    30 Jul 2014 | 7:58 pm
Syfy’s Sharknado 2 never aspired to be high art, but its titular plot device — massive tornadoes that cause sharks to rain down from the sky, which made last year’s original a viral hit — did all it could to get people tuning in and talking with one campy, ridiculous OMG! moment after another. Below, reactions from TIME’s television critic James Poniewozik and reporter Nolan Feeney. JAMES PONIEWOZIK Best Death (human): I’ve got to call an upset here and give this to a *non-shark* killing: the head of the Statue of Liberty flies across New York Harbor and takes out…

  • Thursday Review: SundanceTV's The Honorable Woman and Rectify

    Matt Roush
    31 Jul 2014 | 6:31 am
If SundanceTV's The Honorable Woman were any timelier in its geopolitical drama, most specifically of the Israeli-Palestinian variety, it would bleed newsprint. But it's the emotional intricacies of this rewardingly complex and brilliantly acted eight-part miniseries (Thursdays, 10/9c) that resonate timelessly, grounded by Maggie Gyllenhaal's impassioned, extraordinary performance as the title character, idealistic Anglo-Israeli philanthropist and newly appointed Baroness Nessa Stein. Gyllenhaal brings layers upon layers of crisp elegance, prideful steel, profound sorrow and ultimately an…

    31 Jul 2014 | 4:00 am
Hybrid reality TV shows that combine unscripted interaction and fair competition inside a fictional context have significant hurdles to overcome. From Murder in Small Town X to Pirate Master to Whodunnit, many shows have tried. At long last, a show has succeeded in finding […]

My delay in writing this came first from a hectic flight back into the country on the night the show aired and with me struggling to find a way to write a review now that I missed the instant "quick review" format that I've been utilizing all season. Having some time to reflect on the episode, here's my less traditional take on yet another finale of 24: Watching the end to Season 9 of 24, called "Live Another Day," I found myself spacing out right after Audrey Raines bit the bullet thanks to Chinese mercenaries. My mind drifted to a scene far removed from what I was looking at on screen- I…

That’s not quite as bad as it sounds, because the alienation only comes by way of a potential nepotism backlash, and the public is somewhat immune to paying attention to such things, unless someone stirs them up about it. Welcome to Sweden is a sit-com that is ostensibly based on Greg Poehler’s real experience as a New Yorker who moves to Sweden to live with his girlfriend. Because his sister, Amy, makes several cameo…
  • Spent: Looking For Change Movie Review – Tackling The Breakdown In Banking

    Marc Eastman
    9 Jul 2014 | 7:54 am
Spent: Looking for Change Movie Review The cold truth is that far too often problems simply don’t seem to exist until we find a way to put a face on them, unless they touch us directly. Spent: Looking for Change is a documentary short that hopes to put that face on the death spiral that is the general banking and finance system in America. Everyone has a general idea of the difficulties people face when it comes to credit scores, and the problems that might be faced by those who, because of hard times, find themselves forced out of the normal banking system, but these things are easy to put…
  • The Bridge Review Season 2 – FX Drama Switches Gears

    Marc Eastman
    8 Jul 2014 | 2:38 pm
The Bridge Review – Season 2 Taking a show that seemingly ends, more or less, into a season two pick-up is tricky ground under the best scenarios, but FX‘s The Bridge was the story of the hunt for a serial killer, and now we have to find something else to do with ourselves. The gimmick, apart from the serial killer investigation, was obviously trying to coordinate U.S. and Mexican law enforcement, while weaving through the corruption inherent in the world surrounding the border. This led to some great twists and turns, especially when it came to certain aspects of trying to exist…
  • Foxcatcher Teaser Trailer – Channing Tatum Incites Curious Oscar Buzz

    Marc Eastman
    8 Jul 2014 | 6:36 am
Foxcatcher has been managing a lot of hype since at least last November, and the release of the teaser trailer has caused quite a stir. The internet is throwing the name around, as well as both Channing Tatum‘s and Steve Carell‘s, connected with ideas like “Oscar contender,” and “Award worthy,” and while the trailer gives hope for a solid film, I have to wonder exactly where all the love is coming from. To be fair, a lot of the discussion is obviously coming from people who have seen the film (it was at Cannes), but a lot of it is also coming from people…

  • ‘Night At The Museum 3′ Trailer May Suggest Ben Stiller Should Just Stay Away From Museums Altogether

    Penn Collins
    30 Jul 2014 | 11:44 am
Ben Stiller’s character has had some crazy nights in museums over the past decade, but that doesn’t mean he’s learned his lesson. At least in A Night at the Museum 3, it seems that being trapped in museums is at least now a conscientious decision, and not just some zany set of circumstances. That’s the good news. The bad news is that doesn’t deter Robin Williams from appearing in this film. Depending on how you view these things, his presence might be cancelled out by Ben Kingsley‘s. If you hate Robin Williams AND Ben Kingsley, then I’m sorry to say…

    30 Jul 2014 | 11:16 am
Don’t you hate how there aren’t any good comedies set in the colonial period? Yeah, you do. Even if you didn’t even know you did. AMC sure does, and that’s (presumably) why they’re stepping out with We Hate Paul Revere, one such comedy that follows two guys who sure do hate Paul Revere. Of course, it would have been fairly predictable for AMC to cast some d-bag in the role of Paul Revere, like one of the Workaholics, or maybe Ed Helms. Nope. They got one of the more likable people in the world, Ron Livingston, to play Paul Revere. Why do those two guys hate Paul…

    Lindsay Cronin
    30 Jul 2014 | 1:00 pm
Jaime Primak Sullivan will make her reality television debut in “Jersey Belle” next week, a series which chronicles her “attempts to fit into a world not used to an unapologetic and outspoken woman,” following her 2006 marriage to Mountain Brook’s Michael Sullivan. As the founder and president of Bridge and Tunnel Entertainment, a PR and strategic marketing agency, which has worked on several major events, including P. During the Television Critics Association Press Tour, show runner Noah Hawley talked about the future of “Fargo” and how it will be taking place in the past. Based on what he said, I’m hopeful season two will answer a few burning questions. 1. What happened at Sioux Falls? Something sinister happened at Sioux Falls in 1979, and it shook diner owner Lou Solverson so much that he still can’t stop talking about it 27 years later. The gruff and grizzled former cop mentioned Sioux Falls multiple times during season one, and it looks like fans are finally going to find out…

One of the biggest surprises at this past weekend’s San Diego Comic Con was the appearance of revered filmmaker Christopher Nolan and newly-crowned Best Actor Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey, who were on hand to present a dialogue about their upcoming film, Interstellar.  It was the first time either of them had attended the convention, which is surprising especially given Nolan’s contributions to the world of comic book movies with his Batman trilogy.  They spoke about the challenges of making a sci-fi film of this magnitude, and how the scope of the film is massive.

From Lightly Buzzed Greetings from Germany! I have been off the radar for a bit while I consume chocolate and sausage (wink wink). My significant other downloaded some episodes of The Strain, a show I was interested in because of the horror and gore after they subjected the world to the eye-worm advertisement. People freaked out, so I was instantly interested.  I had no knowledge of the show other than the freakish gore part, hoping it might be a more sci-fi style American Horror Story with even creepier body horror.  All this is a big “yay” for me. Borrowed from http://thewertzone.blogspot.com/ I’m not particularly a contrarian by trade, and one could probably categorize me in the hipster file if they were so inclined, but I’m about to lay some hate on an institution that I think deserves it. I think New York Comic Con is a buzzkill. I think it does a disservice to fans and fandoms and it’s time I put it on blast. Here’s the reason for my resentment: the treatment of Terry Pratchett. At New York Comicon the year I went, he was giving a panel where he was reading from his latest book. The crowd seated about fifty…

From GoodMenProject Wilfred is coming back for a final season, and I can’t wait. Wilfred is another one of those shows with that unique tonal flavor; dark, but with a half-twist of a smile, straddling clever writing and jokes about humping. I have no idea what to officially expect, mainly because I don’t watch trailers and commercials, and I don’t follow spoiler articles about guest stars and such. But I do know what I hope to see.  Let’s refresh. The final episode of the last season ended explosively, with the death of Ryan’s father and the revelation that…

The cavalcade of mixed reactions to the conclusion of the “Pamela” three-parter is indicative of something positive about a show; that it is so highly affective that individual people will have remarkably different reactions. My experience live-tweeting it was met with a great deal of support and a little bit of ire. It isn’t wrong for people to question my feminism after my ultimately positive response. One of the advantages of feminism(s) is that the reactions and beliefs are varied, and in this specific instance, I will be departing from the mainstream of feminism by…

  • Review: In The Flesh Season 2, Episode 3

    Kirsty Everiss
    6 Jul 2014 | 7:52 am
The third episode of this series sees the storyline go down a dark path. The enemy of the piece, the new councillor, may have secrets to hide. At the end of episode 2 Jem, Kieren’s sister, was patrolling the woods for any rabid PDS sufferers. A party was going on near the woods and Henry, a PDS sufferer and class mate of Jem’s, was walking through the woods. Jem, thinking she needs to prove herself, shoots Henry dead after thinking he is a rabid. Gary, Jem’s fellow patroller, attempts to cover up the incident. Jem feels guilt ridden that Henry is really dead this time and not coming…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 10 – The Children

    Harriet Matthews
    16 Jun 2014 | 11:52 pm
The title of season four’s final episode refers, in the main, to two things; the mysterious Children of the Forest, who are supposedly gone from the world, and the children of Tywin Lannister. The Children of the Forest, along with the mysterious ‘three eyed raven’, are what Bran and company are hunting for north of the Wall. And, this week, they finally find them, in a spectacular display of old world magic. The coveted raven turns out to be an elderly man living underneath a giant (and beautiful) Weirwood tree dispensing mystical advice, which is presumably going to take Bran’s…

  • Review: In the Flesh Season 2, Episode 2

    Kirsty Everiss
    11 Jun 2014 | 3:17 am
The end of the second series opener was leading us down a dark path. As the second episodes starts we can tell that village relations are going to be fraught. This episode focuses mostly on Jem, the sister of main character, Kieren. Jem is back at school after the events of the Rising in Roarton. She is having nightmares about her experiences of killing Rotters (the dead beings that had risen). Kieren is planning to leave for France, but is stopping due to a new initiative set up in the village by the new MP. However, there are dark forces that are trying to expose the new government…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 9 – The Watchers on the Wall

    Harriet Matthews
    10 Jun 2014 | 12:08 am
Well, we’d be lying if we said this was the direction we thought the showrunners would take for episode nine, the event episode of the fourth season. We certainly weren’t expecting an entire episode completely dedicated to the men of the Night’s Watch. Fervently hoping for one, certainly, but expecting one? We never thought they’d have the cojones. Considering the amount of other interesting stuff going on in Westeros at the moment, the decision was risky, but it’s paid off (big time). Going by sheer spectacle, The Watchers on the Wall is the best episode of Game of Thrones yet. The…

Contains some spoilers for the book: The Silent Stars Go By Dan Abnett Rory, Amy, and the Doctor find themselves on an earth-like planet. Of course the Doctor had originally promised to take Amy and Rory back to Leadworth for Christmas, but as we all know, the TARDIS rarely takes the Doctor and his companions where they want to go, but instead takes them where they are needed. And the inhabitants of this planet, known as the Morphans, desperately need the Doctor. The Morphans have spent generation after generation trying to make the planet hospitable for human life by trying to trying to turn…
  • Short Film Review: Doctor Who: Celebrating 50 Years of Fandom

    whoviantheology
    8 Jul 2014 | 7:21 am
The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who was a celebratory event-fans throughout the world eagerly waited in anticipation for the 50th anniversary special, a slew of books, posters, and various other merchandise flooded the fanbase, and conventions throughout the world-both official and “unofficial” provided an avenue for fans to show their love for their favorite time lord. In all of the major celebrations and the deluge of official merchandise, it was easy to overlook some of the smaller yet still noteworthy celebrations of the show. One such gem is, the kickstarter funded project: Doctor…
  • Favorite Quotes from the Ninth Doctor’s era

    whoviantheology
    2 Jul 2014 | 8:10 pm
Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor only appeared for one season, and while some of the special effects and story lines during his tenure were not the best, (though every season has it’s hits and misses) the 9th Doctor was a fascinating character and I believe a the ninth doctor was the perfect way to introduce the show to a new generation. So in honor of his era, here are my top favorite quotes from the first season of NUWho. 5. Episode: World War Three We live in an increasingly diverse and complicated world, whose problems are massive and often global in scope. Technology and societal norms…
  • Day of the Doctor Part 2: We’ve Got Enough Warriors

    15 Jun 2014 | 2:32 pm
The three Doctors are posed ready to detonate the moment and destroy both the Daleks and the Time Lords, including 2.47 billion children. Hands pressed on the weapon’s button, the Doctor gives a stirring speech: DOCTOR 10: What we do today is not out of fear or hatred. It is done because there is no other way. DOCTOR: And it is done in the name of the many live we are failing to save. Yet before they could press the button, the Eleventh Doctor looks back at Clara, who shakes her head while lightly crying. DOCTOR: What? What is it? What? CLARA: Nothing. DOCTOR: No, it’s something. Tell…
  • 1. The Day of the Doctor: These are the people you’re going to burn?

    whoviantheology
    31 May 2014 | 8:47 pm
I’m sure it doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone that The Day of the Doctor is my favorite episode from the Matt Smith era. Frankly, this episode is my favorite episode of Nuwho thus far. For me, The Day of the Doctor typifies the very best of Doctor: it has genuinely funny bits, it has a weird looking alien that I’m sure children will try to imitate and because it is the 50th anniversary special it has a bunch of little Easter eggs that hark back to the earlier era of Doctor Who. It is no wonder that this episode has been described as “a love letter to fans.” However, the episode…

  • State of the Blog: New template and reader engagement

    Dan
    31 Jul 2014 | 3:00 am
I didn't get much feedback about DMD's new look from people here. This seems to be part of an ongoing change in visitor habits, as Twitter seems to be the preferred choice. Are comment areas doomed because they feel so isolated from the wider world? It's starting to feel that way, which is a pity. You can get into fun, in-depth, ongoing discussions in a well-moderated comments area, but obviously it needs someone to start the ball rolling.Anyway, does everyone like the new template? Don't all shout at once. I think it's much nicer to look at and easier to use, but not such an enormous change…
  • TWIN PEAKS - is it time to resume television's weirdest mystery?

    Dan

Oh God, I've just taken a photo of a mass-produced inanimate object! #TwinPeaks pic.twitter.com/wceBGMqBxO— Dan Owen (@danowen79) July 30, 2014Longtime readers will know that I reviewed the first season of TWIN PEAKS five years ago, but didn't continue into the second. Is now the perfect time to resume those reviews? I've just purchased the gorgeous 'Entire Mystery' Blu-ray box-set, and feel drawn back into Mark Frost and David Lynch's mysterious world. Would anyone like to read a run of archival season 1 reviews (republished with amendments and HD vidcaps), leading into new series 2…
  • From AMERICAN HORROR STORY to FARGO, will U.S cable's sudden love of 'anthology series' last?

    Dan
    30 Jul 2014 | 2:30 am
There's an emerging trend in U.S TV for cable dramas to have seasons that deviate from the preceding one, becoming anthologies. FX's American Horror Story started the ball rolling, when creator Ryan Murphy announced its second year wouldn't continue the 'haunted house' plot of its inaugural run. Instead, AHS told a completely different story set in a crazy asylum, utilising some of the same actors.HBO's True Detective went one further. It told a finite story over just 8 episodes, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and those actors won't even return as different characters next…
  • Trailers: THE HOBBIT – THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES & SIN CITY – A DAME TO KILL FOR

    Dan
    29 Jul 2014 | 3:30 am
This Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy hasn't achieved the same highs as its predecessor, but it's technically superior and I actually prefer Martin Freeman to Elijah Wood. The Hobbit trilogy has been dogged by complains each instalment's too long (which is hard to argue against), and the love/hate high-frame rate (HFR) medium overshadowed the first film's content somewhat, but I think people are being too hard on these movies. They're astonishingly rich productions and I find myself luxuriating in the pure escapism of them in my cinema seat, with 3D glasses perched on my nose. I probably…
  • TRUE BLOOD, 7.6 – 'Karma' - in sickness and in health

    29 Jul 2014 | 2:30 am
JASON: Bill Compton is one tough motherfucker. He's gonna beat this thing. I mean, hell, he was like a bonafide vampire God about six months ago! After five disheartening episodes, True Blood makes headway with the sixth, "Karma". Suddenly the thrust of the story is squarely on the shoulders of two main characters, terminally ill vampires Bill (Stephen Moyer) and Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), as they both concentrate on tying up loose ends before dying the 'true death'. Eric intends to avenge the death of his sister by murdering Sarah Newlin (Anna Camp), while Bill wants to make sensible…
