  • Why Game of Thrones surprises us - Part 2

Duck for Cover - Film & TV Psychology
    20 Nov 2014 | 1:04 am
Previously on Game of Thrones...I discussed the common archetype of the hero and how George RR Martin uses our familiarity with this archetype as a form of misdirection.Part 2 looks at the archetype of the 'Lover' and the 'Innocent' and how Martin dangles hope for one character to tease the audience. The Lover is motivated by finding true love (see pretty much every Disney princess). They are also easily influenced by the approvals of others and fear being abandoned or alone. The Innocent is ignorant of the evil in the world. They always want to do the right thing and fear being punished…

  • NBC’s “Constantine”: Matt Ryan Is No Keanu Reeves

Fans of the comic series featuring John Constantine were optimistic when they got their first look at the new NBC show’s TV version of the character. Visually inspired by pop star Sting, the original Constantine was a Liverpool con man who used his devious mind as well as his magic to fight supernatural forces. While the 2005 movie strayed wildly with Keanu Reeves in the lead role, the actor’s larger-than-life image has cast a big shadow over the more faithful TV incarnation. The Towering Keanu One of the things that made Reeves so successful in film is his ability to fill the…

What's in a plot twist? Part of it's surprise. In the case of Game of Thrones, it's usually in the form of a sudden and brutal shock. Just when you thought you knew what was going to happen, writer George RR Martin throws a curve ball.To surprise a modern, savvy audience, you essentially need to be a master at misdirection. That is, get them to anticipate the direction of a story, set up all the pieces and clues, and then catapult the plot into a completely different direction. One way to play with an audience is to present them with familiar story archetypes. Game of Thrones and Story…

It’s a rare man who gets to attend his own funeral. It’s an even luckier man who gets to cheat his own death, dust his prints off the murder weapon, read his own eulogy, and rise to live again in another form. That’s what Stephen Colbert did Thursday night with “Stephen Colbert,” in a show that sent his bloviating host character — one of the greatest sustained performances in pop culture, TV or otherwise — off into TV eternity. And his final Colbert Report was both a sweet ending and a perfect summation of the show’s spirit — smart and…

Plain and simple, free speech lost a battle here. It may have been inevitable, after the massive cyberattack on Sony’s computer data was followed by violent threats against theaters. Writing in the New York Times, the screenwriter says that any reporter who is reprinting information released in a massive hack of Sony computers–seemingly as retaliation for The Interview, a Seth Rogen comedy about an assassination plot against the leader of North Korea–is “morally treasonous and spectacularly dishonorable.” Sorkin, as he admits, is an interested party: he’s writing a movie about Steve Jobs that’s the subject of some of the e-mails. I don’t hold that against…
  • REVIEW: Khan Job: Netflix’s Ludicrous Marco Polo

    James Poniewozik
    11 Dec 2014 | 9:00 am
If there is an equivalent in today’s TV business to the Mongol horde and its cavalry, it may well be Netflix and its algorithms. Not only has the streaming service’s recommendation engine threatened long-standing TV empires and conquered our video habits by sending us from binge-watch to binge-watch–“If you like this, you might like this”–but also, so the company says, it has allowed Netflix to use its copious data to precision-target an audience for its original shows. Marco Polo (first season debuts online Friday), the lush drama set in the 13th-century…

  • CNN Reports Hackers Sent Message to Sony: ‘You’ve Done the Right Thing’

    Mark Joyella
    19 Dec 2014 | 7:56 am
CNN is reporting hackers sent emails to top executives at Sony Thursday night congratulating the company on its “very wise” decision to cancel the release of “The Interview.” Brian Stelter reports the emails included the message “you’ve done the right thing.” The emails suggested information stolen during the hack could be released if Sony fails to ensure that the film is never seen: The hacker message is effectively a victory lap, telling the studio, “Now we want you never let the movie released, distributed or leaked in any form of, for…

In fact,  Couric often says that they “share a brain.” Couric is now the Yahoo News Global Anchor, so Maciulis has moved into the digital space where he is making a significant impact after only six months. TVNewser caught up with Maciulis during a busy week, as Couric prepared for an exclusive interview with embattled actor Stephen Collins.  TVNewser: You’ve been with Katie at various locations, three to be exact. How did you team up in the first place? Tony Maciulis: I was…
  • For the First Time, Broadcast Networks Shut Out of duPont Awards

    Mark Joyella
    18 Dec 2014 | 5:48 pm
Ever since 1968, when the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards arrived at Columbia, it’s been a pretty safe bet that each year, somebody at CBS News, ABC News or NBC News was going to take home a duPont. At least, until this year. For the first time, the legacy broadcast networks were not among the 2015 winners announced this week. ”They are exceptional and innovative reports about some of the most important issues of our time,” said NBC’s Cynthia McFadden in a video announcing the 2015 winners. The fourteen winners for 2015 include usual suspects like…

  • Beamly Wants To ‘Super-Charge’ Ads After Pivot ‘Step Change’

    Robert Andrews
    19 Dec 2014 | 2:57 am
The social TV app formerly known as “Zeebox” has ambitions to offer advertisers new experiences, after rebranding to “Beamly” earlier this year. First launched in 2011, Zeebox helped viewers learn and talk about shows during live broadcast. But it expanded to VOD and a greater female focus this year in its pivot. “When a drama is on, most people want to focus on the TV show – trying to force the second-screen experience on certain TV shows didn’t fit well,” new CEO Jason Forbes tells Beet.TV in this video interview. ”Feedback from both our…
  • Second Screens Yield Vital Data for TV Networks

    Daisy Whitney
    18 Dec 2014 | 4:45 pm
The next hurdle for second screen marketing lies in measuring consumer sentiment towards a TV show, says Alan Wolk, Chairman of Second Screen Society, in an interview with Beet.TV. That can be done by tapping into the treasure trove of data available via mobile phones that consumers use to interact with a show. “How do you measure these audiences? How do you measure the sentiment on social? Data and second screens let you engage with viewers. Who are these people? What do they like? What do they want?” he asks. By mining that information networks can then use it to inform…
  • Addressable Tools Will Drive Programmatic TV, Videology’s Scott Ferber

    Daisy Whitney
    17 Dec 2014 | 7:08 pm
Programmatic TV will be driven first by addressable tools, says Scott Ferber, Chairman and CEO of video advertising technology platform Videology, in an interview with Beet.TV. “The first step where programmatic and addressable will converge in the TV space is on the data side…understanding who is on the other end of the set-top box,” he says, adding that a smooth delivery process and better measurement will also help usher addressable TV into the programmatic arena. Already, programmatic buying has taken hold of digital advertising, and moving into TV is a natural next…

  • Out-Stream Gives Slate 10x Video Ad Boost

    Robert Andrews
    17 Dec 2014 | 4:12 am
CHICAGO — Webzine Slate may be producing some video of its own nowadays but, as a text specialist, the outlet may never make enough to satisfy booming advertiser demand for video ad inventory. That’s why the publisher is using InRead, an ad format from vendor Teads which allows sites to inject video ads between text paragraphs, even if pages don’t have video content on them. “We deliver about two million pre-rolls streams a month - by using Teads, we can increase our inventory closer to 15-to-20million impressions per month,” Slate publisher Anthony DeMaio…

  • The Last Five Years Releases Poster

    Marc Eastman
    17 Dec 2014 | 1:14 pm
In theaters and On Demand February 13th, The Last Five Years is hoping to give you something to add to your Valentine’s Day plans. Adapted from the hit musical, the film stars Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan, and for the uninitiated, it details their relationship as she sings songs from the end of their relationship backwards, and he gives you songs from the start forward. The trailer gives one the impression that this is a fairly niche endeavor, but oh if you’re in that niche, I suspect you’re in for a treat. How’s this one look to you? In this adaptation of the hit…

20th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Nominations Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Nominations It’s that time of year again, and while the internet is always going to overload with articles of snubs and surprises, this is actually a year that wasn’t especially difficult to predict. It may be somewhat surprising that Birdman managed 13 nominations for the CCMAs, leading all films, but the CCMA nominations (and Golden Globe nominations) in general are largely as expected. Rather than just supply the list of nominations, I’m going to compare the CCMAs with the Golden…

    16 Dec 2014 | 6:19 am
The Loft is hitting theaters January 23rd, and this might be the “flying under the radar” gem you don’t want to miss. Like most years, the buzz and attention of award season means that there is little room to focus on things that are coming your way in January. This one, based on the 2008 Belgian film, and starring Karl Urban and James Marsden, looks to be a solid offering for those looking for a bit of tension. Five married men rent a loft to be their secret spot for… whatever they might need a secret spot for, and oddly enough, things go wrong. It seemed like such a…

Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-Ray Review Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters with surprising force, based on the fact that it is a comic-book film based on characters virtually no one knows, and the Blu-Ray is here to repeat the frenzy. Part space opera, part comic adventure, the film is an unusual hybrid of elements, made all the more interesting by way of characters who aren’t going to be explained, and are themselves rather fantastic. Catch our podcast review of Guardians of the Galaxy here. The film introduces us, in rather spectacular fashion, to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who…

Against many odds, the freshman season of Fargo proved to be a wildly entertaining, dark, and twisted hit. Perhaps more so even than the original film. I mean, it caused us to forgive Colin Hanks for that Dexter nonsense he was a party to. • ‘Imitation Game’ star Benedict Cumberbatch talks Bletchley Park

    Bill Young
    18 Dec 2014 | 10:03 pm
Labeling it an ‘overwhelming experience’, Benedict Cumberbatch, star of The Imitation Game, talked recently about his filming the story of wartime code-breaker Alan Turing in the place where he actually lived and worked, Bletchley Park. It was Turing, the troubled genius mathematician, who spent the Second World War building an early computer that could crack encoded Nazi messages. Because of his work, he and his fellow codebreakers are credited with ending the war some two years earlier than expected. Set for a Christmas Day premiere in America, The Imitation Game has already…

If you are wondering what it would be like to be a part of the Crawley family and stay overnight at Highclere Castle, the setting for Downton Abbey, now is your chance…sort of. Beginning Valentine’s Day, the Highclere estate is offering guests the opportunity to access your inner-most Dowager Countess and stay the night in London Lodge, the castle’s Georgian Grade II-listed gatehouse. The gatehouse features two separate lodges, which are situated either side of the property’s heavy iron gates, and which each accommodate two guests. The lodge stay is self-catering and will be…

For the past two nights, Carnegie Hall was the place to be if you happen to find yourself as part of the growing number of individuals who are pretty much done with Christmas music at this point in the holiday season mainly because they have been playing it in stores since before Halloween. The perfect antidote was provided by none other than an original member of Monty Python, Eric Idle, who is also known for Spamalot, the brilliant stage musical version of the all-time classic Python film, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”. What could be better than a Monty Python inspired…

    15 Dec 2014 | 10:28 pm
The UK Christmas Day to New Year’s Day tradition of great telly just gets better and better with every passing year. Besides the usual obligatory specials from Eastenders, Coronation Street and Doctor Who to look forward to, in recent years those lucky ones to receive the BBC and ITV signal have been treated to specials from Call the Midwife, Downton Abbey and Miranda to name a few. Each year tops the last and 2014 is no exception. One of the centerpiece offerings this year will be on on Thursday, 1 January with the television adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic…
  • Worlds collide when SNL visits ‘A Hobbit Office’

    Bill Young
    14 Dec 2014 | 10:03 pm
When Martin Freeman (The Office, Hobbit, Sherlock, Fargo) stepped onto the 30 Rock stage to host Saturday Night Live this past weekend, it almost reminded me of my university days when SNL was so good, you didn’t even think about going out on Saturday night until it was over. Those were the days of John Belushi, Dan Ackroyd, Jane Curtin, Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, etc. This was the definition of must-see-tv. Not so much in recent years until Saturday, when the Sherlock star was centerstage at NBC’s Studio 8H for what could really prove to be like an SNL sketch from days past.

You can have “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” but that’s not what I’m waiting for. Each year, I anticipate the Christmas episode of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” with as much longing as a little kid who is awaiting the arrival of Kris Kringle on Christmas Eve. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of “SNL” this year, NBC is airing vintage episodes in addition to new shows. Earlier this month, we were treated to the “SNL Christmas Special” which highlighted about 25 of the most loved holiday…

All good things must come to an end – and so it is for my beloved “Cougar Town.” Jules and the rest of the gang will be raising their glasses for their final toast as the series winds to a close this spring. It seems like just yesterday we were following a cross-country bus tour to celebrate and save this wacky show and its kooky cast of characters. Now, on January 6, the show that TBS swooped in and saved will kick off its final season of 13 episodes. For me, “Cougar Town” was love at first sight. In honor of the show’s final bow, let’s take a look at the top five things…
  • NBC’s “Constantine”: Matt Ryan Is No Keanu Reeves

    Valerie David
    16 Dec 2014 | 1:44 pm
Fans of the comic series featuring John Constantine were optimistic when they got their first look at the new NBC show’s TV version of the character. Visually inspired by pop star Sting, the original Constantine was a Liverpool con man who used his devious mind as well as his magic to fight supernatural forces. While the 2005 movie strayed wildly with Keanu Reeves in the lead role, the actor’s larger-than-life image has cast a big shadow over the more faithful TV incarnation. The Towering Keanu One of the things that made Reeves so successful in film is his ability to fill the…

    12 Dec 2014 | 12:00 pm
FOX’s “Sleepy Hollow” writers have never been sure exactly what to do with Ichabod’s (Tom Mison) wife Katrina (Katia Winter). Her backstory paints her simultaneously as a peace-loving Quaker, a devious witch, and a society woman betrothed to Ichabod’s best friend. She scorned one Horseman and gave birth to another, and she recently carried baby demon Moloch to term. The more convoluted her character gets, the more I wish she had stayed in Purgatory. Ichabod’s Beloved In season one of “Sleepy Hollow,” we learned Katrina saved Ichabod after his…

After FOX resurrected 24 and its infamous protagonist for the highly anticipated (and pretty much critically beloved) limited series event 24: Live Another Day this past summer, there was a possibility that the show could return for a future miniseries-type event, or even the long-awaited film that the show’s producers have been talking about since the end of 24‘s eighth season. There’s so much greed, violence, and corruption out there that it’s hard not to become enveloped by it all and forget that there are actually good people and good things in this world that we can turn to. The acting has been spot on, the multi-layered storylines have been intriguing, the setting and mood was compelling. But the end was a crashing disappointment. The big twist that Stella had developed a weird thing for the serial killer Spector was not so much a revelation as a breathtaking letdown.Gillian Anderson as DSI Stella Gibson and Jamie Dornan as Paul Spector had deservedly won plaudits and huge attention for their performances in the lead roles, but as the series concluded last night it felt as though The Fall had failed to…

  • 5 of the Best “Saturday Night Live” Skits that Are Burned in Our Brains

    Elle Lamboy
    18 Dec 2014 | 3:32 pm
  • Saying Farewell to “Cougar Town” on TBS

    Rebecca Edwards
    18 Dec 2014 | 12:21 pm

    Valerie David

    12 Dec 2014 | 10:15 am
“The Walking Dead” only gives us a few details about Noah (Tyler James Williams). We know he is angry about being separated from his family, but the show leaves many questions about his background unanswered. What We Do Know and What We Don’t We know Noah was trapped at Grady Memorial Hospital as an orderly after being captured by the police. He tells Beth (Emily Kinney) his mother, father, and uncle initially survived the zombie apocalypse, but they became separated. After his uncle disappeared, Noah and his father tried to find him. However, their plans were destroyed by the police…

    5 Oct 2014 | 4:52 pm
Originally scheduled for September 26th, Netflix has removed all Discovery content from their streaming queue today, October 5th. This includes many shows that we've repeatedly posted about being badly out of order like Mythbusters, Whale Wars, and Dirty Jobs. They're losing TLC’s "Say Yes to the Dress" today as well. While it is part of a business deal with  Discovery moving over to Amazon, we wonder if Netflix' consistently bad uploads of Discovery's shows had anything to do with their decision. We often linked to Amazon's versions of these shows because episodes were…

    26 Oct 2014 | 2:10 pm
Western society’s emphasis on the individual has created an understanding of identity that does not acknowledge the importance of relationships or societal context in shaping who we are. “Be who you are despite what others think/say/do.” “Find the real you!” “Get in touch with your inner self” are messages that bombard us on social media and which form the foundation of the self-help industry. While of course it is vital that we do not become overly dependent on others to define our self-worth the reality is that our identity is formed, at least in part, by those around us. We…

  • Review: Channel 4's BLACK MIRROR – WHITE CHRISTMAS

    Dan
    17 Dec 2014 | 9:20 am
It's hard to say which was the most exciting thing about this feature-length edition of Charlie Brooker's BLACK MIRROR; the fact the show's been given a Christmas special, or that its growing acclaim overseas resulted in Mad Men's Jon Hamm having an extensive role. Both were equally stimulating before a single frame of the show had been seen, but I'm pleased "White Christmas" managed the difficult trick of making an extended episode with an intertwined narrative work. It's just a shame that, if I'm completely honest, only a few elements of this special achieved the highs I expect from the…
  • Why is there a WALKING DEAD spin-off?

    Dan
    17 Dec 2014 | 3:00 am
Answer: . AMC have a phenomenon on their schedule, but the cash cow only produces 16 episodes a year, which they split into two batches to try and make it feel more substantial. A spin-off (sorry, "companion" series) will help keep THE WALKING DEAD universe on-air for twice as long, while benefiting from fresh characters and a different location. It also helps that this new series (codenamed COBALT) won't be following an established comic-book's lead, which will mean no spoilers and a less predictable direction. Here's what we know:The Walking Dead's creator, Robert Kirkman, is very involved.

    14 Dec 2014 | 10:01 am
Martin Freeman (The Office, The Hobbit) was the guest emcee of this past weekend's SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, and the highlight was the sketch I've embedded above. It's beautifully simple: what if the characters of Peter Jackson's Middle-earth saga were employees of an Office-style mockumentary? Freeman amalgamates Bilbo Baggins and Tim Canterbury from his two biggest pop-culture hits, with support from Bobby Moynihan (Gandalf/David Brent), Taran Killam (Gollum/Gareth), Kyle Mooney (Legolas), and Kate McKinnon (Tauriel/Dawn). It's rare for a SNL sketch to make me laugh, but this one managed it.

As 2015 quickly approaches, so do a few new TV series. Mid season shows generally serve the purpose of filling out a Network’s schedule after other shows are either cancelled, put on hiatus or end their ordered run. Quite often they turn out to be hits and return for full runs the following season. Here are the new series that I think will catch on and stick around. ABC has a plan to keep you deeply enmeshed in the Marvel Universe when “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” go on break for the winter. Premiering January 6th, “Agent Carter” will show us the further adventures of Peggy…

As the year comes to a close, it is time to look back at the first part of the 2014 Fall TV Season. This year it seems that the Networks have been restrained on dropping the axe on low-performing series as there has been relatively few cancellations so far. As more and more people are choosing to watch shows on their own schedule, those concerned with ratings are looking at the long game as opposed to how many view the first broadcast of an episode. Having said all that, here is what caught my eye this Fall. As you may be tired of reading, I had developed a love/hate viewership with…

There have been some who have questioned some of the real-life O’Brien’s claims, but that shouldn’t take away from the show itself. If you’ve been reading this column for any length of time you will most assuredly know that character is of paramount importance to me when it comes to visual storytelling. Coupled with that is the acting ability of the professionals inhabiting those fictional people. The best story in the world completely falls apart if the characters and the actors portraying them aren’t convincing enough. However, terrifically acted, layered characters can raise up even the most mundane story and make it something special. CBS’ veteran cop drama “Blue Bloods” is almost an embarrassment of riches…

  • New Bond film hooks us in with nostalgia

    7 Dec 2014 | 2:01 am
The new James Bond film looks like it might be jumping back in time. It's called, Spectre, which was the criminal organisation from the early Connery films (remember the dude with the white cat?). So, why do new films end up going back in time to revisit old ideas?  Batman Begins took us back to Batman's origins. Star Trek (2009) introduced us to the early days of Captain Kirk. Superman recently returned to Krypton in the Man of Steel  and James Bond has saved the day in 24 films. If you prefer your Bond stirred not shaken, you might like to see…
  • Star Wars 7 trailer and its character archetypes

    30 Nov 2014 | 12:35 am
Although it be a bit premature, it's often easy to work out the character archetypes from a trailer. Archetypes are universal characters we see over and over again in stories (see my analysis of archetypes in Game of Thrones here). What universal characters can we expect from the new Star Wars based on the trailer that was launched on Friday? Here are some predictions. The Regular Guy: Guy in stormtrooper armour The Stormtroopers are the working class or 'regular guys' of the Star Wars universe so it wouldn't be surprising to see one thrown into a more complicated world like with…
  • The top neurotic moments of George Costanza

    26 Nov 2014 | 2:56 am
"They're men with jobs, Jerry!" George Costanza is one of the most memorable TV characters. We laugh at his expense but, perhaps, we are laughing at something we see in ourselves. This 'something' is what psychologists like to call 'neuroticism'. But what is this exactly? Let's explore some neurotic characteristics with George Costanza. Emotional Stability Neurotic people tend to be up and down. They can be easily frustrated, annoyed, and quick to panic. Neurotic people can also be prone to feeling deflated and depressed in the face of obstacles. They may also be prone to losing their…
  • Why Game of Thrones surprises us - Part 2

  • Why Game of Thrones surprises us - Part 1

    16 Nov 2014 | 2:11 am
What's in a plot twist? Part of it's surprise. In the case of Game of Thrones, it's usually in the form of a sudden and brutal shock. Just when you thought you knew what was going to happen, writer George RR Martin throws a curve ball.To surprise a modern, savvy audience, you essentially need to be a master at misdirection. That is, get them to anticipate the direction of a story, set up all the pieces and clues, and then catapult the plot into a completely different direction. One way to play with an audience is to present them with familiar story archetypes. Game of Thrones and Story…
