happened to [Love Never Dies].  The $15 million London production… will not be seen in New York.

Sutton Foster and Zach Braff Hollywood stars coming to Broadway continues to be a talking point in many theatrical circles, but what about the A-list theatrical talent making the rounds in and around Times Square?  Sutton Foster is one of those Broadway stars that haven’t had success up on the silver screen, but when it comes to the live stage, they are top performers. From her breakthrough turn in Thoroughly Modern Millie to showboat roles in The Drowsy Chaperone and Young Frankenstein, Foster has been topping theater marquees for most of the decade.  She was the only reason to bother…

Breaking into show business can be a monumental task for entertainers, but as sites like YouTube provide unknown creative types with an outlet, and millions of viewers, the road to stardom is quickly being repaved. Now, people like Justin Bieber can skyrocket to superstardom by creating a homemade video presence online, showcasing their musical talent. But, what if that talent was the ability to sing horribly off key? Colleen Ballinger has stumbled across a unique path to fame, thanks to Miranda, a zany tone-deaf character the 23-year-old California native created three years ago. What began…

One man. A 20-member band. A single piano. And a Broadway stage. Quite a potent combination when that man happens to be Harry Connick Jr. The smooth singing star wrapped up a short concert run at the Neil Simon Theater this past weekend, with cameras rolling for a future release. Broadway has been full of popular singers, albeit those “singers” have been coming from such hack talent pools as “American Idol,” yet none have really matched the presence of Connick. He might be a movie star, but he’s a singer first and foremost, and that kind of combination screams…

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” a film that set the standard for not just animation, but for the art of musical storytelling, garnered such critical praise in its initial theatrical release that it received multiple Academy Award nominations. Had Walt Disney been alive, he would have surely been proud — the founding father of Walt Disney Studios had spent much of his career fighting for the recognition of animated films within the Hollywood establishment. “Beauty and the Beast,” the title track from the soundtrack, was the brainchild of Howard Ashman and…

I have to come right out and be honest, and tell you that, as huge a fan of PSYCH as I am, one or two episodes this season have let me down a bit. I’m not absolutely sure why that is, but I think that we have come to a point in the show where overplaying the general doubt in Spencer’s abilities is actually annoying. Much like the oft-compared (even rather brilliantly within the show) The Mentalist, or something like House, after the first dozen or so times our heroes turn out to be right, it would be nice if the rest of the cast opened to the idea that they might be right. Despite…

You may be thinking to yourself that Hell’s Kitchen just ended, and of course you’d be right, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t about to start again… because it is. The eighth installment of the show is kicking of September 22nd, and (assuming various points-of-view) it looks like a good one. The past two seasons have started off somewhat rough, giving us both a walk off and the unforgettable invitation for Gordon to step outside. This season leads us in with previews of a group of cheftestants who are apparently a little less willing to take what Ramsay dishes…

I have to admit from the start that the popularity of Dancing with the Stars completely eludes me. It was an interesting bit of fun the first time around, but mainly for its novelty value. There was a nice combination of showcasing famous people, and giving them something to do that was mildly entertaining without being embarrassing simply for the sake of being embarrassing. The second and third seasons had a few moments of interest, even if the biggest tune-in sell was watching people who weren’t any good, rather than watching any “talent” take shape. Now, however, I just…

The Vampire Diaries had as much going against as for it when it first hit televisions, and the show’s popularity is actually somewhat surprising. While the general popularity of vampires, indeed teen vampires, obviously leads to a variety of efforts hoping to cash in, at some point the genre is overworked, and you’re rolling the dice as much as with any other new show. With not only the general vampire similarity, but also the time-honored “good” vampire struggling against his nature (a key in the other big two at the moment), predicting the success of The Vampire…

On Monday, we reported that Lauren German, Kristin Kreuk, and Paula Patton were in contention for the sexy female role in Mission: Impossible 4. Well Paula Patton has emerged victorious! The Deja Vu star will play a young operative who works with Ethan Hunt. Tom Cruise will reprise his role as Hunt, but Paramount doesn't want to make a big deal about his involvement.
