Seems like there isn’t a day that goes by that Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch, isn’t linked to some upcoming role on the big screen. Most play out over time such as Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit, Tinker Tailor, etc. Others seem to endlessly remain a rumor (insert upcoming new JJ Abrams’ Star Wars mega-blockbuster here). Most recently, Cumberbatch has been rumored to be in line to play James Bond creator, Ian Fleming. According to Hollywood’s The Tracking Board, the as-yet-to-be-named film will detail the origin stories of James Bond. Based on Andrew…

  • This is actually the best reality TV supercut ever

    Andy Dehnart
    23 Apr 2014 | 9:42 am
VH1 has gathered what it says are The 5 Greatest Fan-Made Reality TV Supercuts. It's hard to argue with 2008's comprehensive "I'm Not Here to Make Friends," and Michael Kors' critiques make me miss him even more. But first came something even more magical from the now-defunct TVgasm (Real World producers bought it, ruined it, and then shut it down, similar to what happened recently with NBCUniversal's Television Without Pity). This supercut arrived three years before "I'm Not Here to Make Friends." Yes, I'm talking about Julie Chen and "but first," which highlighted and brought attention to…

    22 Apr 2014 | 6:41 am
The Voice's first season-six live show suffered from a major technical problem during a top 12 contestant's performance. About 20 seconds of Kristen Merlin's performance of "Stay," below, was inaudible because her microphone failed. She removed the monitor in her ear, thinking that was the problem, but she kept singing anyway, finishing the song with its final word as someone handed her a working mic. Kristen previously had both her battle round performances condensed into brief recaps, so cue the conspiracy theories. Kristen was praised by the coaches, particularly by Adam, for her…

Survivor challenges that test the contestants' memory, such as Wednesday immunity challenge, were unlikely to return to the show for some time--at least until Jeff Probst listened to 17 people on Twitter and changed his mind. Really. This started with Dalton Ross asking Probst in their weekly Q&A about the Dream Team's testing of those challenges. As part of his answer, Probst said,"Personally, I've become less and less fond of memory games. We may take a break from them for a while. (No promises, but that's the gut feeling right now.) Jezebel has created a montage of "the best of the worst cries from" Bravo's The Real Housewives shows: New York, Beverly Hills, Atlanta, New Jersey, D.C., Orange County, and Miami. The result is hilarious footage of sadness--perhaps because, as the headline says, it's "Real Housewives crying through Botox." If you think it's mean, just wait until you hear what song they've set the montage to (hint: it's "Tears of a Clown"). Watch it here. (By the way, there's something super-ironic about a Gawker media property not allowing other sites to embed a video they created.)» comment on this…

They have a very specific vision, and — under the pressure of deadlines and budgets — they’re charged with inspiring an entire crew and cast of actors to carry it out. We’d probably be jerks, too. And on the other side of things, there are the actors — most of whom are sensitive, narcissistic creative types who need a bit of ego-stroking to produce their greatest work. • It’s Not TV: Why an Amazon Deal Could Keep HBO Relevant for the Post-Cable Era

    James Poniewozik
    23 Apr 2014 | 7:11 am
This morning, Amazon and HBO announced what amounts to an alliance in the Great Streaming Wars of 2014: For the first time, an Amazon Prime subscription will give you access to HBO’s archive of series, up to approximately three years ago. That means The Sopranos, Deadwood, and many other TV monuments that were only available through HBO are now included with your free shipping and future access to Jeff Bezos’ drone armada. • REVIEW: In FX’s Fargo, the Devil Goes Up to Minnesota

    James Poniewozik
    14 Apr 2014 | 8:58 am
The best way to begin to describe what Fargo is to start with what it isn’t. The new FX series (premieres April 15) is not a remake of the 1996 Coen brothers movie–though the brothers are executive producers and the Minnesota settings and accents (uffda!) are largely the same. The core story involves a mild-mannered salesman who falls into a life of crime, though it’s not car salesman Jerry Lundegaard but insurance salesman Lester Nygaard (Martin Freeman), and the crime is not the staged kidnapping of his wife but–ah, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The best way to…

  • Black Box TV Review – ABC Takes On Mental Health Drama

    Marc Eastman
    22 Apr 2014 | 5:12 pm
THE BLACK BOX – ABC’s “The Black Box” stars Ditch Davey as Dr. Ian Bickman, Kelly Reilly as Catherine Black and David Ajala as Will Van Renseller. (ABC/Andrew Eccles) Black Box, ABC‘s latest drama, feels a lot like a show created by committee, and constructed largely by piecing together ratings research of plot and character points. A little bit House, a hint of Grey’s Anatomy, and a heaping dose of the hokey, “we’re calling you stupid,” plot construction of Scandal… et voilà. Of course, if those last two are among your favorite…
  • Philomena Blu-Ray Review

Philomena is as surprising in its existence as it is in its ability to transform a story that ought to be cliche syrup into something real and moving. The film’s ability to deliver honest emotion may be more surprising, given the synopsis, but the existence question may need some explanation. Steve Coogan, of Alan Partridge and other comedic efforts fame, isn’t a name you immediately associate with not only starring in a venture like this, but also co-writing it and becoming something of a driving force behind the production. Moreover, it’s rare to get anyone behind a film…

    12 Apr 2014 | 10:07 pm
FX continues its effort to take over the world by putting out shows that, even if you hate them, are at least trying to do something amazing, with Fargo. Based on the work of, and produced by, Joel and Ethan Coen, the 10-episode series is only connected to the original film in the loosest possible sense. It takes place in Minnesota, police investigate foul deeds, and some really weird shit happens. There isn’t really a central character to the thing, though Martin Freeman‘s Lester Nygaard and Billy Bob Thornton‘s Lorne Malvo come closest to filling the role. Instead,…

    Penn Collins
    22 Apr 2014 | 11:02 am
If a reboot isn’t gritty, is it really even a reboot? Unwilling to even tempt the premise of that question, the producers of the new Fantastic Four starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell will just go ahead and make it gritty. More specifically, the writer, Simon Kinberg (such a writer name, by the way) said the film will be “a more realistic, a more gritty, grounded” version of the story. So it’s going to be a more realistic telling of a story that involves a man made out of rock and a woman that stretches. But don’t worry if you…

And he’s s reportedly talking to Leonardo DiCaprio as a star. This leads me to believe, after the last Jobs film with Ashton Kutcher, that the public is being far too kind in regards Steve Jobs looks than they ever were before his death. David Fincher‘s now-defunct Jobs film would have starred Christian Bale. I guess we’ll have to wait until 2015 for a Zac Efron…

Whereas the Singles soundtrack, while countercultural at the time, would go on to serve as a seminal album to those who grew up to graduate to become upstanding adults, The Crow soundtrack served as a rallying point for those kids who felt it would be their mission in life to blow up Starbucks and get their lips pierced. Of course, none of that really happened, and everyone from all walks of life would wind up enjoying Starbucks following its proliferation, but it does speak to The Crow’s place in recent history. Whereas grunge had gone from becoming a subculture to THE culture, The…

  • Cumberbatch. Benedict Cumberbatch.

    Bill Young
    22 Apr 2014 | 10:03 pm

For those that have been off the grid since Spooks (MI5 in America) came to an end there is light at the end of the tunnel. Filming has begun on Spooks: The Greater Good, the feature film which picks up where the TV series left off. You might remember that Sir Harry had decided to leave Thames House for the quiet life with Ruth until a knife came between her and Harry. Well, Sir Harry returns to the Grid no longer interested in the thought of a ‘normal life’ without Ruth. The good news for fans of the brilliant bit of television that was Spooks is that, just like the original 10…

  • Take a tour of the British Isles in accents

    Bill Young
    18 Apr 2014 | 10:03 pm
From a drama standpoint, have you ever wondered as you were watching the likes of MI-5, Doc Martin, Scott & Bailey, New Tricks, Case Histories, Call the Midwife, Father Brown or Eastenders how where the show is set will dictate the accents used in the show? How about from a comedy standpoint with Last of the Summer Wine, Only Fools and Horses, Open All Hours or even Moone Boy? In the States, it’s usually pretty simple to distinguish a Texas accent from a Southern one or an upper Midwest accent and be able to immediately know where a show is set. This particularly came to mind…

  • The Veronica Mars movie was basically perfect

This review contains spoilers. If you haven’t watched the movie, don’t read. There’s a moment during the Veronica Mars movie when Veronica and Logan are driving across a bridge (pictured above) where I was sitting in the theater and just thought wow, this is a movie. The exterior shots of Southern California, Veronica’s smooth voiceover, the tracking shot of her riding shotgun. It has been close to seven years since the show was retired from television airwaves, and here it was on the big screen. Veronica Mars was 20 feet tall, right in front of me. So rare is the…

If you’re looking to satisfy your itch to see cars go vroom a lot on the big screen, then by all means run — don’t walk — to Need for Speed this weekend. The packed house I watched it in was having a mighty good time with the races, the crazy stunts, and the cheeky one-liners, as was I. But if you’re thinking Need for Speed elevates beyond that, then you might be let down. Which I was, especially since Aaron Paul’s latest project was the critically acclaimed Breaking Bad. Not that every film or television role he does thereafter has to be the next Breaking…

A decade long journey comes to a head as Chastity Bites is finally released on DVD, and to celebrate the spectacularly spooky news, we have an in-depth look into the mind of the writer and producer of the film, Lotti Pharriss Knowles. This recently released horror-comedy puts a modern day spin on the historical tale surrounding Elizabeth Bathory, a devilish woman who bathed in the blood of virgins, believing that her murderous ways would help achieve eternal youth. How’s that pipe dream going for ya, Lizzy? Not so great, I would imagine. To the people who said that dedication is dead, you…

  • Splitsider Reviews Trey Parker's 1996 Unproduced Screenplay 'Fuzzies'

    4 Apr 2014 | 12:01 pm
Via Splitsider: "The Script Pile" is a biweekly column on Splitsider that takes a look at the screenplays for high-profile movie and TV comedies that never made it to the screen. In 1996, a year ahead of Comedy Central picking up South Park, the show’s co-creator Trey Parker sold his first movie. Called Fuzzies, the script was written by a 24-year-old Parker, and it’s a hard-to-classify feature, different than anything Parker and partner-in-crime Matt Stone have made in the nearly two decades since. Fuzzies is a live-action movie about a mentally disabled 9-year-old boy defending…

"All of these arguments read into the scenes without examining their context, and seem to be desperately seeking ways to defend Jaime's honor. They touch only the surface of the scene, without examining why people believe the scenes are so different, and why they’re reacting so passionately to the entire idea. Most of the above criticism is in response to an overwhelming discomfort at the “changed” scene, and is coming from readers who, in reading the book, did not recognize it as a sexual encounter that involved blatant disregard for Cersei’s lack of consent. So to have it presented…

  • WGN’s “Salem”: Witchy is the New Black

    Diana Price

Witches are all the rage on TV, with “The Witches of East End” on Lifetime and FX’s big hit, “American Horror Story: Coven.” And now WGN is getting into the original series game with their own twist on those magical women of lore with “Salem.” But this version is a bit different than what we’ve seen so far with the modern day soap operas of those predecessors. Campy vs. Creepy “The Witches of East End” plays out in a modern day setting, and “Coven” bounces between two different time periods, but is set primarily in the…

    Treva Bowdoin
    22 Apr 2014 | 12:55 pm
The “Fargo” TV series on FX might be based on the 1996 Coen brothers’ movie, but its premiere felt as new as the pure white snow covering up the dead body with the blue nose in the teasers (insert obligatory “You betcha!” joke here). Yes, the series definitely paid homage to its predecessor, but Billy Bob Thornton’s character was a revelation. He was obviously filling in for Peter Stormare’s killer character from the movie, but Thornton’s Lorne Malvo has a lot more to say. Luckily, most of it is either funny or fascinating. The hitman thrives on…

If you think you know what to expect from the new FX series “Fargo,” think again. Not only does it create a whole new story and cast of characters set in the famous Minnesota town, but it breaks the conventions of what you’re used to seeing on a TV series, according to Martin Freeman, who plays Lester Nygaard on the series. Which is one of the reasons the star of “The Hobbit” and “Sherlock” wanted to get on board with the 10 episode limited-run series, despite a few concerns prior to committing to the project. “I knew I did not want to be in a…

I have to give The Following some amount of credit for this one. The TV Licence. We, Her Majesty's subjects in the UK all have to pay it if we want to watch live TV, whether we like it or not.  The TV Licence goes towards paying for the BBC’s UK services - all of the TV channels, radio stations and online services like BBC iPlayer and BBC Red Button. In 2011, the BBC broke down the costs for the licence fee money for 2010-2011 and worked out that for every £12.13 monthly payment,…

  • Poker in TV Crime dramas

    22 Apr 2014 | 1:12 am
WHEN is it appropriate to reference a high-stakes poker game in a TV series? When the stakes are high, of course. While there are certainly alternative effective methods to employ when trying to convey a serious sense of having it all on the line, none bring to the felt a more sexy and glamorous lifestyle inherent to the subject matter than poker. Frame by frame, draw by draw, and flop by flop, each part of a high stakes poker scene keeps the audience engaged in the goings-on and potentially up to speed with character interactions that are more complex than meets the eye in traditionally…

The most die-hard Star Wars fans know that if you’re truly a hardcore enthusiast of the saga that Lucas built, then you can expand your knowledge of the mythology beyond the films.  The lucrative franchise has spawned a highly-successful series of novels, comic books, and even television shows that fill in the gaps left by the absence of more movies.  As such, with the announcement of a new series of Star Wars films, many have speculated over story details by drawing on major plots from the books.  But, if you ask screenwriter Simon Kinberg, he’ll tell you a different…

  • Martin Freeman: “Fargo” May Not Be What You’re Expecting

    Diana Price
    18 Apr 2014 | 9:05 am
If you think you know what to expect from the new FX series “Fargo,” think again. Not only does it create a whole new story and cast of characters set in the famous Minnesota town, but it breaks the conventions of what you’re used to seeing on a TV series, according to Martin Freeman, who plays Lester Nygaard on the series. Which is one of the reasons the star of “The Hobbit” and “Sherlock” wanted to get on board with the 10 episode limited-run series, despite a few concerns prior to committing to the project. “I knew I did not want to be in a…

“Fionaaaaaa!” If there’s one thing I’ve discovered during this (probably the best) season of Shameless yet, one of the most significant running themes is that opportunities are fleeting for the Gallagher’s family and connections.  So many of these characters scramble to keep their grip on the little pieces of hope or stability that they find, and they either get fried or completely destroy themselves.  The problem is that constant sensation that everything has been falling apart, which has left me with some sinking feelings all season long.  Here are my…
  • Why Do Women Love Toxic Gay TV Relationships?

    Kat
    4 Apr 2014 | 8:16 am
I notice a pattern here There’s something about the way women swoon over gay relationships on television.  Shameless has drawn a great deal of romantic attention for Mickey and Ian’s tumultuous affair.  Whole Tumblrs are devoted to their moments together.  I cannot help but wonder why I, and so many other women, are drawn to what is objectively a damaged and abusive love-affair constructed from internalized homophobia and slowly loosening repression.  I have to wonder if observance of tortured gay relationships provides a means of satisfying a deeper desire for male…

I only knew he was sitting my psyche waiting for a piece of history to bring him out of the darkness.  My boyfriend shared the beauty because he thought it was funny.  Little did he know that I would fall in love today. SURPRISE Army of Lovers was a Euro-pop band from the late 80s and 90s that produced beauty and dance too stunning to make it further than Beavis and Butthead here in the states.  At least, that’s all I can recall. …

puᴉɯ ɹnoʎ ǝǝɹɟ Cut Copy’s Free Your Mind is less of an album and more of an auditory sermon.  Some might think the overall uplifting message of the album is only mildly distinguishable from 70s drug odes inviting the withered masses to come get “higher.”  Their work reads, to me, more like a nondenominational religious journey.  Their shows feel like it, too.  This weekend, at Terminal 5, I joined the cult of Cut Copy. I’ve loved Cut Copy since 2011, discovering Zonoscope accidentally while listening to a Friendly Fires station on Pandora.  Seeing as…

Not quite the 90s, but close enough. Via RuthlessReviews Up until about a day ago, Normcore was only a whisper in the dark.  Sometime in October, a group of art people made some kind of mention of Normcore being the accessible appeal of the generic smiley face.  Now, NYMag has decided to call this non-thing a thing, the internet’s eating it up like cat-picture pudding, and I smell bull dookie.  I don’t think normcore is a thing, and here’s why. • They Came Together Sundance London Movie Review

    22 Apr 2014 | 6:54 am
David Wain, perhaps best known as the director of films like Role Models and Wanderlust returns to a style of genre comedy that made Wet Hot American Summer a huge cult hit over the last few years, but instead of the 70s teen movie They Came Together eyes up the romantic comedy genre, and absolutely decimates every cliché and beat to all of those soft, easy films that Meg Ryan then Jennifer Aniston then Katherine Heigl made their money off of. Joel and Molly, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, are at dinner with friends Ellie Kemper and Bill Hader, when they begin to tell the story of how they…

David (Matt Walsh) is a blue collar worker who spends his free time collecting evidence of potholes and general bad upkeep of his town of Liberty so that he can make his case in weekly town hall meetings, only to be cut off after 3 minutes each week.

The Best Air Dates And Movie Release Dates Tracking Site! Welcome to Air Dates! I’m a huge fan of the 7th art. I spend most of my time watching tv shows and movies, but not just for fun. I believe filming has a philosophy that can impact human mind as well as other arts or social sciences. I approach all movies on this basis. Every director has a philosophy or bases his filming experience on a story that leads us to think every aspect of it emotionally and rationally. Cinema is an art where imagination gets involved, maybe even more valuable than the other arts in our contemporary…

  • Game of Thrones: Controversial rape scene sparks fierce fan reaction

    Harriet Matthews
    22 Apr 2014 | 3:17 pm
A massive internet based furore has arisen in the last few days regarding a certain scene in the latest episode of Game of Thrones (read our review here). The scene takes place between twins and lovers Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei (Lena Headey). Relations between the pair have been strained at best since Jaime’s return; following the death of Joffrey the pot boils over, and Jaime appears to force himself on Cersei. What’s provoking is that in the Game of Thrones books this act is not forced, but consensual, and there seems to have been absolutely no reason for the show’s…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 3 – Breaker of Chains

    Harriet Matthews
    21 Apr 2014 | 3:23 am
In the aftermath of Joffrey’s death, most characters are attempting some nifty footwork to either hold, gain, or regain their ground. Most are trying to work out how best to protect themselves and those they care about, while in foreign parts Daenerys steps her anti-slavery campaign up another notch as she arrives at Meereen. Last week we were starting to wonder what had happened to Littlefinger. Well he’s back from his cruise, and not a moment too soon; if the showrunners had left him out of proceedings for much longer we might have started to forget he existed. This episode…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 2 – The Lion and the Rose

    Harriet Matthews
    14 Apr 2014 | 12:52 pm
Another day in Westeros, another wedding to attend. Hotly anticipated by readers of the books, the Purple Wedding is the first truly major event of season four, and as such author George R. R. Martin was drafted in by showrunners D B. Weiss and David Benioff to help with scripting the episode (Martin has previously put on his screenwriting hat for The Pointy End in season one, Blackwater in season two, and The Bear and the Maiden Fair in season three). In the past, Martin’s involvement has tended to come much later in the season, so the fact that he’s pitched in on episode two…
  • My Mad Fat Diary Season 2: Episode 6

    Kirsty Everiss
    9 Apr 2014 | 3:02 am
We are nearing the end of season 2 of My Mad Fat Diary. Episode 6 is the penultimate episode, and really a look back at events from seasons 1 and 2 seen through the eyes of Chloe. Rae is involved in the show for the Performing Arts course, and Chloe was the lead singer in her group but she hasn’t been coming to rehearsals. Rae decides to go to Chloe’s house and finds out from Chloe’s parents that she has gone missing. Her parents don’t seem concerned, as Chloe seems to do disappearing acts all the time. Rae says she needs the posters Chloe has for the show, and then looks for…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 1 – Two Swords

    Harriet Matthews
    7 Apr 2014 | 2:10 pm
Oh yes, it’s that time of year again. Spring flowers are in full bloom, April showers are sprinkling onto our waiting umbrellas, it’s almost time for the Easter Bunny to leave some chocolate fertility symbols hidden in the bird bath, and Game of Thrones is back. Your Mondays are no longer yours; now, they belong to the realm. A lot of stuff went down in season three; so much in fact, that you may be wondering if there are enough characters left alive to warrant you sticking with this careering warhorse of a show until the bitter and bloody end. The Starks, or at least most of them, may be…
