The expansive 17th-century estate turned Michelin-starred hotel sits on 65 acres with lush gardens and outstanding views over the River Thames and to the Chiltern…
  • Rare Footage Shows Discovery Of Ebola In 1976

    Eline Gordts
    24 Oct 2014 | 10:07 am
In the fall of 1976, an international team of researchers arrived in Yambuku, a small village in the north of Zaire, the country now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The researchers had traveled thousands of miles to research a mysterious illness that was spreading rapidly and had killed many in the area.Doctors had first learned of the disease in September of that year, when a thermos carrying blood samples from a Belgian nun working in Yambuku arrived at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. Initial suspicions that the nurse was infected with the deadly…
  • Nations Devastated By Ebola Were Already Under Siege In The Global Drug War

    Matt Ferner
    24 Oct 2014 | 10:02 am
West Africa’s public infrastructure is now collapsing under the burden of the Ebola outbreak. But the health and political systems in that region were already under attack from another deadly force -- drug trafficking and the harsh criminal response so frequently wielded in the global war on drugs. What makes it so hard to combat the spread of Ebola in West Africa -- weak public infrastructure, porous borders and high poverty rates -- are some of the same factors that drew the narco-traffickers. And the impulse to focus on law enforcement over medical treatment in these crises can be equally…

  • black-ish Whips Up a Conversation About Spanking

    James Poniewozik
    23 Oct 2014 | 8:04 am
I liked the pilot of black-ish a lot. But–as often happens with sitcom pilots–I wondered how the show would sustain the premise over a series. Would it, on the one hand, be a string of variations on “Is our family black enough?” questions? Or, on the other hand, would it settle in and become another ABC family comedy, with hijinks and conflicts and special holiday episodes? Over its first few episodes, though, black-ish has shown that at best, it can be something more nuanced and rewarding than either. “Crime and Punishment,” the show’s riskiest…
  • Time Is a Round Donut: The Graze-Watching Possibilities of Simpsons World

    James Poniewozik
    22 Oct 2014 | 9:21 am
Make 550-some episodes of any TV show, and some unusual coincidences start to turn up. Tuesday, I was playing around with Simpsons World, the immersive website/app that allows cable subscribers access to every Simpsons episode ever made. The very first two episodes I watched–one randomly served for me by the site, the other chosen after I did a search on “Marvin Monroe”–both began with Homer wrecking his car after a toy got lodged under the brake pedal. As one does. (The episodes: season 21’s “Rednecks and Broomsticks” and season 15’s…
  • Why Nothing Is Getting Canceled (Yet)

    James Poniewozik
    21 Oct 2014 | 6:47 am
We’re a month into the official fall TV season, and the big news so far is… nothing. As in: nothing has yet been canceled. (I realize, of course, that I may shake loose the season’s first cancellation simply by typing these words.) What’s happened? Have the broadcast networks finally perfected their art, discovering the unerring secret of delicious, addictive entertainment? No. As usual, there have been some out-of-the-box hits (How to Get Away With Murder, in particular). And there have been a few thundering disappointments (at Fox, especially, where Mulaney just had…
  • Manhattan, the TV Season’s Secret Weapon

    James Poniewozik
    20 Oct 2014 | 5:37 am
I cannot always pretend to understand this new age of television, with its surfeit of TV series from websites and tiny channels and online bookstores. But I am enjoying it. Take Manhattan, the richly textured period drama about scientists trying to create the atomic bomb, in Los Alamos, N.M., during World War II. It comes from WGN America, the cable-broadcast “superstation” that’s trying to rebrand itself with original scripted dramas. (The first, the loopy supernatural serial Salem, debuted earlier this year.) It’s created little pop-culture buzz. (It’s…

I wasn’t going to write about #Gamergate. Most of the video gaming world is outside my experience. I used to play more, when I had more time and hair, but now I only play a few tablet or iPhone games, and badly. (I get a 384 on Threes, it’s basically a national holiday.) Not my issue, I figured. Weeks went on, and I kept seeing references to a culture war between gamers and gaming journalists, especially feminist critics of the industry, that had devolved into vile sexist harassment and death and rape threats. So I started reading, and to an outsider anyway, Gamergate led to a…

  • Former CNN, Fox News Business Anchor Terry Keenan Dies, at 53

    Mark Joyella
    24 Oct 2014 | 8:14 am
Terry Keenan, a former CNN and Fox News anchor, has died. She was 53. Keenan’s sister, Linda, tells TVNewser the cause of death was a massive cerebral hemorrhage. She had been receiving treatment at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital. A pioneer among women working in financial news, Keenan left Fox News “to work on her most cherished production: her son Benno Kass, with husband Ron Kass,” her family writers. She was still sharing her financial knowledge, though, working as a business columnist for the Sunday editions of the New York Post. Keenan’s last story for the…

  • This Time, Another ‘New Day’ Anchor Handles the Gov. Cuomo Interview

    Chris Ariens
    24 Oct 2014 | 7:11 am
Late last year, “New Day” anchor Chris Cuomo got some flack for interviewing his older brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. This morning, following news of the first Ebola diagnosis in New York City, as well as the hatchet attack against NYPD officers in Queens, co-anchor Alisyn Camerota interviewed Gov. Cuomo. But there was room for levity. At the end of the interview Gov. Cuomo told Camerota, “As a matter of full disclosure, any help you need with your co-host, I am in a position to be helpful. I have some very secret strategies that have worked very well. Knowing the…

  • Ebola Arrives in New York; Cable News Clears the Decks for Rolling Coverage

    23 Oct 2014 | 7:08 pm
Well, Canada, it was nice, but, well, we’ve got Ebola in New York. You could almost hear the cell phones ringing with news executives’ re-worked plans: We’re going to pull you guys out of Ottawa as soon as you’re off the air. Everybody to New York. The cable news networks reacted with a frenzy of reporting Thursday evening in the wake of New York City’s first confirmed case of Ebola. As New York is home to the nation’s major media, the emergence of Dr. Craig Spencer was enough to send producers pulling the keys from around their necks to unlock the nuclear…

CHICAGO — Facebook is a marketer’s dream for video, but brands need to be smart about how to use the targeting, fan base, and types of video on the social network, says Len Kendall, Director of Social Marketing at Havas Worldwide, in an interview with Beet.TV. “Because of segmentation and targeting, it is a great ad platform and great way to reach millions around the world,” he says, adding that Facebook is easy to scale and has robust data behind it. If he says so himself, Ziff Davis under Shah may has turned a corner. “Ziff is probably one of the more remarkable turnaround stories in media today,” he tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “Five years ago, the company was in bad shape. Comcast, for instance, logged its 30 billionth program viewed on demand in the last year and has seen 100% growth in time spent viewing in the last three years, says Matt Strauss, Senior VP and Business Manager of Video Services at Comcast in an interview with Beet.TV. What’s more, about 40% of VOD viewing falls in the C3 window for many shows, and as a result it’s having a material impact in lifting ads and views…

  • What ever happened to Jack Bauer? Season 9 finale review

    17 Jul 2014 | 6:32 pm
My delay in writing this came first from a hectic flight back into the country on the night the show aired and with me struggling to find a way to write a review now that I missed the instant "quick review" format that I've been utilizing all season. Having some time to reflect on the episode, here's my less traditional take on yet another finale of 24: Watching the end to Season 9 of 24, called "Live Another Day," I found myself spacing out right after Audrey Raines bit the bullet thanks to Chinese mercenaries. My mind drifted to a scene far removed from what I was looking at on screen- I…

  • Marry Me Review – TV NBC

    Marc Eastman
    17 Oct 2014 | 8:08 am
Casey Wilson and Ken Marino are perfectly matched, niche comedians, and NBC‘s latest effort, Marry Me, looks to be a vehicle perfectly constructed for them. Of course, that still leaves open the question of whether or not people are going to jump on board. Brought to you by one of the writers of Happy Endings, and obviously with one of its stars, the show has a connection to the comedic stylings of that show, but clearly pulls from the “cornier” comedic abilities of Wilson and Marino. Also like Happy Endings, the show’s only chance at survival is to run as far and as…

American Horror Story Freak Show Review American Horror Story, like a number of other shows in recent years, is at this point more involved in a certain gamification of television content production than anything that is especially similar to story construction. While the usual course is that shows either kick off with this sort of theory in mind, or slowly succumb to the allure of an easy ratings/effort ratio, AHS, because of its “season” format, gives us both. The first season, while solidly in the campy horror genre, laid out some interesting characters who were set on the…

  • Neil Patrick Harris Was The Fourth Choice To Host The Oscars. Here Were The First Three.

    Penn Collins
    22 Oct 2014 | 4:25 pm
While Neil Patrick Harris seems like he as born to host the Oscars, and has garnered high hopes since his announcement two weeks ago, he was not the first choice of this year’s producers. Who also happen to be last year’s producers. No, he was not the first choice, he was not the second choice, and he wasn’t the third choice. Those honors go to Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, respectively. I really can’t imagine Chris Rock or Julia Louis-Dreyfus buying into the annual Hollywood circle-jerk (though Rock did host once before), so they passed, and…

  • ABC To Give Us ‘The Finger’ Starring Nick Frost

    Penn Collins
    22 Oct 2014 | 10:44 am
In a rare TV story that isn’t based on an old remake, we’re pleased to announce that ABC is working towards getting us The Finger, a family comedy starring frequent Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cohort, Nick Price. The show will follow Frost as he aims to retire from his life as jewel thief “The Finger” and open a modest sandwich shop to spend time with his nine year-old son. Frost was actually in the running for a TV show last year, Fox’s Sober Companion, which didn’t get picked up. Here’s to hoping that Frost can find a home in The Finger, and that…
  • Tom Hanks’ ‘Bachelor Party’ Will Also Be Adapted For Television

    Penn Collins
    22 Oct 2014 | 10:34 am
The past few months have been a cavalcade of announcements from studios that they’re remaking old, forgotten, not-really-beloved properties for a new generation. In keeping with the prior announcements, we’re getting news that the early-80′s Tom Hanks before-he-was-famous film Bachelor Party will be getting the TV treatment. Why? Don’t ask why. This is Hollywood. It’s happening, ok? The show is getting looked at by ABC and will be written by the guys who brought us New Girl. It’s thought to be an anthology (of course) that would bring us a different wedding…
  • ‘Breaking Bad’ Action Figures Pulled From Toys R Us For…Obvious Reasons

    Penn Collins
    22 Oct 2014 | 9:14 am
Fans of TV’s Breaking Bad will have to go beyond Toys R Us to find their favorite series’ stars in action figure form. A group, led by a Florida mother (is there a more haunting phrase in the world than “Florida mother?”) signed a change.org petition to get the toy retailer to pull the likenesses of meth-dealing, child killing characters. Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I mean, you could always just not buy the action figures for your kid, but I suppose that taking them off the shelf is a more draconian means to that end as well. Toys R Us issued a statement saying,…

The British Film Institute has found two lost episodes of the ITV comedy sketch classic, At Last the 1948 Show which starred comedy legends, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Marty Feldman. As if 2014 wasn’t already a busy year for Dame Maggie Smith, on Friday, October 17, the Dowager Countess was made a member of the Order of Companion of Honour in a ceremony at Windsor Castle. Ok, technically, it was actually Dame Maggie Smith that received this well-deserved honor, but it was fun to think about the concept of Queen Elizabeth II meeting the Downton Abbey matriarch even if it was just for a brief moment. Given for outstanding achievement in the arts, literature, music, science, politics, industry, or religion, the honor recognized Smith for her six decades in theater,…
  • ‘Happy Valley’ to ‘Grantchester’ was quite a change for James Norton

    Bill Young
    20 Oct 2014 | 10:28 pm
After a recent binge-watching session of Sally Wainwright’s amazing series, Happy Valley, I began to see the inherently evil figure of Tommie Lee Royce on every street corner. Played brilliantly by James Norton, Royce was the stereotypical tormented soul/psychopathic killer (if there is such a thing). Thankfully, to get that image out of my head, all I had to do was quickly fast forward to the premiere of ITV’s Grantchester earlier this month. Norton plays an Anglican priest, Reverend Sidney Chambers, who finds himself involved in solving crimes, assisting the overworked Detective…

  • Supernatural Rewind: the Winchesters reel in a "Hook Man"

    26 Sep 2014 | 9:40 pm
"Hook Man" (Supernatural S0107) cold opens out of the clichéd (but fun) scary camp fire story that everyone has heard a million times. A dude takes his gal out into the middle of the woods to "neck" (if we're talking super old school parlance) or their car breaks down or some such. Then, one of a few things happens. Either the couple here's on the car radio that a bunch of psychopaths have broken out of the local mental hospital (this might be one of my favorites, and may well have been used in the classic film, Stand By Me). Then, wouldn't you know it, surprise surprise, the couple…

Quick Take: South Park, "Go Fund Yourself" "Washington Redskins totally gets people's attention." – Eric Cartman Review: South Park, "Go Fund Yourself" (S1801) I recall an epic road trip from many moons ago. One of my best pals and I took a five-week sojourn across this great nation, slicing across monstrous miles and trekking along the groaning highway (hat tip to Mr. Jack Kerouac there, in one of my all time favorite phrases of his from On the Road) through the south, stopping wherever whim and friends and family took us along the way, modest tastes (Denny's was our friend in many…

Quick Take: Below Deck, "She'd Better Not Be Saying" "Serving Adriennemakes me want to vomit in her face." – Kat Review: Below Deck, "She'd Better Not Be Saying" With most (okay, most) reality shows, you're always trying to contend with how many situations are contrived and to what extent the producers have manipulated situations to drive the drama or intended narrative. In the case of Adrienne's return, it doesn't matter in the slightest as it's pure ludicrous joy to see her back and causing havoc amongst her old co-workers. After drinking it up with boat guests and friends (and…

    23 Sep 2014 | 2:33 am
So, like many a TV geek and TV "civilian" alike, I checked out the pilot episodes of CBS' Scorpion and FOX's Gotham tonight. Both exhibit plenty of things to critique – plot holes, questionable casting choices, strange pacing and awkward story development – yet by broadcast television standards I found Scorpion and Gotham watchable enough to want to see more. And I consider that high praise indeed on the basis of what the vast majority of the fall TV lineup typically provides. But what I'm particularly focused on, and even fixated on perhaps, are two words that are shared among…

“Marry Me” had its work cut out for it, as it airs at the same time as the hit series “New Girl.” But after one episode, this new NBC show convinced me it’s more of a must-watch Tuesday night TV show. Let’s take a look at why you should be watching “Marry Me” instead of “New Girl.” The Lovely Lady Leads Zooey Deschanel definitely has that adorkable thing down, and I used to love Jess for being a living Disney princess with a ’50s housewife wardrobe. After days of teasing fans with confusing video stills, One Direction finally released the music video for their latest single “Steal My Girl.” Needless to say, everyone’s still confused. (But that’s not necessarily a bad thing!) With not much of a storyline beyond crazy director Danny DeVito assigning each member an expression to evoke, the 1D guys embark on their usual music video antics that we know and love. But what makes this video so weirdly funny is all the randomly added extras. There are sumo wrestlers, gymnasts, mimes, a marching band (with Liam as its leader), and even…

  • Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Cancelled After Mama June Allegations Surface

    Paul
    24 Oct 2014 | 10:36 am
While many may not realize the show still existed as its fifteen minutes of fame seemed to have passed, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo has been officially canceled by TLC. But it’s not because of low ratings or some other such business decision. Rather, the show was immediately axed after allegations surfaced that after June “Mama June” Shannon had divorced Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson, she had taken up with a man named Mark McDaniel. McDaniel is 53, and served ten years in prison for molesting an eight-year-old. The twist? The victim, who would be over 18 now,…
  • Why Caroline Forbes Is the Best Character on The Vampire Diaries

    Chris King
    24 Oct 2014 | 9:20 am
Sometimes it’s hard to pick out an actor or a character that truly stands above the the rest of the cast, especially on a series that heavily relies on the strength and depth of its ensemble. However, with The CW’s The Vampire Diaries, it’s not hard at all to choose who the show’s best character is: it’s clearly Caroline Forbes. While my opinion on Caroline and the show is in no way new, it was only reaffirmed by last night’s episode “Black Hole Sun,” which was completely Caroline-free. That was a little bit of a problem for me, as The…

The first official trailer for Halo: Nightfall debuted this week, and while it sounds like a graphic novel spin-off or a piece of DLC for the video game series, it’s actually a pretty interesting project. It’s a fully-fledged television miniseries, if you can still say “television” when it’s primarily airing on a video game console, the Xbox. It’s got a good pedigree in the form of executive produce Ridley Scott, who does not appear to simply be cashing a check and nodding in approval, as he’s reportedly had quite a bit of direct input in the show…
  • Supernatural Fanfiction Gives the Demon Dean Storyline a More Angst-Filled Ending

    Chris King
    24 Oct 2014 | 9:18 am
Spoilers ahead from this week’s episode of Supernatural… On Tuesday’s episode of Supernatural, “Soul Survivor,” we saw what appears the be end of the Demon Dean storyline that began in the final scene of Season 9. The first two episodes of Season 10 largely used Dean’s demonic transformation for laughs, as the older Winchester drank and played pool with Crowley, bedded random women he met at the bar, and even got up to sing a couple of songs during karaoke (and he sang them terribly, in case you didn’t see it, which was very funny). However, the third…

  • Viewers Should Trade in “New Girl” for “Marry Me”

“Marry Me” had its work cut out for it, as it airs at the same time as the hit series “New Girl.” But after one episode, this new NBC show convinced me it’s more of a must-watch Tuesday night TV show. Let’s take a look at why you should be watching “Marry Me” instead of “New Girl.” The Lovely Lady Leads Zooey Deschanel definitely has that adorkable thing down, and I used to love Jess for being a living Disney princess with a ’50s housewife wardrobe. However, the cutesy, Little Goody Two-Shoes act is starting to wear thin. It…

From Stereogum And I feel qualified to say this, because I am a former Led Zeppelin diehard. I’ve shared my opinions on the past on similar concepts, stating officially that I Am Not A Purist and that Older is Only Better Because We Were Younger. I don’t think that certain pieces of art are above being recreated or revised. I am strongly against the purist notion that a cover (even a bad one) ruins the integrity of a good original. I don’t even think that using a good song in a bad context harms the original. Good music, as with any art, stands well on its own, and thrives…

Was Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears a thief of dance?  (Warning, GIFS) I was watching a DVD given to me by old friends, Joanna and Irv.  It was a DVD collection of all of Tears for Fears’ videos, a thoughtful gift considering how many laughs Irv and I had shared over the dances of the new wave era.  The one that gave us endless chuckles was embedded in “Change,” an addictive but lyrically useless pop song that confused me for years until I realized that it was intentionally valueless. We spent lots of time trying to emulate the martial artistry in Roland’s arms.

My significant other downloaded some episodes of The Strain, a show I was interested in because of the horror and gore after they subjected the world to the eye-worm advertisement. People freaked out, so I was instantly interested.  I had no knowledge of the show other than the freakish gore part, hoping it might be a more sci-fi style American Horror Story with even creepier body horror.  All this is a big “yay” for me. Originally scheduled for September 26th, Netflix has removed all Discovery content from their streaming queue today, October 5th. They're losing TLC’s "Say Yes to the Dress" today as well. While it is part of a business deal with  Discovery moving over to Amazon, we wonder if Netflix' consistently bad uploads of Discovery's shows had anything to do with their decision. We often linked to Amazon's versions of these shows because episodes were…

I haven’t forgotten that I promised a follow up post for Kill The Moon, however, I am probably going to return to that post after the season ends, in order to include examples from the whole series. MRS PITT: Is there some sort of fancy dress thing on this evening? MAISIE: I don’t think so. Why do you ask? MRS PITT: Well, that fellow over there, dressed as a mummy monster thing. MAISIE: Who do you mean? I can’t see him. MRS PITT: You! You! Throw that man out of my dining car. It’s disgusting. WAITER: I’m sorry, Madam. Which man? MRS PITT: Which man?! I’ll have…

DOCTOR: I knew that eggs are not bombs. I know they don’t usually destroy their nests. Essentially, what I knew was that you would always make the best choice. I had faith that you would always make the right choice. CLARA: Honestly, do you have music playing in your head when you say rubbish like that? DOCTOR: It wasn’t my decision to make. I told you. CLARA: Do you know what? Shut up! I am so sick of listening to you! DOCTOR: Well, I didn’t do it for Courtney. I didn’t know what was going to happen. Do you think I’m lying? God’s omniscience (God as all…

Danny: It’s funny, you only really know what someone thinks of you when you know what lies they’ve told you. I mean you say you’ve seen wonders, you’ve seen amazing things and you kept them secret. From me. So what do you think of me, Clara? Clara had a myriad of reasons for why she kept her travels with the Doctor a secret: mainly because it sounds insane. How do you explain to someone that you occasionally travel through space and time with an alien with two hearts that looks human? How would one even begin that conversation? And even if Danny believed her or Clara voluntarily…

MADAME KARABRAXOS: You gave me this number. My name is Madame Karabraxos. I was once the wealthiest person in the Universe. I need your assistance.  I’m dying, with many, many regrets. But one, perhaps, you may be able to help me with. When I first saw this episode, I was a bit confused by the ending. Why did Madam Karabraxos suddenly have a change of heart? People don’t just wake up one day and say, “oh well I was a horrible person, now I need to right all of my wrongs.” Something dramatic must have happened to change her. However, on second viewing, I realized something…

Fear serves an important evolutionary purpose: namely survival. Fear enables us to mentally and physically discern threats and dangers and our body automatically begins acting in ways that will hopefully increase our chances of survival. As the Doctor explains to Rupert while they are confronted by what may be a monster, hiding under his bed sheet, fear can be good: DOCTOR: Are you scared? The thing on the bed, whatever it is, look at it. Does it scare you? RUPERT: Yes. DOCTOR: Well, that’s good. Want to know why that’s good? RUPERT: Why? DOCTOR: Let me tell you about scared. Your…

  • THE FLASH, 1.3 – 'Things You Can't Outrun' • the gasman cometh!

    Dan
    24 Oct 2014 | 3:00 am
This was the first episode of THE FLASH I'd describe as workmanlike; which isn't necessarily a bad thing for a show of this nature (expected to produce two dozen episodes a year), but if the majority of The Flash is going to be of similar quality, I won't be reviewing every episode.Worryingly, there's already a mild feeling of boredom whenever Barry (Grant Gustin) encounters a fellow metahuman, because the confrontations we've had feel largely the same. Unlike the superhero of companion series Arrow, Barry isn't very watchable when he's moving at normal speed. The selling point of The Flash…
  • GOTHAM, 1.5 – 'Viper' • the drugs do work

    Dan
    23 Oct 2014 | 2:30 am
The best hour of GOTHAM so far, and a sign this show could make a go of things. It's no coincidence it focused on the strongest aspect of the show (the machinations of Gotham's two biggest crime lords), and added super-powers to the equation. They even found a way to get young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) out of his mansion; although we still had Batman foreshadowing with Alfred (Sean Pertwee) commending his detective skills. I've been hard on this show, but maybe it's time to cut it some slack? The past few weeks have been fun. This week, there's yet another disgruntled ex-employee causing…
  • TV I've been watching lately...

    22 Oct 2014 | 2:30 am
We're fast approaching November and most of the new autumn shows have begun, plenty of old favourites are back, and the summer shows are a memory. But what am I enjoying watching every week, finding time to write about, or have given up on completely? Read on!THE AFFAIR (Showtime, season 1). It's been a great two-episode start to this new Showtime drama starring Dominic West and Ruth Wilson as extra-marital lovers, with a unique flashback format that also bisects each episode into opposing perspectives on the same events. Even without those narrative devices, I'd like this The Affair in terms…
  • THE WALKING DEAD, 5.2 – 'Strangers' • the last good man alive

    Dan
    21 Oct 2014 | 2:30 am
The premiere was thoroughly enjoyable, but had modest aims and was perhaps impossible for THE WALKING DEAD to get wrong after so much practice. The follow-up, "Strangers", was a better indication of what this fifth season's going to bring viewers, but obviously things are at a very early stage... although it's very promising that creepy Gareth (Andrew J. West), together with some of the other cannibals, survived last week's onslaught of walkers and Rick's (Andrew Lincoln) violent escape from their Terminus home. They're even scarier in the woods, stalking Rick's group and looking for…

    21 Oct 2014 | 2:00 am
While I'm likely to review a noteworthy episode, and will probably write about the fourth season in general once the finale airs, my weekly reviews of HOMELAND are done. This isn't a strict reflection of Homeland's quality just now (I'm quite enjoying it), just the fact older shows lose that indefinable quality that makes one eager to write about them. And I don't want to sit down and force myself to write hundreds of words about TV episodes I don't feel passionate about.I will continue to watch Homeland every week, but I don't think I have anything fresh and interesting to say about this…

We’ve all known for some time now that Orwell’s fabled Big Brother is among us and that most everything we do is observed in some fashion. Since its premiere in 2011 “Person of Interest” has used that as its central premise and shown us how a machine that scrutinizes that surveillance could interpolate that data to help a group of heroes save the common man. Last season a similar, yet more advanced, machine was brought online with much more utilitarian intentions and we’ve begun to see how that same data can be used in a much more malicious manner. Much like the never-seen Machine…

    22 Oct 2014 | 9:00 am
A few weeks back I wrote about my massive disappointment with the last season finale of “Castle” and how the new season premiere still left the show on tenuous ground with me. It’s been a few weeks since its return, so it’s time to re-evaluate whether or not “Castle” warrants continued viewing. The good news is that the most recent episode feels very much like the “Castle” of old. There was quite a bit of humor thanks to the antics of Mr. Nathan Fillion and also from the dynamic duo of Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever. Whereas Fillion’s Rick Castle gets to live up to his true…

When last May’s season finale of “Once Upon A Time” ended with the promise of bringing the characters of the hit film “Frozen” to Storybrooke there was the fear that it was too soon. All of the fairy tale characters depicted so far had been around for decades while Disney’s version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” was barely half a year old at that time. Even the least cynical of viewers had to be wondering if it was just an attempt to cash in on “Frozen”’s crazy success to try to boost the TV series’ ratings. We are now four episodes into the new…
  • ‘The Walking Dead’ Live Again

    info@lipulse.com
    14 Oct 2014 | 5:48 am
I’ll give “The Walking Dead” this much, each season it sure knows how to make an entrance. The latest premiere for season five was the most watched single episode in the history of cable television. That is a pretty impressive feat that certainly justifies the early renewal for season six that the show received last week. Unfortunately, I think this may send the wrong signal to the producers, namely that they are doing something right. Basically, I think the show has been falling apart ever since the end of its spectacular first season. The show began with six superb episodes, but then…

This week the CW delivers a one-two punch of super-heroics as we get the debut of “The Flash” and the third season premiere of “Arrow.” Late last year Forensics Investigator Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) appeared in two episodes of “Arrow.” At the end of the second episode Allen returned to Central City where he got caught up in an accident with an experimental particle accelerator. The pilot episode of the new series “The Flash” recaps that accident and then dives right into what happens next. Allen wakes up in the home of the accelerator, fabled S.T.A.R. Labs, nine months…
