NEW YORK (AP) — America has rejected the idea of cappuccino-flavored Lay's potato chips.Frito-Lay says "Wasabi Ginger" won its contest that gives people a chance to create a new flavor, beating out the coffee-flavored chips and the two other finalists — "Mango Salsa" and "Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese." Parent company PepsiCo Inc. says about 1 million total votes were cast online for the "Do Us A Flavor" promotion, a sales driver it has launched in more than a dozen countries.More...

  • Manhattan, the TV Season’s Secret Weapon

    James Poniewozik
    20 Oct 2014 | 5:37 am
I cannot always pretend to understand this new age of television, with its surfeit of TV series from websites and tiny channels and online bookstores. But I am enjoying it. Take Manhattan, the richly textured period drama about scientists trying to create the atomic bomb, in Los Alamos, N.M., during World War II. It comes from WGN America, the cable-broadcast “superstation” that’s trying to rebrand itself with original scripted dramas. (The first, the loopy supernatural serial Salem, debuted earlier this year.) It’s created little pop-culture buzz. (It’s…

I wasn’t going to write about #Gamergate. Most of the video gaming world is outside my experience. I used to play more, when I had more time and hair, but now I only play a few tablet or iPhone games, and badly. (I get a 384 on Threes, it’s basically a national holiday.) Not my issue, I figured. Weeks went on, and I kept seeing references to a culture war between gamers and gaming journalists, especially feminist critics of the industry, that had devolved into vile sexist harassment and death and rape threats. So I started reading, and to an outsider anyway, Gamergate led to a…
  • It’s Not TV. And It’s Not Cable. It’s HBO, Online.

    James Poniewozik
    15 Oct 2014 | 9:04 am
If you’ve been considering cutting the cord to your cable-TV subscription, HBO may have just handed you the scissors. At Time Warner’s investor meeting Wednesday, CEO Richard Plepler announced that beginning in 2015, HBO will offer a standalone online service, allowing broadband customers without cable TV to subscribe. This move has been speculated–and by some cordcutters, fantasized–about for years. But the thinking was that it was some time off, if ever, because HBO had more to lose by ticking off cable providers than it had to gain from broadband content delivery.
  • Why The Walking Dead Is So Brutal — and So Popular

    14 Oct 2014 | 7:00 am
This article contains spoilers. Click here to reveal them. They just keep coming, more and more, as if rising from the very earth. Not zombies–Walking Dead viewers. The season premiere of the, um, staggeringly popular horror drama set a new viewing record, once again: 17.3 million viewers, before we even count up DVR recordings and encores (which brought its viewership up to 28 million last season). 2.5 million more adults under 50 watched it than Sunday-night football. It may end the week the most-watched series on TV, period. In other words: what is arguably TV’s most…

    James Poniewozik
    13 Oct 2014 | 11:21 am
Brief spoilers for Sunday’s The Good Wife follow: The Good Wife began its run, just over five years ago, as a political legal drama that dealt heavily with the “Wife” half of its title: would Alicia Florrick stand by her ambitious politician husband, about to mount a return run for state’s attorney, after he’d been disgraced in a sex scandal? The show has covered a lot of ground since then, but with “Oppo Research,” the best episode yet of the young new season, it’s come around to being a different kind of political drama, concerned with whether…

  • Ooyala Buying Videoplaza To Enhance Video Advertising Breadth

They are two of the best-known names in online video service provision – and now they are coming together as one. Video streaming service Ooyala, itself now owned by Australian telco Telstra, is acquiring its video advertising peer Videoplaza. The buying company says the deal “allows Ooyala to tap into the fast-growing video ad market”, “the first step in a multi-step strategy aimed at establishing global leadership in personalized cloud TV and video”. For Stockholm-based Videoplaza, it is an opportunity to improve its US footprint. Speaking at IBC Show in…

Videology has established a strong profile for itself by helping TV ad buyers make intelligent decisions to buy online video ads. Now it wants to help them buy good old fashioned TV ads in the same way. The New York-based company is opening a dedicated TV practice. As CEO Scott Ferber tells The Wall Street Journal, the idea isn’t to devalue the pool of premium TV advertising by opening a digital-style exchange. Rather, Videology will bring its targeting and planning suite to bear to help advertisers better identify audiences. Back in May, Videology‘s head of global TV strategies,…
  • Interstitial Better Than Auto-Play: Jun CEO Mulls New Mobile Ads

CHICAGO – Ad network Jun Group’s CEO Mitchell Reichgut “recoils” when he hears about auto-playing ads, the new format being picked by Facebook and others to deliver video messages. But that doesn’t mean he won’t try introducing interruptive ads of his own. “(Auto-play) smacks of things that less than ingenuous,” Reichgut tells Beet.TV in this video interview. “In an interstitial, an interruptive unit, in an app environment, you’re going from one page to another and there’s a commercial break. “We’re considering that…

Historically, videos which start automatically on Web pages and in mobile apps can be offensive to users, but the approach taken by Facebook by setting videos to autoplay without sound, is an important step forward for publishers and marketers, says Vivek Shah, chairman of the IAB and CEO of Ziff Davis, in this interview with Beet.TV Since setting videos to autoplay earlier this year, Facebook has seen doubling of video views between May and July, the company reported.   In the same report, it said that about 65% of the video views are on mobile.   Earlier this month, Beet.TV reported…

My delay in writing this came first from a hectic flight back into the country on the night the show aired and with me struggling to find a way to write a review now that I missed the instant "quick review" format that I've been utilizing all season. • Marry Me Review – TV NBC

    Marc Eastman
    17 Oct 2014 | 8:08 am
Casey Wilson and Ken Marino are perfectly matched, niche comedians, and NBC‘s latest effort, Marry Me, looks to be a vehicle perfectly constructed for them. Of course, that still leaves open the question of whether or not people are going to jump on board. Brought to you by one of the writers of Happy Endings, and obviously with one of its stars, the show has a connection to the comedic stylings of that show, but clearly pulls from the “cornier” comedic abilities of Wilson and Marino. Also like Happy Endings, the show’s only chance at survival is to run as far and as…

American Horror Story Freak Show Review American Horror Story, like a number of other shows in recent years, is at this point more involved in a certain gamification of television content production than anything that is especially similar to story construction. While the usual course is that shows either kick off with this sort of theory in mind, or slowly succumb to the allure of an easy ratings/effort ratio, AHS, because of its “season” format, gives us both. The first season, while solidly in the campy horror genre, laid out some interesting characters who were set on the…

  • For Some Reason, ’22 Jump Street’ Returning To Theaters Just A Few Days Before Its DVD Release

    Penn Collins
    20 Oct 2014 | 6:58 pm
Now, normally, starting a headline or any other statement with “for some reason,” is a pretty shitty crutch to use as a writer, as it’s the job of a reporter to figure out the reason. However, reports from major outlets, including this Deadline piece which interviews the studio, still can’t figure it out. To back up a second… 22 Jump Street is coming to DVD, Blu-Ray and all that other jazz on October 28th. The film did very well, and a re-release wouldn’t be unheard of, but normally it wouldn’t come at a time that it’s in direct competition with…

While fans of a cinematic Batman are no stranger to effeminate Robins *cough*CHRIS O’DONNELL*cough*, it should come as little shock to anyone that the producers behind DC’s Batman V. Superman are looking to the fairer sex for their Robin. More specifically, the producers are looking to Jena Malone (The Hunger Games) to play the Boy Wonder. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, she’s the tough-as-nails tribute who gets naked in the elevator. While Malone is a girl, she doesn’t much resemble the impish pixie archetype that we’ve come to associate with Robin,…

It doesn’t matter, because the guy who wrote those movies is writing the script for a My Little Pony animated feature, and people will see that no matter WHAT you think of those other films. The film will hit theaters in 2017. Of course, it’s very well-known that a while back, My Little Pony started being associated with the weird men who, for one reason or another, decided that they were the target demographic of the pretty, pretty dolls, and that there is totally nothing weird about that. Mulaney was lauded by many to be the lone beacon of hope and humor aid the annual parade of network sitcom crap. Comedian John Mulaney has a rabid and deserved following, and the cast (Nasim Pedrad, Elliot Gould, Martin Short) was an A-team of talent. HOWEVER…it’s been three episodes, and (speaking as HUGE fan of John Mulaney) the show is terrible (We said so here.). And while fans hold out hope, the general public isn’t so patient and generally has its mind made up a month into a show’s run. Since these horrible episodes have gotten horrible ratings, Fox, which had…

They will star in, produce, and co-write a film called Keanu that will follow the theft of a cat by the same name. Keanu Reeves will have nothing to do with this film, but likely serves as the inspiration for the cat’s name. • Downton Abbey Series 5 Episode 5 Review

    Caroline Preece
    20 Oct 2014 | 5:38 pm
With only a few episodes to play with each year, it really is a wonder how Downton Abbey manages to make its yearly storylines feel so slow and ponderous. It’s possibly because each of those storylines has been brought over from previous series, such as Edith’s baby drama, Tom’s social position and Mary’s indecision about […]

We’ve all seen those birthday cards that let you know the #1 song on the radio, the price of a gallon of milk or loaf of bread or even the average home price from the year you were born. There are also ways to get the front page of the New York Times for the day you were born. But, how many times have you ever wondered not just what the #1 television show was for the year you were born, but rather what was on telly at the exact moment you were born. Well, thanks to the BBC and Radio Times, you can now easily find out.   The BBC has just launched an unbelievably cool searchable…

Returning to the small screen for series 4 in early 2015, Death in Paradise continues to add to and already impressive cast list. Filming has begun with many guest stars already destined for a bit of fun on the crime-ridden island of Saint Marie including Downton Abbey‘s Amy Nuttall, Call the Midwife‘s Leo Staar, Outnumbered‘s Tyger Drew Honey and Broadchurch‘s Will Mellor. Added next to the continually growing cast list were a couple of soap stars, Eastenders‘ Hetti Bywater along with Coronation Street‘s Natalie Gumede. Think that’s it? Not even…

You might remember NBC’s fatal 2003 attempt at adapting the Steven Moffat/Sue Vertue situation comedy, Coupling. I say fatal because even though there were 11 episodes produced (which is still a miniscule number of episodes for an American sitcom), it was cancelled after only 4 episodes with 7 of them having never seen the light of day to this day. 180 degrees in the other direction, however, was NBC’s re-make of Ricky Gervais’ brilliant series, The Office, which ran for 9 seasons largely due to the talents of Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer and Ed…

I’m afraid that one segment in tonight’s Stand Up to Cancer 2014 fundraising marathon to be broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK won’t go very far in satisfying those that are impatiently awaiting the next installment of Sherlock that is headed our way during Christmas 2015, but it is a bit of fun. Mentalist/Illusionist Derren Brown, who should be quite familiar to Sherlock devotees, plays havoc with Martin Freeman’s mind palace as his Sherlock co-star and off-screen partner, Amanda Abbington, looks on, obviously enjoying watching a totally perplexed Freeman. “Martin has…

If David Tennant is the hardest working man in show business, then writer Anthony Horowitz has to be considered the hardest working man in the literary world. Aside from his countless novels written over the years, many will, no doubt, associate Horowitz with his screenwriting telly work on Robin of Sherwood, Agatha Christie’s Poirot and Murder Most Horrid, many of the early episodes of Midsomer Murders, a very well-crafted small-screen mini-series, Collision and, obviously, the creator/writer of Foyle’s War, starring Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks. • Supernatural Rewind: the Winchesters reel in a "Hook Man"

    26 Sep 2014 | 9:40 pm
"Hook Man" (Supernatural S0107) cold opens out of the clichéd (but fun) scary camp fire story that everyone has heard a million times. A dude takes his gal out into the middle of the woods to "neck" (if we're talking super old school parlance) or their car breaks down or some such. Then, one of a few things happens. Either the couple here's on the car radio that a bunch of psychopaths have broken out of the local mental hospital (this might be one of my favorites, and may well have been used in the classic film, Stand By Me). Then, wouldn't you know it, surprise surprise, the couple…

Quick Take: South Park, "Go Fund Yourself" "Washington Redskins totally gets people's attention." – Eric Cartman Review: South Park, "Go Fund Yourself" (S1801) I recall an epic road trip from many moons ago. One of my best pals and I took a five-week sojourn across this great nation, slicing across monstrous miles and trekking along the groaning highway (hat tip to Mr. Jack Kerouac there, in one of my all time favorite phrases of his from On the Road) through the south, stopping wherever whim and friends and family took us along the way, modest tastes (Denny's was our friend in many…

Quick Take: Below Deck, "She'd Better Not Be Saying" "Serving Adriennemakes me want to vomit in her face." – Kat Review: Below Deck, "She'd Better Not Be Saying" With most (okay, most) reality shows, you're always trying to contend with how many situations are contrived and to what extent the producers have manipulated situations to drive the drama or intended narrative. In the case of Adrienne's return, it doesn't matter in the slightest as it's pure ludicrous joy to see her back and causing havoc amongst her old co-workers. After drinking it up with boat guests and friends (and…
  • Scorpion and Gotham: "stay frosty" and the over-written pilot episode

    23 Sep 2014 | 2:33 am
So, like many a TV geek and TV "civilian" alike, I checked out the pilot episodes of CBS' Scorpion and FOX's Gotham tonight. Both exhibit plenty of things to critique – plot holes, questionable casting choices, strange pacing and awkward story development – yet by broadcast television standards I found Scorpion and Gotham watchable enough to want to see more. And I consider that high praise indeed on the basis of what the vast majority of the fall TV lineup typically provides. But what I'm particularly focused on, and even fixated on perhaps, are two words that are shared among…

  • Viewers Should Trade in “New Girl” for “Marry Me”

    Treva Bowdoin
    20 Oct 2014 | 8:15 am
“Marry Me” had its work cut out for it, as it airs at the same time as the hit series “New Girl.” But after one episode, this new NBC show convinced me it’s more of a must-watch Tuesday night TV show. Let’s take a look at why you should be watching “Marry Me” instead of “New Girl.” The Lovely Lady Leads Zooey Deschanel definitely has that adorkable thing down, and I used to love Jess for being a living Disney princess with a ’50s housewife wardrobe. However, the cutesy, Little Goody Two-Shoes act is starting to wear thin. It…

Syfy’s “Z Nation” is the perfect show for those who need a break from the bleak mood and slow pace of “The Walking Dead.” Sometimes the anxiety-inducing AMC series can be tough to watch because you spend every episode waiting to see which beloved character is going to die next. “Z Nation” is much easier to watch because it has a sense of humor about the zombie apocalypse. Sure it’s silly most of the time, but who cares when you get crazy zombie moments like the ones listed below? 1. A Zombie Tornado Obviously “Z Nation” had to make a…

In the news this morning, the incredibly popular HBO channel announced its intention to offer a standalone, web-only service in 2015. While this gets many cable lovers fantasizing about cutting cable TV out of the bill without losing their weekly fix of “Game of Thrones,” there are implications behind this announcement that may end up costing the viewer. As Internet speeds have increased and stabilized, we’ve heard the cry, “A la carte cable!” from more mouths every year. But analysts and economists have held firm that this may not actually be what we all want. One writer for…
  • How All of the Villians of “Gotham” Stack Up

The “Gotham” rogues gallery continues to grow in size with each episode of the show, and a distinctive pattern is starting to emerge. There’s a quickly-apprehended villain of the week, and there are the big baddies who get to stay out on the street. Some of them might not be free to cause chaos for long, but they definitely leave their marks on Gotham. Let’s take a look at how these various villains stack up from the least-threatening to the most-threatening. Catwoman Selina Kyle is more of a victim of the corrupt Gotham system than a villain. Her biggest crimes appear…

  • What Brooklyn Nine-Nine Should Learn From Last Night’s So-So Halloween Episode

    Chris King
    20 Oct 2014 | 1:50 pm
Brooklyn Nine-Nine had one of the best seasons of any show, new or returning, last year and has been pretty solid so far throughout the beginning of its second season. However, last night’s episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Halloween II,” may have been the first clunker the show has had in a while. Don’t get me wrong, there were certainly parts of “Halloween II” that made me laugh and singular scenes that I enjoyed, but overall, the episode was a mess. The mixed results of “Halloween II” should teach Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which is great on a pretty…

    20 Oct 2014 | 1:49 pm
Superheroes and villains may kill each other left and right onscreen, but some pop culture icons are just too violent for some parents, it seems. Toys R Us is in trouble with angry parents after someone figured out that they sell Breaking Bad action figures alongside more traditional fare from kid-friendly programming. Concerned mom Susan Schrivjer has launched a Change.org petition in order to get Toys R Us to take the toys off of their shelves, and it’s already attracted 3,000+ signatures out of the 5,000 it needs to uh, do something, I guess. I’m still not quite clear on what…
  • Nucky Needs to Die in the Boardwalk Empire Series Finale

    Chris King
    20 Oct 2014 | 1:14 pm
After five seasons, the HBO Prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire will end this coming Sunday. While the series has seen a lot of great characters come and go from Michael Pitt’s emotionally damaged Jimmy Darmody to the tragic, war-scarred Richard Harrow, Boardwalk Empire has always been Nucky’s story, even when he has been somewhat of a supporting character in it. The fifth and final season of Boardwalk has even double-downed on the show’s focus on Nucky, exploring his past in flashbacks while also putting him front and center in the present. Now, with only one episode…

Many elements of Game of Thrones season five are being kept under wraps, but given the show’s expansive reach and myriad of shooting locations, set photos are going to leak out. And now today we have a new set of photos that have the internet buzzing about a trio of major characters. That would be Dorne’s Sand Snakes, Oberyn Martell’s three baseborn daughters with the last name “Sand” reflecting their dubious parentage as is traditional of the region. The three have been cast for a while now, and include Keisha Castle-Hughes as Obara Sand, Rosabell Laurenti…

The co-creator of the Fox musical series and FX’s American Horror Story will be launching another show on the network next fall called Scream Queens, which is being described as a “genre-bending comedy-horror anthology series.” Scream Queens, which received a 15-episode order today from Fox, will, like American Horror Story, feature a new setting and a new group of characters every season. The first season of the series will reportedly focus on on a college campus that is rocked by a series of murders.

  • Twin Peaks to return in 2016

    7 Oct 2014 | 7:50 am
It is with this typically off-kilter video that Twin Peaks co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost have spread the news that one of the great landmark TV series will be making a comeback in 2016. US subscription network Showtime is making Twin Peaks 3, with Lynch directing and Frost writing all nine episodes, thereby marking the cult drama's 25th anniversary.Normally, resurrecting old faves is a failure of hope over experience. Hawaii Five-0, Dallas and 90210 were all little more than zombified rehashes, with Battlestar Galactica an exception proving the rule. But with Twin Peaks there is…

It…
  • 7 Craziest Moments on “Z Nation”

    Treva Bowdoin
    16 Oct 2014 | 3:06 pm
Syfy’s “Z Nation” is the perfect show for those who need a break from the bleak mood and slow pace of “The Walking Dead.” Sometimes the anxiety-inducing AMC series can be tough to watch because you spend every episode waiting to see which beloved character is going to die next. “Z Nation” is much easier to watch because it has a sense of humor about the zombie apocalypse. Sure it’s silly most of the time, but who cares when you get crazy zombie moments like the ones listed below? 1. A Zombie Tornado Obviously “Z Nation” had to make a…
  • HBO and Time Warner Make a Bold Move

    Jess Hutton
    15 Oct 2014 | 1:56 pm

    Treva Bowdoin
    15 Oct 2014 | 1:37 pm
The “Gotham” rogues gallery continues to grow in size with each episode of the show, and a distinctive pattern is starting to emerge. There’s a quickly-apprehended villain of the week, and there are the big baddies who get to stay out on the street. Some of them might not be free to cause chaos for long, but they definitely leave their marks on Gotham. Let’s take a look at how these various villains stack up from the least-threatening to the most-threatening. Catwoman Selina Kyle is more of a victim of the corrupt Gotham system than a villain. Her biggest crimes appear…

Although the network hasn’t revealed who will take the place of the famed comedian, several rumors are flying, claiming stars like NeNe Leakes, Kathy Griffith, Tyra Banks, Lisa Lampanelli and Amy Schumer are in the running. Why Leakes Takes the Cake Not only is Leakes outspoken and hilarious, she’s also got a background in fashion. She’s the perfect mix of funny and fashionable, which is just what the series is looking for. Leakes is the woman for the…

While on my way to Rockbar NYC on Friday night for a superweek show, I spotted Dan Harmon’s tousled gray hair on a poster that bore Joel McHale’s name.It advertised a screening of Harmontown the next day at 3:45 that included a Q&A, a small piece of good fortune seeing as the Friday shows had sold out.Though I’m not a listener of Harmontown, having not found time to digest podcasts, I opted to view the film as an opportunity to see more stuff related to Community.I left with the certainty that I would be listening to every episode of Harmontown in the future. • Give it a Rest, Miley Did A Decent Cover of Led Zeppelin

From Stereogum And I feel qualified to say this, because I am a former Led Zeppelin diehard. I’ve shared my opinions on the past on similar concepts, stating officially that I Am Not A Purist and that Older is Only Better Because We Were Younger. I don’t think that certain pieces of art are above being recreated or revised. I am strongly against the purist notion that a cover (even a bad one) ruins the integrity of a good original. I don’t even think that using a good song in a bad context harms the original. Good music, as with any art, stands well on its own, and thrives…

    30 Aug 2014 | 9:55 pm
Was Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears a thief of dance?  (Warning, GIFS) I was watching a DVD given to me by old friends, Joanna and Irv.  It was a DVD collection of all of Tears for Fears’ videos, a thoughtful gift considering how many laughs Irv and I had shared over the dances of the new wave era.  The one that gave us endless chuckles was embedded in “Change,” an addictive but lyrically useless pop song that confused me for years until I realized that it was intentionally valueless. We spent lots of time trying to emulate the martial artistry in Roland’s arms.

Soda performing There are beauty and ugly in the act of reflection.  Looking back on a life lived is a nearly meta-experience.  It’s watching a life happen that used to be yours but isn’t anymore.  You’re the sum of that past you’s experiences and of years and years more.  But as an artist creates over decades, they leave pieces of themselves behind in their work, concrete reflections, pieces of frozen time that can be re-examined both objectively and subjectively.  You start to find common themes and enduring lessons once you connect the dots.  Your history is…

From Lightly Buzzed Greetings from Germany! I have been off the radar for a bit while I consume chocolate and sausage (wink wink). My significant other downloaded some episodes of The Strain, a show I was interested in because of the horror and gore after they subjected the world to the eye-worm advertisement. People freaked out, so I was instantly interested.  I had no knowledge of the show other than the freakish gore part, hoping it might be a more sci-fi style American Horror Story with even creepier body horror.  All this is a big “yay” for me. • All Discovery Shows Removed from Netflix October 5th

    5 Oct 2014 | 4:52 pm
Originally scheduled for September 26th, Netflix has removed all Discovery content from their streaming queue today, October 5th. This includes many shows that we've repeatedly posted about being badly out of order like Mythbusters, Whale Wars, and Dirty Jobs. They're losing TLC’s "Say Yes to the Dress" today as well. While it is part of a business deal with  Discovery moving over to Amazon, we wonder if Netflix' consistently bad uploads of Discovery's shows had anything to do with their decision. We often linked to Amazon's versions of these shows because episodes were…

In addition to the recent addition of HGTV's lineup on October 1st, Netflix has added a sizable portion (get it?) of Food Network and Travel Channel's lineups on October 3rd. Like HGTV, many of them are listed as "Collections" - which simply have a collection of top episodes, not all of the episodes ever aired. I'm personally excited about Chopped finally being added, because as a Hulu Plus subscriber, the show is set to "online only" - so we couldn't watch it on our TV via Amazon Fire TV; now we can via Netflix. Also a quick mention to The Boxcar Children, a personal childhood favorite…

A group of kids discover a way to sneak around their town without detection and begin to have a small vestige of childlike fun, before beginning to take on the mantle of human uprising, gathering the adults and working together to take down the big enemy, in the form of big metal clanking behemoths.

DOCTOR: I knew that eggs are not bombs. I know they don’t usually destroy their nests. Essentially, what I knew was that you would always make the best choice. I had faith that you would always make the right choice. CLARA: Honestly, do you have music playing in your head when you say rubbish like that? DOCTOR: It wasn’t my decision to make. I told you. CLARA: Do you know what? Shut up! I am so sick of listening to you! DOCTOR: Well, I didn’t do it for Courtney. I didn’t know what was going to happen. Do you think I’m lying? God’s omniscience (God as all…

Danny: It’s funny, you only really know what someone thinks of you when you know what lies they’ve told you. I mean you say you’ve seen wonders, you’ve seen amazing things and you kept them secret. From me. So what do you think of me, Clara? Clara had a myriad of reasons for why she kept her travels with the Doctor a secret: mainly because it sounds insane. How do you explain to someone that you occasionally travel through space and time with an alien with two hearts that looks human? How would one even begin that conversation? And even if Danny believed her or Clara voluntarily…

MADAME KARABRAXOS: You gave me this number. My name is Madame Karabraxos. I was once the wealthiest person in the Universe. I need your assistance.  I’m dying, with many, many regrets. But one, perhaps, you may be able to help me with. When I first saw this episode, I was a bit confused by the ending. Why did Madam Karabraxos suddenly have a change of heart? People don’t just wake up one day and say, “oh well I was a horrible person, now I need to right all of my wrongs.” Something dramatic must have happened to change her. However, on second viewing, I realized something…
  • Listen: Fear Makes Companions of Us All

Fear serves an important evolutionary purpose: namely survival. Fear enables us to mentally and physically discern threats and dangers and our body automatically begins acting in ways that will hopefully increase our chances of survival. As the Doctor explains to Rupert while they are confronted by what may be a monster, hiding under his bed sheet, fear can be good: DOCTOR: Are you scared? The thing on the bed, whatever it is, look at it. Does it scare you? RUPERT: Yes. DOCTOR: Well, that’s good. Want to know why that’s good? RUPERT: Why? DOCTOR: Let me tell you about scared. Your…

Over at Digital Spy today, you can read my article about some of television's greatest stories of revival. I look at why each show was axed, what happened while it was off-air, how long each show was gone for, and the circumstances of their unlikely returns. (If you have any others to mention, of which there are many, please leave a comment over there!)
  • DOCTOR WHO, 8.9 – 'Flatline' • an unexpected masterpiece

    Dan
    20 Oct 2014 | 3:00 am
After 51 years it's hard for DOCTOR WHO to come up with fresh ways to deliver an episode. The revival's been active 9 years alone, and there are plenty of occasions when an episode feels like an amalgam of recent hits. "Flatline" impressed me because it was a fundamentally typical hour (with a vague similarity to the atrocious "Fear Her"), but a handful of creative differences helped set it apart from every other episode. Here, The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara (Jenna Coleman) touched down in, um, Bristol, to find that something has leeched the exterior dimensions of the TARDIS, resulting…

I've reconsidered my star rating system. It's been a four-star system for a good six years or so, but I used half-star increments. So, technically it was a ten-star system? Hmm.It's worked well for DMD for a long time, but a natural downside of only reviewing things you love, like, or find interesting, is that it's rare for something to ever get less than two-stars. And I'm a tough enough critic that achieving the maximum four-stars is a rarity. So, technically, it's always been a six-star system? Hmm.This is why I have changed things. The star-system is now simplified to just five bolder…
  • THE FLASH, 1.2 – 'Fastest Man Alive' • attack of the clones

    Dan
    16 Oct 2014 | 2:30 am
Like countless second episodes, "Fastest Man Alive" half-existed to reiterate the concept behind THE FLASH, in a manner that wouldn't test the patience of those who saw the pilot. (Which is usually the majority of people watching.) It managed to accomplish that rather well, with dialogue recapping that wasn't always subtle, but felt reasonable. In some ways, the story was also a mini-version of the pilot—with Barry (Grant Gustin) testing the limits of his super-sonic movement before having to fight 'metahuman' Danton Black (Michael Christopher Smith), a one-man clone army.Everything could…

So I just pre-ordered the new Lenovo Yoga 2 recently and I've been using it since 4 weeks this is my review. This laptop is an Entertainment Powerhouse. Its pretty good in the performance since it comes with a 1.6Ghz Intel Core 4th Gen i5 Processor. The main problem with the laptop is that it hangs really often, because of the low reading speed of the SATA Harddrive. The 992$ price tag maybe a bit for people asking for more power and graphic performance, but this laptop has its own perks.Features-Intel Core i5 1.6 Ghz ProcessorBacklit KeyboardIntel hd 4400 Integrated…

  • ‘The Walking Dead’ Live Again

    info@lipulse.com
    14 Oct 2014 | 5:48 am
I’ll give “The Walking Dead” this much, each season it sure knows how to make an entrance. The latest premiere for season five was the most watched single episode in the history of cable television. That is a pretty impressive feat that certainly justifies the early renewal for season six that the show received last week. Unfortunately, I think this may send the wrong signal to the producers, namely that they are doing something right. Basically, I think the show has been falling apart ever since the end of its spectacular first season. The show began with six superb episodes, but then…
  • ‘Arrow’ Returns With a Flash

    9 Oct 2014 | 5:18 am
This week the CW delivers a one-two punch of super-heroics as we get the debut of “The Flash” and the third season premiere of “Arrow.” Late last year Forensics Investigator Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) appeared in two episodes of “Arrow.” At the end of the second episode Allen returned to Central City where he got caught up in an accident with an experimental particle accelerator. The pilot episode of the new series “The Flash” recaps that accident and then dives right into what happens next. Allen wakes up in the home of the accelerator, fabled S.T.A.R. Labs, nine months…
  • Amidst Fall Premieres, Two Finales

    7 Oct 2014 | 5:13 am
It may seem odd during the height of fall premiere season to talk about season finales, but we have a couple of summer holdouts to talk about. One of these has already been renewed, while the other has a far less certain future. Both of them has left viewers clamoring to know what happens next. “Under the Dome” ended its sophomore year with Big Jim Rennie (Dean Norris) going full tilt psycho and Dale Barbara (Mike Vogel) stuck down a hole with the rest of the town of Chester’s Mill. The final two episodes of the season also served as a clearing house of characters and things started…
  • Ratings, What are They Good For?

    info@lipulse.com
    2 Oct 2014 | 5:03 am
Television series live and die by their ratings, but there are very few people who not only understand how ratings work, but also how they are generated. Generally, it works by estimation. That is, a relatively small number of television viewing households agree to have their television viewing habits recorded. Each of those households represent a percentage of the viewing public and from there the number of people viewing a show is calculated the day after to see how many people likely watched a given show. These numbers are further broken down into viewership by age groups. That last part…

As we move into another week of Fall TV Premiere Season some more of my favorites make some pretty dramatic returns. As you’ll see below, not all shows left us hanging off the cliff with their season ending storylines. However, let’s tackle the big one first. I have been very vocal about the season 6 finale of “Castle,” even going so far as to wonder if the show might have jumped the shark so far as to not being able to come back as anything worth watching. While the premiere didn’t exactly restore my faith in the show, nor was it as satisfying as I’d come to expect of the…
