  • Scotland – Should I stay or should I go now?

    17 Sep 2014 | 10:03 pm
In the beginning, England and Scotland were not only separate, they were frequently at war. Ever since that fateful day in 1707 when the two countries got together and formed a single country, Scotland has been part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.  Today’s referendum vote, which has been in the works for almost two and one-half years, offers Scotland the chance to break free from Great Britain and gain its independence. Who better to explain the points to consider on both sides of the issue than the great John Oliver. After all, he all but nailed the debate on the issue of Net…

The intro to each episode of “Extant” tells us that “this is a story about Earth, a story about family, a story about surviving” and that is never truer than it is in the final episode of the first season. In many ways this episode also loops around to the beginning of the show as Molly Woods (Halle Berry) returns from a solo mission to space not alone and her husband, John (Goran Visnjic) attempts to discover just how much humanity their android son, Ethan (Pierce Gagnon) has obtained. The answer to the latter might just determine whether or not mankind becomes extinct. The finale is…

Over that time, we’ve gone from Glee‘s snarky outsiderdom to the sincere likes of The Hunger Games, Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars–and YA has become so culturally dominant that it was one inspiration for critic A.O. Scott to declare the death of adulthood in American culture. Glee packaged stories of…
  • Review: The Mysteries of Laura Has It All. All Wrong.

    James Poniewozik
    15 Sep 2014 | 8:58 am
New York City homicide cop Laura Diamond (Debra Messing) has two jobs, says the advertising for The Mysteries of Laura (Wednesdays on NBC): “Catching bad guys. Raising naughty ones.” She’s separated from her manchild husband (Josh Lucas), which leaves her mostly alone to raise two cartoonishly bratty preschool boys straight out of a Roald Dahl book. She’s a brilliant sleuth and an ace shot, yet struggles to get respect at work, where she shows up driving a car whose seats are littered with Legos and Cheddar Bunnies. This is a murder-of-the-week show, but it is…
  • Review: The Roosevelts Gets Up Close and Personal With History

    James Poniewozik
    12 Sep 2014 | 6:00 am
The subtitle of Ken Burns’ newest PBS megaseries The Roosevelts–“An Intimate History”–is at once obvious and ironic. Documenting the lives of three people–Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt–is an unusually close-focus approach for Burns, who has only rarely done personal biographies. (Frank Lloyd Wright and Mark Twain, for instance–mere bagatelles, at less than four hours.) I’m referring to Tivo’s announcement of a DVR so capacious and expensive, it belongs in the lair of a comic-book billionaire supervillain. White House press secretary Josh Earnest made his first visit to “Shepard Smith Reporting” this afternoon. The 7-minute interview focused on the White House messaging about the mission to take out ISIS in Syria and Iraq and, in Earnest’s words, “the Muslim-led countries who are part of the coalition.” “Like Saudi Arabia’s going to have some boots over there? or Jordan?” Smith asked in jest. “There will be no commitment from those two, on this I will bet every penny I will ever make at this network.” “That’s a substantial…

  • Programmatic Display Is Dress Rehearsal For Video: Trade Desk’s Green

COLOGNE — Static display banners may have been the first ad format to undergo the “programmatic” ad-trading revolution – but the spending there will be dwarfed by video’s adoption of the techniques, says one exec working in the field. “Display is essentially the dress rehearsal. Television and video is where all the money is at,” buy-side programmatic platform The Trade Desk‘s CEO Jeff Green tells Beet.TV in this video interview at DMEXCO. “Display is the best opportunity to touch users with the most frequency to get data … once…

COLOGNE — TV ads may need to be re-cut in half before they are simply shovelled in to mobile apps, says one executive working at the sharp end. “The idea of putting a 30-second TV spot as a pre-roll or a CPV video in mobile is dying,” says app advertising group Supersonic’s European MD James Salins. “What we need … is to educate both media agencies and creative agencies about the virtues of mobile video – which tends to be 10 or 15 seconds. You entertain, inform – and get out.” Supersonic is currently building out its Beijing office after taking a…

My delay in writing this came first from a hectic flight back into the country on the night the show aired and with me struggling to find a way to write a review now that I missed the instant "quick review" format that I've been utilizing all season. Having some time to reflect on the episode, here's my less traditional take on yet another finale of 24: Watching the end to Season 9 of 24, called "Live Another Day," I found myself spacing out right after Audrey Raines bit the bullet thanks to Chinese mercenaries. My mind drifted to a scene far removed from what I was looking at on screen- I…

I have to admit that I’m a fan of ABC Family in general, and there aren’t many of their original shows that have let me down, but their holiday efforts are among my favorite television “events,” and it’s closing in on Halloween again. The 16th Annual 13 Nights of Halloween is starting in a month and a day, and you should make sure you have your calendar marked with all the opportunities. It is slightly repetitive, and a little Tim Burton heavy (if there is such a thing for an event centered around Halloween), but the programming has become a real tradition, and…

We had high hopes for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and for the most part we got what we were after. Listeners may be curious how I found the movie, especially… ape-wise, since I’ve been commenting on the number of apes in the film for months, which led to several emails from fans of the show. The short version is, I was right, there are too many apes. One of the serious drawbacks of the film for me is that there is too little attention paid to the details of the story we’re telling, so long as it serves the purpose of putting forward our offering to the action scenes…

Forever Review ABC‘s new spin on crime drama, Forever, has a bit of sci-fi element to it. As the introductory trailer explains, Dr. Henry Morgan (Ioan Gruffudd) just can’t seem to die. He’s been alive for 200 years now, and the more accurate statement would be that he can’t stay dead. He dies relatively frequently actually, but he always comes back, in water, and naked. He apparently just teleports away, and is back in business. For now, he’s a New York Medical Examiner, and in his free time he searches for a “cure” for his unique situation. As we…

  • Netflix Is Letting You Hide Your Viewing History

    Wookie Johnson
    18 Sep 2014 | 1:13 pm
Let us be judged by our drunken viewings of Dr. Giggles no longer. With the increase of shared accounts, Netflix is now hip to the fact that some of us would like a little privacy. They’ve introduced a new feature that allows subscribers to delete items from their viewing history. This tool should also improve Netflix’s suggestions for viewers without occasional half-watched viewings of A Talking Cat!?! mucking everything up. Head over to the “Viewing Activity” page in your profile and you will be able to delete any item simply by clicking on the X that appears to the right of…

  • Tom Sizemore Is Crowdfunding A Film. Yup. Tom Sizemore Is Asking For Your Money.

    Penn Collins
    18 Sep 2014 | 11:06 am
If you thought giving your money to Zach Braff for a film was a bad idea (it was), then you’re gonna love this. Tom Sizemore, the heavy actor who brought his intensity to Heat, True Romance, and Saving Private Ryan, is hitting IndieGOGO (not sure about the capitalization there) to fund The Honest Thief. A couple things: The movie has “thief” in the name. Don’t sponsor films with “thief” in the name. Tom Sizemore has been arrested for drug possession several times, and domestic abuse. The abuse was against his girlfriend, Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss…
  • Seth Rogen, Adam McKay, And Ben Schwartz Coming Together For A Movie We Know Nothing About

    Penn Collins
    18 Sep 2014 | 10:57 am
Any time you can get Seth Rogen, director Adam McKay, and writer-actor Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation‘s Jean-Ralphio) to come together for a film, the plot details are incidental. OK. That’s not true. There’s always the possibility that it could turn into The Guilt Trip or something like that, but it’s hard not to like the resumes of this trio. Which is why we have to take it on faith that this project will be cool, because we know very little else about it. It’s a script from Schwartz, and it’s go the other two attached. Maybe it’s about…
  • Aubrey Plaza To Voice Her Spirit Animal, Grumpy Cat

    Wookie Johnson
    18 Sep 2014 | 10:01 am
I never expected to say these words but Lifetime is doing everything right with Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. Who better to voice her than Aubrey Plaza? It won’t be much of a stretch for Plaza, who is best known as playing the monotone curmudgeon April Ludgate on Parks and Recreation. Grumpy Cat could very well be April’s spirit animal. In Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever, premiering November 29 at 8/7c on Lifetime, Grumpy Cat stars as a pet store feline who’s never chosen for adoption — which leads to her sour outlook on life. Along comes a 12-year-old girl, who can…

  • Scotland – Should I stay or should I go now?

    Bill Young
    17 Sep 2014 | 10:03 pm
In the beginning, England and Scotland were not only separate, they were frequently at war. Ever since that fateful day in 1707 when the two countries got together and formed a single country, Scotland has been part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.  Today’s referendum vote, which has been in the works for almost two and one-half years, offers Scotland the chance to break free from Great Britain and gain its independence. Who better to explain the points to consider on both sides of the issue than the great John Oliver. After all, he all but nailed the debate on the issue of Net…
  • Your ‘Downton Abbey’ S4 re-cap just in time for Sunday!

    16 Sep 2014 | 10:03 pm
As the UK braces itself for Hurricane Downton that should hit landfall this Sunday, say around 9:00pm, we thought it best that since it has been approximately nine months since most everyone last visited the Crawleys we should do a bit of a recap of where we stand both upstairs and downstairs at Downton Abbey. Yes, Mary is STILL deciding on a suitable suitor, Lady Edith is understandably STILL depressed, Mrs. Hughes and Mr. Carson have FINALLY hooked up, the walls are beginning to close in on Bates and Lady Rose didn’t disappoint by getting tangled up in a scandal surrounding the Prince…

While the world carefully watches the historic “Yes Scotland” vs. “Better Together” vote this coming Thursday that will determine if Scotland is to remain part of the United Kingdom or become an independent country, there is another extraordinarily critical issue on the table that is just around the corner and, most likely, going virtually unnoticed. The 2016 BBC Charter Renewal is inching ever so close with the ultimate outcome quite possibly in the hands of Ian Fletcher (Hugh Bonneville), the BBC’s Head of Values. Fletcher will, once again, solicit the help of…

    Bill Young
    14 Sep 2014 | 10:03 pm
By the end of this week, I’m guessing that most of America will be Roosevelt-ed out having just been riveted to the small screen for 14 hours of brilliant telly from the mind palace of filmmaker, Ken Burns. Not to worry, PBS stations around the U.S. will have three new Miss Marple mysteries headed their way beginning Sunday, September 21. Yes, I’m fully aware that this is Downton Day in the UK but there is plenty of quality drama headed your way to fill the time until January 4, 2015 starting with a bit of Agatha Christie and consulting detective, Miss Jane Marple.   Julia…
  • Downton Abbey 5 – Drama, drama and more drama headed our way

    Bill Young
    14 Sep 2014 | 9:02 am
Lots of questions to be answered one week from tonight in the UK when Planet Earth’s favorite British period drama, Downton Abbey returns to the small screen with the premiere of series 5. Filming has concluded, it’s now Downton Time in the UK. Now that we are inside one week, Chloe Fox from the Telegraph takes us behind the camera as filming winds down at Highclere Castle.   While there is lots of drama on the horizon, it’s not like the first four series have been without their own personal drama. Did Bates (Brendan Coyle) murder his wife? Would Lady Mary Crawley…

  • Red Band Society and The Mysteries of Laura: will dramedies bolster the fall TV season?

    17 Sep 2014 | 12:23 pm
Not so long ago, the dramedy was akin to the third rail of scripted television. In other words, no one wanted to touch it for fear of getting fried. The Sopranos, a groundbreaking show in many ways, proved that you could do very dark material that was leavened with doses of comedy (creator David Chase has even claimed that he always thought of the series as a comedy). And the short lived but much beloved Freaks and Geeks proved that the dramedy could be smashing when placed in expert hands. Showtime in particular kicked off an era where edgy dramedies could be successful within the premium…

  • Why The Ultimate Fighter and Hard Knocks is among the best reality shows on television

    14 Sep 2014 | 6:56 pm
I enjoy sports, but I'm nowhere near the obsessed wizard/junkie level  in which stats can be rattled off at will. Indeed I get bewildered when acronyms like OPS and PER are brought up, and I can easily be out of my depth when chatting sports with a truly invested fan. I particularly enjoy watching pro football, but at the start of every season it takes me a good long while to recall what happened at the end of last season outside of vaguely recalling whether or not my New York Giants made the playoffs (they didn't, and the outlook for that happening anytime in the foreseeable future…

Photo Credit: Bennett Raglin/BET/Getty Images Entertainment We certainly do not want to cause any treble, but Meghan Trainor’s acoustic cover of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” is absolutely amazing! Trainor, whose own catchy tune “All About That Bass” is number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list for the second straight week, provided her own unique twist on the Taylor Swift single by performing a stripped down version during a recent appearance on the Dan and Maz radio show. If you listen closely, you can even hear Trainor singing to Taylor Swift around the…

Listen folks, this is the best news I’ve heard all day, year, decade, you name it.  Since I was a younger lad, my favorite comic book character has and always will be Marvel’s “Merc With A Mouth”, Deadpool.  Yes, I am a huge, huge fan.  Deadpool is unlike any other Marvel character.  He’s obviously quite deadly, with a special aptitude for a wide variety of different weapons, but he’s also kind of an asshole.  He often “breaks the fourth wall” by directly addressing the fact that he’s a comic book character, and his missions are…

A few years ago, Seth Grahame-Smith’s popular revisionist history/horror/action novel Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was made into a film, and while it was enjoyable, it still felt like it was missing something.  Obviously, taking a true and oft-told story and adding a hellish spin to it is outlandish enough, but the film seemed to lack a lot of what made the novel great.  It was shortly there-after that the popular new phenomenon transferred over to classic works of literature, with the most notable tale being a riff on Jane Austen with Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, this…

I think I may be the only person in the United States who really doesn’t like The Leftovers.  The new HBO drama series from Lost creator Damon Lindelof, in my humble opinion, is relentlessly depressing, and I think the characters are loathsome and empty.  The show follows a small New York town, reeling from the disappearance of loved ones who randomly disappeared after a rapture-like event.  There are a couple of bright spots – most notably the great Justin Theroux and the town’s sheriff, and breakout star Margaret Qualley who plays his aloof and detached daughter…

From Stereogum And I feel qualified to say this, because I am a former Led Zeppelin diehard. I’ve shared my opinions on the past on similar concepts, stating officially that I Am Not A Purist and that Older is Only Better Because We Were Younger. I don’t think that certain pieces of art are above being recreated or revised. I am strongly against the purist notion that a cover (even a bad one) ruins the integrity of a good original. I don’t even think that using a good song in a bad context harms the original. Good music, as with any art, stands well on its own, and thrives…

Was Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears a thief of dance?  (Warning, GIFS) I was watching a DVD given to me by old friends, Joanna and Irv.  It was a DVD collection of all of Tears for Fears’ videos, a thoughtful gift considering how many laughs Irv and I had shared over the dances of the new wave era.  The one that gave us endless chuckles was embedded in “Change,” an addictive but lyrically useless pop song that confused me for years until I realized that it was intentionally valueless. We spent lots of time trying to emulate the martial artistry in Roland’s arms.

  • Review: Doctor Who Season 8, Episode 1 – Deep Breath

    Kirsty Everiss
    16 Sep 2014 | 12:15 pm
The wait for the new incarnation of the Doctor was finally over – and, the first episode of this new series was also to have cinema showings. I was able to get tickets to see the episode in the cinema; I was very excited! As much as I liked David Tennant and Matt Smith, I did think the time was right for an older actor to play the role one more, and to have a darker Doctor. This episode was longer than the average 45 minutes, being a feature length of about 76 minutes. At Christmas 2013, Matt Smith had regenerated into Peter Capaldi, and the episode picked up where that Christmas…

    15 Sep 2014 | 1:30 pm
The answers to all the mysteries may finally be revealed in the penultimate episode of season 2 of In the Flesh. Episode 5 focuses on Simon, the PDS sufferer and now love interest to Kieren. We find out his journey as a recovering PDS sufferer. A lot of this episode is told in flashbacks; Simon was at an institute where they were experimenting on the “Rabids” after the Uprising. A Doctor was wanting to find a cure to help the “Rabids”. Simon was one of the “Rabids” experimented on with the new drug. One day Simon responds to the drug being tested and starts to speak. Through…
  • James Corden to crack America

    Dan Green
    11 Sep 2014 | 10:45 am
Any signs of America’s Brit invasion dying off any time soon have been dispelled once more, with James Corden becoming the latest export due to cross the Atlantic after being named as the new host of The Late Late Show. He will replace Craig Ferguson, who recently announced that he will be stepping down in December after a decade of fronting the programme. It comes after David Letterman, the face of that other esteemed CBS chatshow The Late Show, also decided to call it a day. The network themselves were quick to wax lyrical about Corden. Chairman of Entertainment Nina Tassler enthused:…
  • Review: Game of Thrones Season 4, Episode 9 – The Watchers on the Wall

    Harriet Matthews
    4 Dec 0001 | 4:00 pm
Well, we’d be lying if we said this was the direction we thought the showrunners would take for episode nine, the event episode of the fourth season. We certainly weren’t expecting an entire episode completely dedicated to the men of the Night’s Watch. Fervently hoping for one, certainly, but expecting one? We never thought they’d have the cojones. Considering the amount of other interesting stuff going on in Westeros at the moment, the decision was risky, but it’s paid off (big time). Going by sheer spectacle, The Watchers on the Wall is the best episode of Game of Thrones yet. The…
  • Review: In The Flesh Season 2, Episode 1

    Kirsty Everiss
    4 Dec 0001 | 4:00 pm
The first series of In the Flesh appeared on BBC3, and was innovative and different. An infection caused people who had died during a certain time period to come back as the living dead, as an uprising of flesh eating beasts. The uprising was stopped, and the beasts were contained. Known as Partially Deceased Syndrome Sufferers, they were kept in institutions and put on medication to help their condition. Slowly they were returned to their families to live once again in the community. The series was set in a place called Roarton, where the residents don’t like the idea of the Partially…

  • The Stories That We Tell: Robot of Sherwood

    whoviantheology
    14 Sep 2014 | 8:21 pm
As children, the stories we enjoy or create often involve heroes who always end up saving the day. These heroes are unabashedly good. Rarely, if ever do these heroes give us any reason to doubt their motivation or their ultimate success. And while these stories tend to be a bit simplistic in notions of good and evil, they also embody a hope in the world and a hope that eventually everything will work out. It speaks of a hope that there are genuinely good people out there fighting against injustice. As we get older we don’t stop telling stories, but they tend to take on a more realistic…
  • In need of Redemption: Into the Dalek

    whoviantheology
    6 Sep 2014 | 12:20 pm
What is redemption? And can the most evil, vile creatures be redeemed? In the episode, Into the Dalek  the Doctor meets a Dalek (that he later nicknames Rusty) who seems to be repentant and in agony over the actions of his species. “Daleks must be destroyed!” He insists. Of course the Doctor’s interest is piqued. Daleks are ruthless creatures, unable to experience empathy or compassion. They are callous and never waiver in their quest to dominant the universe and destroy all inferior life forms (ie every other life form). So to be confronted by a Dalek who seems to have developed a…

The flesh itself has been combusted… The Doctor angrily dismisses Strax’s questions and begins ranting before Clara calms him down and asks Clara: What is the question? Doctor: A dinosaur is burning in the heart of London. Nothing left but smoke and flames. The question is, have there been any similar murders? Vastra: Yes, yes by the goddess there have. Doctor: Look at them all gawking. Question two: If all the pudding…

CLARA: It’s beautiful. Why did you send me away? DOCTOR: Because if I hadn’t, I’d have buried you a long time ago. CLARA: No, you wouldn’t. I would never have let you get stuck here. DOCTOR: Ha! Everyone gets stuck somewhere eventually, Clara. Everything ends. The sun rises over the bell tower, Clara takes a moment to admire the sunrise and then immediately begins to question the Doctor why he left her. (Though who could blame her). He explains that if he hadn’t he would have had to bury her-another death that he would have to have witnessed in his thousand + years..

Robin Williams was found dead on August 11th, 2014 and initial reports are speculating that it was a suicide.  No, I was not a hardcore Robin Williams fan though I have seen some of his movies. I also am not one to report on celebrity deaths beyond sharing an article or two on my personal facebook page. But when it comes to suicide, I always pause a bit. I’ve been honest with my struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, even though there continues to be a stigma attached to mental illness. (Depression, touted as a treatable disease, is often dismissed as not serious or as a…

written by Steven Moffat | directed by Douglas Mackinnon"Fear makes companions of us all."DOCTOR WHO's often at its best when delivering quiet, disconcerting ghost stories. Steven Moffat delivers one of the best with "Listen"; a weird, conceptual episode that ultimately explores The Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) fear of the dark, sense of isolation (he's introduced sitting Zen-like atop his TARDIS in space), and preoccupation with a pet theory about why people talk to themselves when they're alone. Do creatures exist that forever lurk around us, unseen, evolved to hide? It's another story that fits…

So I just pre-ordered the new Lenovo Yoga 2 recently and I've been using it since 4 weeks this is my review. This laptop is an Entertainment Powerhouse. Its pretty good in the performance since it comes with a 1.6Ghz Intel Core 4th Gen i5 Processor. The main problem with the laptop is that it hangs really often, because of the low reading speed of the SATA Harddrive. The 992$ price tag maybe a bit for people asking for more power and graphic performance, but this laptop has its own perks.Features-Intel Core i5 1.6 Ghz ProcessorBacklit KeyboardIntel hd 4400 Integrated…

The finale is…
  • “Unforgettable” Faces a “DOA”

“Unforgettable” chose to up the stakes in its final hour of season by putting not only one of the team in jeopardy, but by making the potential victim the lead character by poisoning Carrie Wells (Poppy Montgomery). And while Al Burns (Dylan Walsh) raced to find the antidote and culprit in time, we were all left guessing the outcome almost to the end. However satisfying the resolution was the biggest of all still remains unanswered, namely whether or not the show will be returning for another season. It’s hardly surprising that the episode and season didn’t end on a cliffhanger. This…

Over the next couple of weeks there will be some summer series finales to lead us straight into the fall premieres. While I will definitely be noting my favorite finales as well as those shows’ potential returns, it’s time to start looking forward. There will be a plethora of brand new shows vying for our attention and screen time, all hoping to garner enough of an audience to make it until the end of the season and beyond. Networks have long known that word-of-mouth can make or break a show before it even premieres and the importance of the Internet in that process has become more…

Initially housed at Showtime, it would nearly three years before we would find out that CBS would finally be bringing the adaptation to our screens in the summer of 2013. Even then it was being touted as an “event” show, the implication being that it would be a done in one season limited series. The network seemed to realize it had struck gold as just before its…
