Today's News: Our Take - Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino: "I'm the Reality King"
3 Feb 2010 | 7:00 pmWhile Jersey Shore was MTV's recent breakout show, (its finale scored a record-breaking 4.8 million viewers), Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino certainly was the series' breakout star. He made a name for himself, literally, from the first episode with his third-person talk, "creeping" on housemate Sammi, and coining his daily routine — "GTL" (gym, tan, laundry). TVGuide.com spoke with him about how the show, and his body, is all real, what's next for him, and more. Today's News: Our Take - Biggest Loser's John: "You Learn on the Ranch It Has to Be About You"
3 Feb 2010 | 2:33 pmEntering the Biggest Loser ranch as the heaviest team in history was not the greatest record to set, but twins James and John Crutchfield — weighing in at 485 and 484, respectively — were determined to shed the pounds and become the second twin ever to win the Loser grand prize. Although they each lost 23 pounds in the first week, James was eliminated, leaving he and his brother "floored," John tells TVGuide.com. "Those were great numbers and we definitely expected to be there until the end, so it was a big shock." Read More >Other Links From TVGuide.com Biggest LoserJames… -
Today's News: Our Take - Biggest Loser's Migdalia Reveals the Best Advice She Got from Trainers
27 Jan 2010 | 2:12 pmBiggest Loser's Green Team may have began the competition strong by winning Week 1's task, but they soon faced challenge after challenge. By the third week, Migdalia Sebren, 28, walked out of the gym — and almost the show — when Jillian pushed her beyond her emotional limits. A week later, Migdalia and her mother Miggy were hit with a 2-pound disadvantage. Even without that hit, their meager weight loss that week — Migdalia shed 4 pounds and Miggy only 1 — would have put them at risk for elimination anyway. What Kate Does
9 Feb 2010 | 5:27 amThe premiere from last week proved to perpetuate the same theme that most Lost season-starters have done in years past – provide half-answers to a few questions and create a ton of new ones. It would seem this season will lead us on two distinct paths – the path where detonating the hydrogen bomb “worked” in that it prevented Flight 815 from crashing. Path two will be back on the Island, where all of our favorite characters are now in the same timeline and some type of huge conflict is looming. It will be interesting to see how the paths converge and which reality… -
Lost – The Final Season, “LA X”
2 Feb 2010 | 6:15 amThe premiere of Lost tonight, in its 6th and final season, includes three hours of entertainment beginning at 8 PM EST. Hour 1 will effectively be a recap, the kind that we have grown accustomed to over the years, to refresh our memories on the peril in which our favorite characters will find themselves in at the beginning of Episode 1, which starts at 9 PM. Due to the WGA strike from two years ago, we’ll get two additional hours this season, in the form of a two hour premiere and what I presume will be a two hour finale. So, given we’ll get two full hours of new material tonight… -

Howard Stern gets media to believe that he's up for "judging that fucking karaoke contest"
9 Feb 2010 | 6:55 amHoward Stern caused the media to freak out yesterday by indicating that he was interested in replacing Simon Cowell on American Idol. Or is he just trying to get attention like every other person who's floating their name for the position? On his show yesterday, Howard said, "There's not a better job on the planet than judging that fucking karaoke contest." But Howard also qualified his interest a lot, saying things such as, "It might be possible; we'll see. They'd have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough," and said, "What a cush job -- $100 million for four months. -

But this season, Courtney said she wants to "see if I can be a little better in the physical part of it and not always feel so defeated before the fact, and maybe I can compete with… -

A Games in our hemisphere means more live programming than usual, some of it even in prime time for those viewers in the east. And it begins with the opening ceremonies Friday (NBC, 7:30 p.m.), which

Ghost Whisperer: Dead on Arrival
8 Feb 2010 | 2:47 pmShows like The Ghost Whisperer always seem to involve some restless spirit with “unfinished business” among the living. It’s like the Dead are finally getting around to their “to-do” lists and they need somebody like Jennifer Love Hewitt to play their personal assistant. Maybe that’s why Hewitt’s show never made it onto my “to-do” list. I prefer my ghost stories with more shrieking and wailing and less emotional closure. But I sat down on Friday to peer into the world beyond the grave, a world where the scariest thing is the dialogue. 8:00pm A blond guy—very… -
Doing the Twist with the Creators of Damages
8 Feb 2010 | 1:13 pmDamages is one of those shows that I push hard on people, because I find it so unique and challenging. And also because I am a bit of a masochist. See, Damages doesn't operate like other television shows on air right now. It prefers to dangle things in front of viewers, show them bits of the "ending" right off the bat, and generally lead them in a direction where they think they know the answer to the mystery before blowing everything up. I chatted with show creators (and brothers) Todd and Glenn Kessler about about the general sense of the FX program and Season 3. TV.com: I…

Sunday Ratings: Super Bowl, Undercover Boss Break TV Records
8 Feb 2010 | 7:28 pmThe score may have been close for most of Super Bowl XLIV, but the game’s ratings were the best thing on TV…by far. Last night’s battle between the Indianapolis Colts at the New Orleans Saints had 106.48 million Bud Light-swilling, Doritos-chomping sports fans glued to their TV sets. That number represents the largest viewing audience for any event in U.S. television history. The previous record was established by the series finale of M*A*S*H. That 1983 event totaled a whopping 105.97 viewers. Continue reading Sunday Ratings: Super Bowl, Undercover Boss Break TV Records…

My thoughts on the Super Bowl beating the laast MASH
9 Feb 2010 | 11:10 amA lot of people have asked me what I thought of Sunday’s Super Bowl eclipsing the final MASH as the most watched television show of all-time. A little like the 72 Dolphins actually. Even though I had left MASH by then (the last episode my partner and I wrote was GOODBYE RADAR for season 8) it was nice to know that I was associated with such an esteemed record. Damn! If only the WHO had guested on our final episode! If only we could have slipped in an anti-abortion ad right after the scene where the Korean woman chokes the child! If only we had done the show live! If only Peyton Manning had… -

On the food chain of entertainment it goes like this: Movies, Television, Street Performing, Radio. Movies look down at television. Television looks up at movies with awe. Wish I were there to vomit in the streets with the rest of you. Some random thoughts on the game and the telecast.I have to say I’m pleased for many reasons. Paul Reiser Step Closer To Returning To NBC
9 Feb 2010 | 4:59 amEXCLUSIVE: The last time Paul Reiser created a sitcom that was picked up by NBC, it was the major hit Mad About You and ran from 1992 all the way to 1999 on the network. So it's understandable if NBC is feeling somewhat nostalgic for Reiser's product. Now I've learned that last night the network picked up a Warner Bros pilot that was written by and stars Paul Reiser who also will executive produce. There's no official announcement about this yet. But the deal for this single-camera filmed series is said to be "big". -

Desperate for John
29 Jan 2010 | 1:43 pmThe internet is buzzing with the news that John Barrowman will be guest starring on Desperate Housewives as a "villain". The rumor has been going around for months now but was finally confirmed by the Daily Mail and shortly thereafter by Barrowman's web team. Filming is scheduled for March and April in the US. The episodes (they did say plural!) will air in the spring for US audiences and some time around May or June for UK audiences. John will no doubt have just as much fun filming as we all will watching him. Now readers, I wonder, how do you picture his character on that show? What do you… -

Just over two hours ago, BBC One transmitted the final moments of David Tennant's run as the Tenth Doctor in the two-part "Doctor Who" special finale, "The End of Time".The finale saw the return of several of the Tenth Doctor's friends and foes, and -- since we can always link things back 'round to Torchwood SOMEHOW -- it's no surprise that Captain Jack made an appearance!(We posted back in April that John Barrowman had been spotted in costume as the Captain around the… -

Beautiful Rumors
29 Nov 2009 | 3:04 pmAccording to numerous fan postings around the internet, John Barrowman has said that Torchwood series four is on the way with a full 13 episode season! The actor, who plays Captain Jack, insisted it'll be bigger and better than ever. The good news came out this weekend at Collectormania and was reiterated by Kai Owen's official web group shortly thereafter. Other speculations say that production is slated to begin some time in January. The BBC has not made any official statements on the matter at this time, but in the past they've been the last ones to share the good (or bad) news anyway. -

9 Feb 2010 | 8:01 amKelly Cutrone doesn't have the same knack for the grating catchphrase as Rachel Zoe. No "I die" or "shut it down" or "that is ba-na-nas," repeated ad infinitum. The closest that Cutrone has gotten to a trademark line is the tough-as-nails title of her new book, "If You Have to Cry, Go Outside" -- which, frankly, is pretty good advice that I wish my mother had passed on to me before I entered the work world and blubbered like a ninny. It's a book title befitting a reality TV diva. But Cutrone is not necessarily a nasty piece of work: she is… -
'Damages': Sins of the father
9 Feb 2010 | 7:36 am“Damages” executive producer Todd Kessler has said that “family” is one of the big themes for this season of the FX show. So far, we’ve seen glimpses of the theme with the Tobin mystery, Patty’s divorce and Tom’s discovery that he has led his immediate and extended family right into Louis Tobin’s Ponzi scheme. This week’s episode, though, really drove the “family” theme home. Tom loves the chase After discovering that Tobin’s mistress, Danielle, may be on the run and leaving the country, Tom spent most of the episode trying to track her down. Meanwhile, his wife… -
'House M.D.': Cuddy's long day's journey into night
9 Feb 2010 | 7:17 amOne of my favorite episodes in this season of "House M.D." was "Wilson," which gave us a glimpse into what the show would be like if our favorite mild-mannered oncologist was the titular character. Monday night's episode, "5 to 9," was similar, offering a walk through a day in the life of Dr. Lisa Cuddy. Additionally, it showcased Lisa Edelstein's acting chops and her connection with her character. I'm thrilled that they gave this talented actress something to do other than sigh over House's antics or roll her eyes at his blatant sexual… -
'The Bachelor': Hometown visits and an early exit
9 Feb 2010 | 6:45 amWell, folks, it wouldn't be "The Bachelor: On The Wings of Love" if there weren't some last-minute rose-ceremony drama. Before we get to this week's tearful goodbye, let's discuss my favorite "Bachelor" tradition: the family visits!Gia is the first bachelorette to show Jake her hometown: good old New York, New York. She decides to take Jake on a boat ride around Manhattan, where she shows off her modeling skills. She's really got some crazy tricks up her sleeve: When he asks her to give him a "sexy" look, she just strips down to her… -
'Lost': Terry O'Quinn chats about Locke versus Smocke
9 Feb 2010 | 6:00 amConfession: We have been fascinated with John Locke since he smiled at Kate with that orange in his mouth. Something about the bald-headed guy struck us as simultaneously warm and menacing.Over the years, we've spoken to the "Lost" producers and the Emmy-winning Terry O'Quinn several times about the journey of John Locke, who until last week's premiere had maintained a bad-ass good-guy status on the island. Now, we know that Locke ain't Locke. Our Locke is dead and the Locke imposter running things is still smokey cool, but who is he and what does he want? Do we…

Episode 6021 (2/8/2010)
9 Feb 2010 | 5:32 amEPISODE NUMBER: 6021 (February 8, 2010) GUESTS: Jonathan Safran Foer SEGMENTS: The WØRD: Faux ‘N’ Tell VIDEOS: Monday, February 8, 2010 There were two things I was really disappointed about in the Super Bowl this year. The first is that there weren’t any seriously memorable ads. And secondly, all of the commercials were on Hulu before the game even started. What’s the fun in that?! The enjoyment of the Superbowl ads is that they are one of the rare communal experiences we as a society have any more. That being said, I actually enjoyed the game for once, and… -
Stephen Colbert on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’
9 Feb 2010 | 4:38 amThanks for Katt for getting us these vids first thing in the morning! I’ve seen interviews of Stephen by many different people, and each time is a different experience. It almost seemed like Jimmy Fallon was using the Chris Farley Show method of interviewing. I won’t spoil it for you, but the end of Part II is the part that everyone will be talking about this morning. Jimmy still has a way to go with interviewing, but as far as physical comedy, he’s definitely got it. Enjoy! The format of this aggregate news report is Copyright © 2010 No Fact Zone. Fantasy Colbert League: February 8-February 11
8 Feb 2010 | 10:00 amAnother week begins, and we have another stellar guest line-up. My personal preference this week is Claire Danes, who I think is just a brilliant actress, but as always, I am excited for every show. I wonder what Stephen will feed his Grammy this week? Monday, February 8: Jonathan Safran Foer Jonathan Safran Foer is the author of the recently released book, Eating Animals, which is a book about the author’s exploration of eating choices upon learning that he was going to be a father. Klassic Kolbert: Olympic Fever
7 Feb 2010 | 6:40 pmI’m ridiculously excited that the Olympics are almost upon us, as I’m sure many of you are, too. Speedskating (of course), snowboarding, slalom, figure skating, you name it. I may have to dig out the old VCR (yeah yeah yeah, no TiVo) so I can skip all the sentimental back-story hype, though. In anticipation of all the fun headed our way, let’s look back at Stephen’s coverage of previous Olympic festivities. Let the silliness begin! A LOST Spin-off We’d Like to See!
9 Feb 2010 | 11:23 amWith pilot season kicking into high gear perfectly coinciding with LOST coming to an end, one of the biggest mysteries surrounding the show, well, aside from the whole deal with the island and all, involves the question as to what’s next for the ridiculously talented ABC ensemble. After-all, just because Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly >pre-emptively put the kibosh on the obvious JACK AND KATE PLUS EIGHT spin-off that fans (okay, we) were so desperately clamouring for, doesn’t mean there’s still hope for the rest of the cast. Their Reward
6 Jan 2010 | 1:45 pmDoctor Who: The End of Time Part Two Of course there were things I didn't like. For starters, the explanation we're given for how/why the Doctor "destroyed" the Time Lords and Daleks doesn't align quite right with the cryptic hints we've gotten all along. The extent to which being in the final day of a time-locked Time War means death isn't satisfactorily explored, but apparently that's the situation. The suggestions that Gallifrey "burned" at the Doctor's hands are now rather questionable, not to mention his numerous claims that he wishes he… -
Whoops Apocalypse
5 Jan 2010 | 5:39 pmReading (okay, watching) Russell T Davies' Doctor Who The key to understanding Russell T Davies’ vision of Doctor Who can be found as early as eight minutes into the show's triumphant 2005 return. And it’s not the skittish beats of Murray Gold’s UK garage pastiche, or the rapid-edit Rose and Mickey montage, both of which would turn out to be something of a Trojan horse designed to help deliver this sci-fi curiosity to the Hollyoaks generation. It’s not even the appearance of the new, version 9.0 Doctor, now looking more like a car clamper than an Edwardian adventurer. No, the… -
Le Seigneur Perdu De Temps
2 Jan 2010 | 8:58 amDoctor Who: The End Of Time Part 2 'This was the day the Time Lords returned'...er, well, not really. They sort of just nipped in, said hello, threatened everyone, and nipped back out again. Timothy Dalton was telling fibs. Actually, it's yet another example, and very typical indeed, of RTD allowing a chunk of his Who mythology to spring conveniently back into life only for it, 45 minutes later, to be popped back into place again with nothing terribly earth shattering having happened to the series structure. However, this time he isn't allowed to have it all his own way. Moffat is waiting in… -
Return of the Fan***king
1 Jan 2010 | 7:54 pmDoctor Who: The End of Time Part 2 Well that was a blessed relief. I'd heard some pretty wild rumours during the build-up to this episode. Bernard Cribbins is the Doctor's father (Wilfred Mott = Time Lord WTF!); Claire Bloom is the Doctor's mother; Matt Smith is going to be a rebooted 1st Doctor in a reset time-line where no one can remember anything from the past 46 years; the Master snogs the Doctor's face off to help him regenerate; and my own personal favourite, Paul McGann is seen fighting in the Time War. In a wig. Thankfully, none of this came to pass. But what remains…

6 Feb 2010 | 9:27 pmOk, obvious he grew up in the UK, and he's pretty much everywhere at this point in his career, but we still will claim him as a local to the Twin Cities area. And as someone who has been a fan since Sandman originally came out two decades (eeeek!) ago, I'm very excited to see that it is extremely likely that in 2011, we will have a Doctor Who story by Neil Gaiman. One of the most exciting things about Doctor Who at the moment isn't just that it is getting guest star actors like Timothy Dalton or Bill Nighy, but guest star writers like Richard Curtis, Simon Nye, and now Neil Gaiman. That is… -

Doctor Who Fan Music (Chameleon Circuit)
26 Jan 2010 | 3:17 pmI think one of the more amusing things about the internet era is that music like Chameleon Circuit has more of an opportunity than ever to get out into the public. In the past, at best, this would be a novelty single or something that you'd end up getting a scratchy, tenth generation tape copy of. Now, you can go right to Amazon.com and pick it up.Or you can find a video on YouTube: -
American Torchwood
19 Jan 2010 | 7:38 pmI can see how Torchwood could possibly get American treatment, especially with Julie Gardner, Russell T Davies and Jane Tranter all based in California now.And honestly, I'd so much rather have an American Torchwood than an American Doctor Who remake. Which is something that really does scare me, after all. Especially if it is one not also trying to serve the UK market, which the 1996 TV movie did.I really don't have a massive opinion about it. After all, it's a genre show on FOX -- it will get canceled after at most a dozen episodes anyways.

Latest from Fancast - Maggie Grace to Make a Cameo?
9 Feb 2010 | 7:29 amDo you have an answer to this ‘Lost‘ question: Why wasn’t Shannon on the plane? Was it plot-driven, or actor-driven? – Taffy via FacebookShannon’s absence from the season premiere was actor-driven – Maggie Grace’s busy film slate precluded her from swinging by Hawaii at the right time – though the “flash-sideways” reality would have you believe that Boone was simply unable to talk his sister-lover into bailing on her abusive Aussie beau. Latest Tidbits by Michael Emerson via Fancast
8 Feb 2010 | 11:31 pmAfter “NotLocke” (aka the Smoke Monster) orchestrated Jacob’s death, why didn’t he just turn around and kill Ben? That’s a good question and I wondered it myself. But there is a reason why he can’t do that. Does Ben suspect he has done a bad thing by killing Jacob? I really don’t think Ben indulges in regrets. We’ve seen him make huge, possibly bad choices all through his life, but he just keeps moving forward. It may not be a good trait, but it is his. We like to assign the trait of “good” to Jacob, in contrast to the apparently evil “Man in Black.” Yet Jacob, with…

Jeff Probst Wants More 'Survivor' (But Not Too Much More)
9 Feb 2010 | 12:09 pmWhen 'Survivor' host Jeff Probst renews his contract, it's usually for two years (which comes out to be four seasons of the show). But when he renewed his contract with CBS and the show last week, he only renewed it for one year (two seasons). I'm not sure if this is because he doesn't want to commit to several seasons of the show or if it's a negotiating/contract thing. Could 'Survivor' continue without Probst as host? Or is he too big a part of the show? 'Survivor: Heroes & Villains' debuts on Thursday. View Poll Filed under: Survivor, TV Squad Polls, Celebrities,… -
MTV Finally Drops 'Music Television' From Its Logo
9 Feb 2010 | 11:28 amAt one point in history, MTV was known for being on the cutting edge of young programming and was quick to pick up on change. However, the network seemed unusually reluctant to stray from its original Music Television name, despite the fact the rest of the world was well-aware that their "music" programming was virtually non-existent. This reluctance was even more weird when MTV's final bastion of music videos, 'Total Request Live,' had the afternoon spot wrenched from its weakened hands. Well, MTV has finally caught up, making a visually minor but symbolically huge change to its logo: No… -
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. on 'Faces of America' and the Beer Summit

What You Missed Last Night: Leno on That Super Bowl Ad with Dave & Oprah

I'm a Letterman guy all the way, but there's something oddly...comforting about having Jay back at 11:35. And you know what? Seeing Jay talk about how that Super Bowl ad with David Letterman and Oprah came about is almost touching. It seems like Jay was truly moved by Letterman asking him to be in the ad, even if it was mostly just to do something funny and surprising. Jay talked about it on the show last night. Update: Yup, That '24' Movie is Still a Go
9 Feb 2010 | 10:07 amI'm not talking about a TV movie a la '24: Redemption,' I'm talking about an adventure that Jack Bauer will have on the big screen. TV Guide is reporting that a screenwriter has been hired to write the '24' movie. Billy Ray, who wrote the movies 'Shattered Glass,' 'State of Play,' the remake of 'Westworld' as well as many episodes of the mid-90s sci-fi series 'Earth 2,' is going to do the screenplay for the movie. Of course, since this is a big screen movie of a small screen show, they have to do something a little "larger," so Jack won't be saving Los Angeles or New York or even Ottumwa,…

8 Feb 2010 | 1:02 pmSomewhere in the CBS press release about Undercover Boss's boffo debut ratings was the claim that this was the biggest debut for any new TV series since the Dolly show in 1987. If you're like me, you're thinking, Wow! And also: What the hell was the Dolly show? I was not watching a lot of TV [...] -
Undercover Boss Is Phony and Manipulative. But Don't Hold That Against It.
8 Feb 2010 | 12:12 pmAlong with last night's mammoth Super Bowl ratings came the news that 38.6 million people watched the debut of CBS's new reality show Undercover Boss, in which executives work incognito within their own companies. Did those people see an entertaining, emotional work that celebrated American workers? Or a manipulative, cheesy piece of big-network p.r. for [...] -
Super Bowl Beats Everything on TV, Ever
8 Feb 2010 | 11:17 amLast night's Super Bowl was the most watched program. Period. Of the night, the week, the year, the Christian era, you name it—at 106.5 million viewers, it broke the record held for 27 years by the finale of M*A*S*H. (Which means that that many people, give or take a few million bathroom breaks, watched that crappy [...]

My take on the 'Chuck' controversy as some fans of the spy guy flip out
9 Feb 2010 | 10:32 amWhy must I poke the bear? Why must I jab the angry, angry bear with a sharp, sharp stick? I don't know. Just can't resist, I guess. Some "Chuck" fans are up in arms about Monday's episode of the NBC show. And I want to share some of my thoughts, but before doing so, I want to issue a few warnings: If the comment area fills up with angry, screechy, hysterical or otherwise unpleasant comments, I'll shut them down. I have a sinus infection, I'm tired, and even on a good day, I have no time for foolishness. If you really tick me off, you could end up banned from… -
Bid on Nirvana, 'Rome,' 'Heroes,' 'Monk,' 'Medium,' 'Lost' and 'Battlestar' items to help Haiti
8 Feb 2010 | 12:30 pmI just wanted to let readers know that we've added a bunch of cool new items to the Watch Us Care eBay auction to benefit the people of Haiti. And I also wanted to let people know there's only one day left to bid on rare and/or swell memorabilia from "Battlestar Galactica," "Dollhouse," "Friday Night Lights," "Lost," "Supernatural" and "Sons of Anarchy." All the proceeds from the auction and from this direct-donation page go to the Haitian medical charity Partners in Health. Here are a few recently added auction items that you might find of interest: A Nirvana "heart-shaped box" with the… -
A new 'Lost' podcast: 'Orientation: Ryan Station'
7 Feb 2010 | 6:13 pmHey there, "Lost" fans! Sorry that I've been neglecting the ABC show lately. I kid! I know I've been writing about "Lost" a lot lately (all my pre- and post-premiere coverage is here), and I spent part of Sunday obsessing on the show as well -- with company. Welcome to a new weekly podcast: "Orientation: Ryan Station." My friend and fellow blogger Ryan McGee, who writers Zap2it.com's Guide to Lost, have teamed up to create a "Lost" podcast. The format we followed was a little bit of a tribute to "Mystery Science Theater 3000," in… -
Let's talk 'Supernatural': 'The Song Remains the Same'
5 Feb 2010 | 12:34 amBefore we get to this week's "Supernatural" review, I want to direct fans' attention to an ongoing charity auction I'm doing via eBay. One hundred percent of the proceeds benefit Partners in Health, a Haitian medical charity assisting earthquake victims. There are quite a few "Supernatural" items in the current auction offerings (which I add to every few days). And you can also give directly to Partners in Health via this page (which could get you some "Lost" swag, if you're a fan of that show; blogger JOpinionated has kicked in some other "Lost" prizes here). For more information on the… -
'Lost' and 'Supernatural': Have they become the same show?
3 Feb 2010 | 10:02 amIs it me, or has "Lost" become "Supernatural"? Or has "Supernatural" become more like "Lost" over the years? I am seeing a lot of parallels between the shows, especially after Tuesday's season premiere of the ABC drama (and before you read on, this list assumes that you have seen the "Lost" season premiere as well as the current season of the CW's "Supernatural"). Some spooky parallels (and add more in comments if you think of any): After a white flash, Sam an Dean Winchesters found they'd been mysteriously removed from a dangerous appearance by Satan. After a white flash, the "Lost"…

CNN Testing Wire Capabilities Without AP
9 Feb 2010 | 11:41 amFor this week, CNN is taking yet another step away from the Associated Press, eschewing the agency's service for a trial run using only their own wires, reports the Washington Examiner: As part of the test, the network will evaluate the need for an AP subscription, and will look to staff for feedback on how a lack of AP wires affects workflow. CNN already offers an external wire service to other news outlets. As a network spokesperson points out, "CNN has made a conscious effort in the last few years to reduce our reliance on outside wire services." CNN launched CNN Wire in 2008 in an effort… -
Obama Meets the Press, First Question to FNC's Major Garrett
9 Feb 2010 | 10:45 amPres. Obama made a rare appearance at the daily press briefing today taking questions from the assembled White House Press Corps, with the first question going to Fox News correspondent Major Garrett. The second went to ABC's Jake Tapper. The last press time Pres. Obama had a full scale news conference was in July. Just yesterday, The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz spoke with members of the press corps who were not happy with the lack of access to Obama. "It's a source of great frustration here," said CBS's Chip Reid. Developing... > 1:48pm: After the third question, Obama says he'll take two… -

Online Video is Getting Social: Vpype has Integration with Facebook
8 Feb 2010 | 12:40 pmMILPITAS, CA -- With social media usage across Facebook, Twitter, and niche social sites continuing to climb, it's inevitable that a number of start-ups will emerge to piggyback on the opportunity. One such company aiming for a role in the social video world is the startup Vpype. I visited the company's offices and sat down with both the CEO, Shoeib Yunus, and the company's chief marketing officer, Arnold Waldstein. Waldstein focused on the role Vpype expects social videos to play in the new media world. It's worth noting that mobile video sharing and social video across niche and other sites… -

I interviewed Kydd last week at the AlwaysOn OnMedia conference here in Manhattan. In a story in Monday's New York Times, David Carr says that Demand pays as little as $30 for an original video clip. While this is quite a modest sum, freelancers are paid twice-weekly and some qualify for health… -

2010 Winter Olympics: 10 athletes who already have crossover fame
9 Feb 2010 | 12:24 pmThe Winter Olympics will undoubtedly create a few new stars, just like they do every four years. Some previously unknown figure skater (we're looking at you, Rachael Flatt) or go-for-broke skier will turn in a breathtaking performance that, along with endless hours of TV coverage, will make him or her an instant household name. That's all great, and it's part of the appeal of the Olympics. But the 2010 Winter Games also feature a fair number of athletes who've already made that crossover. Following in the footsteps of Dorothy Hamill, Peggy Fleming, the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" hockey team and… -

As part of Zap2it's continuing countdown to Valentine's Day, we take a look back at each of their careers. Both actors came into acting once they were adults (or nearly so), so there's not a whole lot of old stuff that you wouldn't be aware of. We did dig up this clip of a very young Anne Hathaway in a Better Homes and Gardens commercial.Check it out: Isn't she all kinds of cute?Hathaway has come a long… -

She says they have a couple good rockers and a "great eclectic group of people." She also says one of the hardest things is the kids who have never really auditioned before. They didn't grow up in show business, so hearing criticism is a "harsh taste of reality.""You can't teach them experience. Hopefully the people we've put through learn very quickly to gain that kind of confidence that usually only comes from experience.""That's one thing I… -

Esquire: Anna Torv Is a Woman We Love
8 Feb 2010 | 3:22 pmEsquire magazine has selected Anna Torv for their upcoming "Women We Love" article - which is essentially a collection of random quotes and racy photos. The only quote even remotely Fringe related has to do with script dialogue:Sometimes there will be a line in the script and I just can't imagine saying it. I'll ask an American and they'll say, "Oh, yeah. That's how we say it." We just say things differently in Australia — like torch. I'd ask, "Can I have the torch?" Undercover Boss Strikes Ratings Gold After Super Bowl
9 Feb 2010 | 8:12 amIn January, CBS made the controversial decision to air the premiere of an unseen reality series instead of a popular show after the Super Bowl. But CBS’ Undercover Boss pulled in solid ratings for the network according to Nielsen overnight ratings. In the early preliminary market numbers Undercover Boss had a 20.3/33 (household rating/share) between 10:15pm-11:15pm. These are the best numbers since Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 and trumped NBC’s The Office, which scored a 14.4/24 after the Super Bowl. “The journey of watching a chief executive walk a mile in their… -
Brian Williams’ Nightly News One of Few Gems at NBC
9 Feb 2010 | 8:11 amLate last month Brian Williams’ Nightly News was viewed by an average of 10.1 million viewers each evening, beating not only Leno’s numbers, but that of every other NBC show in prime time all week. Reality series The Biggest Loser was closest at 9.7 million according to Nielsen data. Williams also had the lead in the 25-to-54 age group, which is most important to news advertisers. Both NBC’s Today show and Nightly News have increased leads in the ratings over second-place broadcasts on ABC News since each of those networks switched anchors in December. “Having turned… -
How A Buffalo Woman Cut Her TV Bill
9 Feb 2010 | 7:00 amIn a few of my past blogs, I’ve harped on the fact that more and more people will switch from cable/satellite to an internet stream to get their entertainment. But there hasn’t been any concrete figures or instructions on how to do so or how much one might save. Enter Eleanor Cook, a Buffalo native who recently moved out of her parent’s house, ending her “free cable subscription”. She describes herself as “extremely cheap” and who can blame her in these times. If I had a choice between television and internet, I’d say bye-bye to TV in a heartbeat. So here’s how she… -
Super Bowl Most Watched Show Ever
9 Feb 2010 | 7:00 amUnless you were living under a rock or were lost at sea, you were either aware of or watching the Super Bowl yesterday. The Saints beat the Colts (don’t even get me started on that one), but more press-worthy is the fact that it was the most watched program in US television history. For those old enough to remember, it overtook the 27-year old record held by the final episode of MASH, the old military comedy. The game had a whopping 106.5 million viewers according to the early Nielsen estimates. MASH’s previous number was 105.97. Both, incidentally, were on CBS, who I’m sure is…

"Avatar:" Simple Entertainment or Destructive Stereotypes?

Or backward, depending on what the island is doing.I spent the last few weeks watching the show from the beginning to pick out my 25 best moments of "Lost." Here they are: 1. Walt Is Taken from The Raft By The Others - "Exodus" Part 2 (S1)There's a scene…

Caprica: Rebirth
7 Feb 2010 | 7:30 pmThe fascinating thing about a prequel is that it can answer so many questions. In the case of Caprica, there were many questions never answered by Battlestar Galactica, and it appears we are getting those explanations. Starting to, at least. For one, why did the Cylons believe in one god rather than many? Well, Zoe Graystone, who is both Adam and Eve for the Cylons, was a member of the Soldiers of the One, a monotheistic group who believed terror was the means to an end. And she was more than just an enthusiastic foot soldier, I believe. The attachment her teacher had to her was extreme. And… -
Lost: LA X
4 Feb 2010 | 7:04 amFirst, let me just say this about Lost’s return to the airwaves for its final season: Wow. Forgetting for a moment all the questions it answered and new ones it raised, I find myself continually amazed at the skill of the writers, actors, directors – hell, even the Best Boy deserves an Emmy so far as I’m concerned. This two-parter was gorgeously filmed. Impeccably acted. Fantastically – and minimally – written. Surprises were truly surprises. Neither acting nor writing telegraphed what was going to come next. And hear this, Emmy voters: If you do NOT give… -
Supernatural: Sam, Interrupted
31 Jan 2010 | 6:58 pmThe first episode back after the winter break gave us a very different view of the brothers than we’re used to. Each had to come to grips with the demons (pardon the pun) they face, in his own way. I think what I liked best about this episode was that just when we thought we knew what it was about, we were wrong. More than once. Sure, in the end, the identity of the wraith was obvious, but what’s that they say about hindsight being 20/20? I’m consistently impressed by how original the show manages to be. First, I want to say this about the episode’s final scene: I… -
24: Wow, Annie Wersching can ACT
30 Jan 2010 | 6:55 pmIt’s funny how one scene can really turn an episode on its ear and turn it from meh to must-watch. It’s a shame I had to wait through the entire episode to get there with this week’s 24, but the mano-a-mano between Renee and Vlad, as she’s on her knees next to the river and Vlad has a gun pointed at her face, demanding the truth was riveting. My TV signal on Monday kept cutting out, so I only caught little snatches of the episode, mostly involving the crappiest sideplot since what may or may not have happened in Denver in Season 6. I finally got to catch up on Hulu… -

24 Film Is In Its Initial Phases Of Moving Forward
9 Feb 2010 | 4:51 amVariety reports that 20th Century Fox has hired screenwriter Billy Ray (no Cyrus, sorry), author of "Shattered Glass," "Flightplan." and "State of Play" to take a crack on an idea he pitched to the studio for a Jack Bauer film. The concept involves Jack fighting bad guys in Europe (an idea I conspicuously offered somewhere on the internet a week ago, but no worries, Billy, my idea involved gypsies and an elephant named "Oswald"). Let's be clear- a lot of fan sites (and some industry news sites) will throw out the headline "24 Movie Starts Production!"- well, that's not accurate. Studios pay… -
24 Season 8: 10PM-11PM Quick Review
8 Feb 2010 | 7:05 pmThe Ruskie Corleone Family dominated the start of tonight's episode and it made for some fun spy movie shenanigans. There was talk of angels, honor, blood, battlefields, nukes and sliced bread. The only thing missing was a scene where they sit in a sauna and run into an ice-frozen lake, drinking "wodka" and riding polar bears. Okay, maybe that wouldn't have fit, but you would be talking about it to your friends tomorrow! Meanwhile, Dana Walsh and her Dumb and Dumber crew get into some silly trouble, pulling jokes on each other and on a poor cop who happens upon this criminally genius… -
24 Season 8: Hitler Does Not Like This Season So Far...
2 Feb 2010 | 9:01 pmFor anyone unfamiliar with this internet fad, for a couple of years people have been taking a scene from the movie "Downfall" (in which Hitler berates his subordinates) and put in their own subtitles on any number of subjects ranging from sports, politics and entertainment. It's meant as satire, and not to make light of Nazi Germany or the Holocaust. Now that we have that out of the way, here's my playful take on Season 8's problems thus far: -
24 Season 8 Spoilers
2 Feb 2010 | 12:17 pmI usually don't get involved in the spoilers business because I like for folks to see the show on its own. But two images I came across show something I think will interest those of us who feel the Dana Walsh/Jenny story is not working. Click here to read the spoilers Is Jenny running from Jack? Looks like it. And it looks like this takes place several hours from where we are currently in the season. These photos were taken from a location shoot in downtown L.A. (which begs another question: does Jack go back to L.A. this season or are they using the location to stand-in for NYC?) -
24 Season 8: 9PM-10PM Quick Review
1 Feb 2010 | 7:03 pmThis week we get to further explore the unstable, undercover and unstoppable Renee Walker. It's becoming routine that Jack tells CTU Director Hastings that Renee is crazy. And Hastings ignores Jack's warnings (again). Arlo Glass is still sexually harassing Dana Walsh/Jenny, this time offering her to cry on any body part she so desires. TO THE WRITERS OF "24"- congratulations on the worst dialogue in the history of television. Okay, moving on... No, actually we can't move on because we got a first on "24"- a Chloe ass shot, served up to viewers following her telling off Arlo for being a…

‘Time Stands Still,’ a Play for All Journalists
31 Jan 2010 | 5:40 pmAs if the reality of media layoffs and non-existant newspaper readerships wasn’t enough of a reason for journalists to take up drinking, along comes Broadway’s ‘Time Stands Still,’ a play focusing on the emotional breakdown of a war correspondent. Photo by Joan Marcus Written by Donald Margulies and directed by Daniel Sullivan, ‘Time Stands Still’ touches on the always relevant, yet often sidelined, subject of journalism. This at a time when the profession is battling e-readers and blogs — formats that erase the desire for hard copy newspapers and… -
Fond Look Back at Pasadena Playhouse
30 Jan 2010 | 10:42 amWhile many New Yorkers stick their noses up at the thought of a “theatre scene” in Los Angeles, there is plenty of live theatre going on in the spread-out city. Some of it is actually worth watching. Having covered the Los Angeles theatre beat for a long while, it was always my hope to highlight the best of what the town had to offer, and during my time with BroadwayWorld.com, I often had great success in doing so. Video I produced of 'Mask' Video I produced of 'Of Mice and Men' One venerable theatre that lent itself to my cause was the Pasadena Playhouse, a… -
Triumph the Insult Comic Dog to Co-Host Tonight Show?
22 Jan 2010 | 7:04 amAfter seemingly endless public fighting and controversy, Conan O’Brien is ready to depart NBC’s ‘The Tonight Show‘ with Friday night’s broadcast marking his final time hosting the legendary late-night program. First hosted by comedian Steve Allen in 1954, ‘The Tonight Show’ has seen many lead the talk show. From Allen and Jack Paar to the venerable Johnny Carson and now O’Brien, the program is full of comic history. Jay Leno reigned as king of ‘The Tonight Show’ from 1992-2009 after nabbing, some would argue “stealing,”… -
Opera Plays the Hayden Planetarium
19 Jan 2010 | 8:34 amIt’s not often that my work as an entertainment and Broadway reporter crosses paths with my day job as the New Media Specialist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, so when I heard that an opera was going to be staged in the Museum’s Hayden Planetarium, I was excited to check it out. Turns out the director of Broadway’s recent Hair revival, Diane Paulus, decided to direct a production of Il mondo della luna (The World on the Moon) by Joseph Haydn in the Planetarium — a perfect setting for a show about a nobleman who is fooled, by a fake… -
Broadway’s Ragtime Closes Proudly
29 Dec 2009 | 8:46 amLooking at the current Broadway season, both at shows that have already closed and upcoming productions, the most prevalent trend is star power. And by star, I don’t mean theatrical heavyweights like Ethel Merman, George M. Cohan or Bert Lahr — these names certainly mean little to nothing when it comes to the current theatregoing masses. Stars on Broadway this season mean Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Scarlett Johansson. All of these actors have names that transcend the stage — something producers surely hope will fill seats as tourists roll into town. While some of…

Tamra Barney Already Has A New Man
8 Feb 2010 | 9:50 amWe all knew this was going to get ugly, right? Someone on the Real Housewives of Orange County cast must have a direct line to an editor at Radar Online, because they were the first ones to report that newly single Tamra Barney (remember her husband Simon filed for a divorce last month) hooked up with one of Simon’s friends over the weekend in Las Vegas. OUCH! The story is Simon was in Vegas last weekend, hanging out at the Hard Rock Hotel, and he just so conveniently happened to walk into the same club Tamra and Simon’s boy, “Eddie Judge” were canoodling. Simon says… -
Vicki and Simon Compete For The Title Of Worst Person Ever
5 Feb 2010 | 6:55 pmHappy Friday! How did you all feel about last night’s episode of Real Housewives of Orange County?I haven’t seen the full episode yet because I’ve been moving to a different state (excuses, I know) so I don’t have the full magnitude of last night’s shitshow, but I did catch this clip of Vicki and Simon fighting over who has messed up Simon’s marriage more. Vicki says that a few months ago, Tamra confided some marital problems to her, and now Simon thinks Vicki knows too much. Tamra just wants everyone to get along, but both Simon and Vicki refuse. I think… -
Are Alex McCord and Simon VanKempen Off Of “Real Housewives Of New York City”?
4 Feb 2010 | 11:07 pmGatecrasher reported yesterday that Alex McCord and Simon Van Kempen, the social climbing couple of Real Housewives of New York City may not be returning for the fourth season of that show. Keep in mind, season three hasn’t even aired yet! The source says that Alex is on the chopping block because “viewers don’t have a positive reaction to them, so they’re easily replaceable at this point.” Ouch. Another rumor is that Simon threw a “hissy fit” because he wasn’t getting paid as much as the housewives. To which I ask: Simon’s getting paid? -
Bravo Teams Up With Foursquare
4 Feb 2010 | 7:30 amProving they’re savvier than most, Bravo announced a partnership with location-based software Foursquare on Monday. If you don’t know Foursquare, you probably don’t live in San Francisco or New York City and your friends aren’t huge social media addicts. Essentially, it’s a way to “check in” to places you go either by text or by iPhone or Blackberry application. The point is people you know will see you there and maybe come join you. In practice, it can turn into an e-stalking fest or you just end up checking in at the same place as all of your… -
Shauna Freaks Out On “Millionaire Matchmaker”
3 Feb 2010 | 2:09 pmOn last night’s Millionaire Matchmaker, Shauna, a millionaress actually turned around and ran away from her dashing date, Mark. Whether or not the show is scripted is anyone’s guess, but her irrational screaming while running through the hotel about how she stayed there all the time and was throwing away a Louis Vuitton (she left her shoe while running away) seemed pretty real to me. Shauna didn’t like Mark because he was too old for her. She goes back to Patti for one more try, but balks when Patti suggests going out with someone without seeing a photo first. Patti kicks…

In Defense Of Watching Stupid People On Television
8 Feb 2010 | 2:06 pmIt seems the gloves have come off recently, and everybody and their brother is climbing on their high horse about the level of stupidity on television. I’m not sure why there seems to be this sudden upsurge of feeling superior to those who tune in to such things as Jersey Shore, which seems to be a major culprit in the upturn, but it’s gotten to the point that it bears examination. As though tuning in for the State of the Union somehow makes one less stupid than spinning the dial (play along, I’m old) in any other direction, or, in point of fact, is anything less of a… -
Lisa Edelstein Interview – House’s Cuddy Gets Focus Episode
8 Feb 2010 | 11:41 amNot that long ago, Wilson got his own feature episode on House, and now it’s Cuddy’s turn. Lisa Edelstein held a Q&A to talk about her character generally, and the episode “5 to 9,” which airs tonight. The show is certainly mixing things up, and I for one am glad. These two character specific (sort of) episodes, along with the jumps and twists that have gone on this season are keeping things fresh, and the show needs it. During a day in the life of Princeton Plainsboro’s Dean of Medicine, Dr. Lisa Cuddy, the inner workings of the hospital are seen through her… -
Gary Unmarried The Complete First Season DVD Review – Win Yours Here
8 Feb 2010 | 8:35 amIt’s getting to the point where it becomes difficult for television critics to partake of one of their favorite endeavors – championing the lesser-knowns. Unless it’s on cable, if you don’t already know about it, it’s probably gone anyway. About the closest we get these days comes by way of cases like Gary Unmarried. Already in its second season, the show is doing pretty well, but it hasn’t quite got everyone talking. That’s about as good as it gets for a critics longing to share the undiscovered. The first season DVD hits tomorrow, Feb. 9, and I… -
You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown DVD – Win Yours Here
7 Feb 2010 | 11:30 amOf all the Peanuts DVD releases, few are quite as interesting as You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown. While other releases include some of the rarer specials, adding value to bringing home the classics, this one is not only rarely seen, but is such a unique creature in its own right that it’s a must own for anyone calling themselves a fan. Working the Peanuts characters into a Tony Award-winning stage phenomenon, and subsequently working that effort back into an animated special is the kind of cultural icon exploration you just aren’t going to run into often. In You’re a… -
From Paris With Love Movie Review
7 Feb 2010 | 9:45 amSometimes you find yourself just asking, “Why?” A good percentage of the time the answer turns out to be that a goodly portion of those people who actually buy tickets are going to go see something. It’s Friday night. You don’t want to go see the love story, but you’re not particularly in the mood for comedy, and whatever actiony thing is at the theater is what you’re going to pick. Some movies get made just to be that option. From Paris with Love is such a film. However, it does have a few things going for it that at least distinguish it from much of the…

'Valentine's Day' Actress Jessica Biel

If you don't know who Jessica is by now you must be living under a rock that doesn't get internet access because even being barricaded in your parent's basement wouldn't be an excuse.A word from Jessica: "It’s nice to have a little meat on you, and I hope I inspire women to appreciate their muscular calves."I don't know if women appreciate them, but men certainly do. Namely YOUR muscular calves, which can look gross on many less attractive, fatter females. -

9 Feb 2010 | 10:42 amSuperman rescues Mini Nolan. It doesn't matter why. Warner Bros. must be supplying Christopher Nolan with an endless supply of whores, drugs, or fish and chips. The director of The Dark Knight and the upcoming WB film Inception has decided to nurture the new Superman movie that's in development and let it suck from the voluptuous teet of his creativity. Nolan is not writing or directing the film, but instead has taken on the role of "godfather," a title I hope appears in the credits. Developing Superman Returns was such a quagmire for WB it's no wonder they're turning to their… -

3-D 'Jaws' Remake May Be in the Works at Universal
9 Feb 2010 | 5:41 amHas our insatiable appetite for stereoscopic film imagery driven us past the point of no return? Would Hollywood be brazen enough to dig up the corpse of a classic in order to drop a 3-D deuce in its mouth? I'd like to think there's a certain line that does not get crossed but this item has me worried.A source at Universal has told Cinema Blend that a 3-D remake of Jaws may be in the works. From Cinema Blend:Their claim is that people now expect more, visually, from their movie going experience. So, Hollywood studios are inclined to take some of their tried and true franchise names like Jaws…
