The best thing about Tim Cook's coming out was what it was not. It did not come as the result of some sex scandal perhaps involving an employee. It was not an embarrassing disclosure after being caught in some public restroom or a park. It was not a grudging coming out after years of very public denials and the usual "my personal life is private" protestations. It did not even come with any grand pretensions to being a catalyst for changing hearts and minds in an acrimonious debate about same-sex marriage or discrimination laws. He was not getting some kind of tech equivalent of a Golden…

    30 Oct 2014 | 6:06 am
My column in this week’s print TIME (subscription required) is about a couple of big developments in TV this month that are both very different and closely related. The first is the unveiling of Simpsons World, the online gorge-a-thon of every episode of The Simpsons ever made. The second is the decision of HBO and CBS to offer their programming through streaming apps, by subscription, without paying for cable. There’s a lot of talk in the TV business right now about “unbundling”–the idea of consumers buying more of the programming they now get in a giant,…

Some hatchlings are eaten by sharks. Others scamper to shore and carried off by seagulls. Only a hardy few make it. Just so, when I see the new network pilots, there are many I know I’m done with after one episode. Others go on a wait-and-see list, but as the weeks pass, I drop one and another off the list, from the truly bad to fine-but-the not-good-enough-to-make-time-for. I’m left with a few survivors on my season…

I liked the pilot of black-ish a lot. But–as often happens with sitcom pilots–I wondered how the show would sustain the premise over a series. Would it, on the one hand, be a string of variations on “Is our family black enough?” questions? Or, on the other hand, would it settle in and become another ABC family comedy, with hijinks and conflicts and special holiday episodes? Over its first few episodes, though, black-ish has shown that at best, it can be something more nuanced and rewarding than either. “Crime and Punishment,” the show’s riskiest…

Ironman, you have met your Halloween costume match. Haden Crews, a 9-year-old Lake City, FL boy decided to pass on the superhero trend this year, and dressed up as “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir instead. Haden’s mom made the mic flag and press pass. He says he watches “World News Tonight” whenever he can, and told Muir today that the show should do more stories on the lava flow in Hawaii. And if it doesn’t, next year he’ll go as Scott Pelley. (We kid) Haden’s also upset that Muir doesn’t still do weekends. New Career Opportunities…
  • Beef Between Rachel Maddow, Stuart Varney?

    Brian Flood
    31 Oct 2014 | 1:52 pm
Rachel Maddow of MSNBC recently took on Fox Business’ Stuart Varney for his piece on falling gas prices hurting President Obama. Maddow mentions the current “unusually low” gas prices and points out that conservative media typically blames Obama when gas prices are high. She even used a “screenshot” from Varney’s show to demonstrate her point. Well, Varney fired back this afternoon on his show, saying Maddow “got it wrong” and called Maddow’s commentary a “factless rant.” He went on to say, “she twisted the truth to fit her…

  • Branded Content Needs Measurement Strategy from Start

    Daisy Whitney
    30 Oct 2014 | 7:55 pm
CHICAGO — Brands should development a measurement plan when embarking on branded content, says  Tom Weeks, SVP and Group Brand Director at SMG’s LiquidThread  in an interview with Beet.TV. Knowing what to count from the start can set expectations for branded content campaigns, especially when working with a partner. “Partner with the right companies and figure out how they’re going to push it out. From a brand equity standpoint, what is the power your brand brings to the table? How did [the campaign] drive business, leads, and results?” he says, laying out…
  • Weather Company Pairs Marketers With Moods

    Daisy Whitney
    30 Oct 2014 | 7:54 pm
CHICAGO — Weather often affects consumers’ moods, and that means it can impact purchase behavior, says DJ Reali, SVP MultiPlatform Sales at the Weather Company, in an interview with Beet.TV. As such, the Weather Company often looks to pair consumer data with weather conditions to deliver targeted ads. For instance, Weather Company has worked with Pantene to deliver ads based on humid conditions, since humidity can be a driver for buying hair products. ”We have a data and analytics platform, and we can mash that with sales data or activity data to find the right trigger.
  • Enhance the Experience, SMG’s Hoffman Advises for Branded Content

    Daisy Whitney
    30 Oct 2014 | 1:34 pm
CHICAGO —  Placement on a site and or media channel is vital to ensuring branded content actually reaches consumers and can be viewed, says Jonathan Hoffman, President at ZeroDot/President Experience Design at Starcom MediaVest Group, in an interview with Beet.TV. In addition, brands should think about how to create a value exchange with their content. “We need to make sure we aren’t talking to ourselves. Don’t presume anyone cares. Because people are choosing to engage, think about what they might want that will enhance their experience,” Hoffman says. He…
  • No More Ratecards? Sky’s West On Addressable Ad Pricing

    Robert Andrews
    29 Oct 2014 | 10:39 am
LONDON — If every TV ad campaign can be individually targeted, what good is fixed ad pricing anymore? UK satellite and telco provider BSkyB, which this year launched its AdSmart addressable ad initiative, envisages a spectrum of prices for different advertisers. “The conversation has moved on from being a commoditized rate that is transparent for all advertisers to being a bespoke tailored campaign in terms of attributes, and a bespoke tailored cost to discuss on the back of those attributes,” West, deputy director of ad sales division Sky Media, tells Beet.TV in this video…

For serious news video, forget Vine’s microscopic content, says the co-creator of Huffington Post’s live streaming video network, HuffPost Live. “The average video being watched on mobile devices is getting longer,”HuffPost live president and co-creator Roy Sekoff tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “A lot of people have made the bet on micro nuggets – you’re not going to tell people what they really need to know from a news perspective in six seconds, or even 15 seconds or a minute and a half.” Sekoff tells Beet.TV HuffPost Live, which mixes…

  • Ex Machina Trailer Is The Coolest Thing In Years, Nevermind The Film

    Marc Eastman
    30 Oct 2014 | 2:48 pm
Sci-fi stories that play with “jargon” are always suspect, because they immediately have a certain air about them that suggests they went to school, you didn’t, and they are very interested in the fact. So, when Ex Machina oversells its premise by making sure it says “Turing Test” a lot, you have to raise an eyebrow. But, few movies have quashed concerns with a trailer better than this one. A three-person show, with apparently virtually no supporting characters, the film centers on Oscar Isaac as a super-wealthy recluse who has built an A.I. (Alicia Vikander),…
  • A Most Violent Year Debuts Deceptively Calm Poster

    Marc Eastman
    30 Oct 2014 | 2:02 pm
It may be time for focusing on the truly giant releases that are coming to theaters soon, but there are a lot of films you don’t want to get lost in the shuffle, and one of them is A Most Violent Year. Writer-Director J.C. Chandor‘s name may not be one that you immediately recognize, but he directed last year’s All is Lost with Robert Redford, and now he is Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain in a film that focuses on the rampant crime and corruption in New York City in the early ’80s. It looks to be a film that people will be talking about for a very long time, and you…
  • Syfy’s 12 Monkeys Trailer Will Lock You In

    Marc Eastman
    30 Oct 2014 | 9:20 am
12 Monkeys is coming to Syfy on January 16th, and you can finally get a look at what’s coming. Obviously inspired by the film, and the massive cult following that has continued to grow over the years, the show follows a time traveler who comes back to prevent the plague that has decimated the human race and left the planet in chaos. The trailer lets you in on the fact that things are probably a lot more complicated than they seem, and it may be that no one actually knows what’s going on. If the trailer is any accurate guide, this is going to turn into one of the most interesting…
  • Constantine TV Review

    Marc Eastman
    29 Oct 2014 | 1:18 pm
Constantine TV Review (NBC) The world of sci-fi television is growing by leaps and bounds, and the comic-related realm is especially skyrocketing as of late, but even in the new era of television, Constantine is a massive gamble. A weird hybrid of film noir-esque motifs and traditions, and the wildest fantasy filled with demons, angels and everything in between, it’s a story tailor made for self-professed comic geeks. Superheroes are one thing, but Constantine, popular as it is within its own circle, is a niche in a niche, and it’s in a small box in the corner of that room…
  • Syfy Sneaking Up On You With Mutant World November 8th

    Marc Eastman
    28 Oct 2014 | 10:35 am
In a decidedly rare movie these days, Syfy is letting you in on one of its original movies that’s less than two weeks away. There isn’t much to know at this point, beyond the fact that there’s some potential to the concept, but at least we know who we’ll be watching. Sci-Fi fans might want a little more info on exactly what “mutant” means, because it might turn out all too similar to “zombie,” but if you’re looking for a slick, popcorn adventure, having people emerge from their bunkers ten years post apocalypse gives you a lot of options.

  • Christopher Nolan Hasn’t Ruled Out A Return To Superhero Films

    Penn Collins
    31 Oct 2014 | 11:30 am
Christopher Nolan, amid all this Interstellar hubbub, took a moment to assure all the fan boys out there that he hasn’t ruled out returning to the genre of superhero films at some point in the future. Of course, this is hardly a guarantee, but it’s easy to see how Nolan was drawn to the siren call of Batman. He got a bigger audience than he’s ever seen, he got a bigger budget, and he peppered the film with his favorite actors. Heres’ what he had to say about it: “I think I had a great experience with the superhero genre and got to explore a lot of things, but it was…

December 18, 2014. Mark your calendars if you’re the type of person that a) really likes Stephen Colbert, and b) has a calendar that you can actually write on. That date marks the final episode of The Colbert Report. Following that night, Stephen Colbert will revert to the abyss before re-emerging in 2015 as a wholesome, non-satirical everyman to take over for David Letterman. So there ya go. The end is in sight. Honestly, I’m excited to see what Stephen Colbert can do when he drops the affectations and just is himself. I was afraid that he would develop into some sociopath if he…

Hoping to exploit the overlapping fan bases of “people with money to crowdsource films” and ‘people who love to be traumatically disturbed,” Rob Zombie will be turning to the masses to fund his next film, set on Halloween, 31. Deadline is saying the film “involves five carnival workers kidnapped the night before Halloween and challenged to survive a deadly game called 31.” That…that sounds like a Rob Zombie film all right. Rather than use a more general crowdsourcing platform, Mr. Zombie will be using AFM, the American Film Market, which, as the name…

Not sure where the groundswell of support came from for this, but HBO has decided that, even though Hello Ladies had terrible ratings during its latter episodes, they wanted to give it a proper sendoff. So on November 22nd, we’re getting a Hello Ladies movie, to say goodbye to the Stephen Merchant character we never really enjoyed watching in the first place. What’s most odd about this news is that it just broke last night, the same time I saw a billboard for the movie. Was the billboard in West Los Angeles their press release? Is the marketing push behind this being coordinated…

    Jared Jones
    31 Oct 2014 | 9:57 am
By Jared Jones You know, while getting blackout drunk on Evan Williams Apple Orchard Liquor and watching Halloween 4 last night, I noticed something: That Michael Myers feller is hard ta kill! Whether he was being shot, stabbed, run over, shot, stabbed, or shot, Myers never stayed down for long, and boy oh boy was he mad when he got to waking up, I tell you what! But it was shortly after Halloween 4 ended and Halloween 5 began that the true revelation came: All of the Halloween moves — from the 1978 classic to that one with Busta Rhymes — are riddled with inaccuracies. Contradictions.

Agent Grant Ward was once Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s least interesting character. With his chiseled jaw and nonsense demeanor, Ward was kind of a killjoy, the stereotypical good guy– slap a pair of glasses on his face and he could have been Clark Kent. Then season one entered its second act and Ward was revealed to […]

Unfortunately they begin to rot less than a week after carving so be sure to take plenty of pictures. You can experiment with ways of preserving them but I find nothing works better than a nice photo. Some chefs that I have carved for put lemon juice on the faces to help slow down the natural molding process that will occur. Picking out the right pumpkin is very important. You need a pumpkin with a thick wall. To get this kind you will have to choose one that is…

    Bill Young
    31 Oct 2014 | 10:12 pm
With the recent Death Comes to Pemberley, BBC and PBS viewers were reacquainted with Jane Austen…sort of. Now, going 180 degrees in the opposite direction, comes the latest ‘revisit’ with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies starring Downton Abbey‘s Lily James, Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey. Yes, James has been a bit preoccupied with finding a husband in 1920s society then Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, but she now turns her attention to battling zombies, complete with period costume bonnets, swords and knives as shown from this…

Seems rather appropriate, it being Halloween and all, to give folks a few options tonight that go beyond the traditional trick-or-treat phenomenon where you can possibly cross paths with those that have yet to ‘cross-over’… The London Underground is now over 150 years old and stretches over 250 miles of track underneath the city of London. One of the greatest places to experience a bit of haunted London just might be right under your nose…or feet. While the rail network was being built, there were countless bodies, graves and even plague pits discovered. Laying the…

With only 3 episodes left (2 plus the Christmas special), what could Downton Abbey creator/writer, Julian Fellowes, possibly be thinking? As if the death of Lady Sybil wasn’t almost too much to take during series 2, he provided the ultimate kick to the stomach on Christmas Day in the series 3 finale by ending Matthew Crawley’s time at Downton. With the simple phrase of “Benedict Cumberbatch filming something special for BBC One and BBC Two” much of the UK went into orbit. Last night, the ‘project’ was unveiled just before the premiere broadcast of The Missing, which stars James Nesbitt and Frances O’Conner in the story of a couple whose lives fall apart after their five-year-old son Oliver is abducted on a family holiday to France in 2006.

With “American Horror Story”s horrible clown terrorizing TV viewers everywhere, it’s time to take a look at TV clowns over the years. Have we always been afraid of these made-up, smiling jesters or has AHS finally destroyed our last shred of clown innocence? If you’re like me, clowns have always made you just the tiniest bit squeamish. But it’s not fair to say they’re all bad. In the spirit of clown brotherhood, I’ve ranked TV’s most memorable clowns from the most enjoyable to the most terrifying. 1. Homey D. ABC’s “Manhattan Love Story” just became the first casualty of the fall season, meaning we’ll never get to see Peter driving that sex car of his. There’s more to Amazon’s new web series “Transparent” than meets the eye. Teased as a chance to see Jeffrey Tambor (the patriarch of the Bluth clan) in drag, this show is not a spectacle but rather a tender, humorous look at a truly modern family dealing with the wacky world of the 21st century. The show follows Mort/Maura Pfefferman (Tambor) and his devastatingly dysfunctional family as they take a good, hard look at themselves for possibly the first time ever. The catalyst for this scrutiny is Maura’s decision to finally live as the woman she’s always known she was. There is…

The CW has amassed a pretty solid line-up of shows these days, created big fanbases that watch one, two or all of them, if they have time during the week. Though most of them are standalone shows, Supernatural, Jane the Virigin, The 100 and Reign (the last of which may be the weak link and not survive another  year), four of their major shows are pairs. That would be Arrow and its spin-off The Flash, and The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals. While I think Arrow and The Flash are still in a pretty good place, only 3 and 1 seasons into their lifespans respectively, The Vampire…

  • The Best Worst Clowns on Cable

    Rebecca Edwards
    31 Oct 2014 | 8:51 am
With “American Horror Story”s horrible clown terrorizing TV viewers everywhere, it’s time to take a look at TV clowns over the years. Have we always been afraid of these made-up, smiling jesters or has AHS finally destroyed our last shred of clown innocence? If you’re like me, clowns have always made you just the tiniest bit squeamish. But it’s not fair to say they’re all bad. In the spirit of clown brotherhood, I’ve ranked TV’s most memorable clowns from the most enjoyable to the most terrifying. 1. Homey D. Clown My favorite, and definitely the least creepy and stabby of the…

ABC’s “Manhattan Love Story” just became the first casualty of the fall season, meaning we’ll never get to see Peter driving that sex car of his. We’ll also never find out if he’s a fan of Dana’s “pity panties.” But I’m not going to miss “Manhattan Love Story” because I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to find out when Peter and Dana would finally defeat fate and test-drive that sex car. I’m going to miss it because it had a sweetness that other TV romantic comedies are lacking. I love the assertive,…

I spend most of my 9-5 trying to impress people I would never socialize with outside of the office, so I’m thrilled when I get to choose who I surround myself with off the clock. This includes who I give my time to when watching TV. After all, if I wouldn’t want to grab a beer with the characters, what’s the point? I tried hanging out with Jess Day from “New Girl,” but she was way too kooky for me and Penny from “Big Bang Theory” was too much of an airhead. Olivia Pope from “Scandal”? Too put-together. I was on the verge of giving up my quest for new TV friends altogether…

  • Amazon’s “Transparent” Is Dangerous and Breathtaking

    Rebecca Edwards
    27 Oct 2014 | 8:46 am
There is…

From Stereogum And I feel qualified to say this, because I am a former Led Zeppelin diehard. I’ve shared my opinions on the past on similar concepts, stating officially that I Am Not A Purist and that Older is Only Better Because We Were Younger. I don’t think that certain pieces of art are above being recreated or revised. I am strongly against the purist notion that a cover (even a bad one) ruins the integrity of a good original. I don’t even think that using a good song in a bad context harms the original. Good music, as with any art, stands well on its own, and thrives…

Was Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears a thief of dance?  (Warning, GIFS) I was watching a DVD given to me by old friends, Joanna and Irv.  It was a DVD collection of all of Tears for Fears’ videos, a thoughtful gift considering how many laughs Irv and I had shared over the dances of the new wave era.  The one that gave us endless chuckles was embedded in “Change,” an addictive but lyrically useless pop song that confused me for years until I realized that it was intentionally valueless. We spent lots of time trying to emulate the martial artistry in Roland’s arms.

    26 Oct 2014 | 2:10 pm
Western society’s emphasis on the individual has created an understanding of identity that does not acknowledge the importance of relationships or societal context in shaping who we are. “Be who you are despite what others think/say/do.” “Find the real you!” “Get in touch with your inner self” are messages that bombard us on social media and which form the foundation of the self-help industry. While of course it is vital that we do not become overly dependent on others to define our self-worth the reality is that our identity is formed, at least in part, by those around us. We…

The set-up's rather good, with twentysomething Ignatius "Ig" Perrish (Daniel Radcliffe) dealing with the aftermath of his girlfriend Merrin's (Juno Temple) murder in a small logging town where everyone believes he killed her, and only avoided jail thanks to a high-priced lawyer. Then things take an unusual turn when Ig wakes up to discover horns protruding from his forehead, that give him the…

Last season a similar, yet more advanced, machine was brought online with much more utilitarian intentions and we’ve begun to see how that same data can be used in a much more malicious manner. The good news is that the most recent episode feels very much like the “Castle” of old. All of the fairy tale characters depicted so far had been around for decades while Disney’s version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” was barely half a year old at that time. Even the least cynical of viewers had to be wondering if it was just an attempt to cash in on “Frozen”’s crazy success to try to boost the TV series’ ratings. We are now four episodes into the new…

  • Sleepy Hollow: Parish & Cipher Halloween Commercial

    TV Juriste
    29 Oct 2014 | 4:42 pm
This is too hilarious not to share. The best part about this commercial for Henry-Jeremy’s law firm, Parish & Cipher, is the list of possible problems scrolling as he speaks. Our favorites: Neighbors’ music convincing you to kill? Possessed daughter murdered a priest? Succubus attempted to suck your soul? Pizza delivered in over 30 minutes? Your son’s doll framed for murder? Divorcing a wife who’s really a witch? Enjoy! For additional Fox Sleepy Hollow videos, click here.

Spirit of the Goat, Part I Ten years ago, a masked murderer with the last name Milky, but who preferred to be called the Spirit of the Goat, terrorized Gotham, killing the first-born child of the elite one-percenters of Gotham. (Is it our imagination or is the Spirit of the Goat’s mask very similar to the mask, Batman eventually will wear?) Back then, Bullock’s partner was a guy named Dix. During a search of Milky’s house, the two of them discovered Shelley, a dead rich girl whose body was hanging from the ceiling surrounded by freshly-lit candles. They figured the murderer must…

What do you think of this tweet from a Sleepy Hollow insider? With ratings slipping, we were surprised to see this tweet yesterday from Katia Winter, one of Sleepy Hollow‘s series regulars:   To all #ichabbie fans out there, may your dreams come true. It’s been a good run! http://t.co/IZlWHjrAyl #SleepyHollow — Katia Winter (@katia_winter) October 28, 2014 Was it just a bad attempt at humor? A divisive PR tactic that could backfire? A passive aggressive slap at #Ichabbie fans? Let us know what you think in the comments section.   **Disclaimer: Here at TV Juriste,…

Ever since we learned what Terminus was all about, fans have been itching to see Rick (Andrew Lincoln) dole out a dose of justice his way and cut down ring leader Gareth (Andrew J. West).   This week he was taken out to the delight of all! Last week the episode ended with Gareth and his brood of cannibals chomping on Bob’s (Lawrence Gillian, Jr.) leg after taking him from the church. The gang realizes he’s missing, along with Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride), which sent alarm bells ringing!  As Rick and company scramble to figure out what happened, they confront…
